With the reveal of the next-generation AbramsX tech demonstrator, I thought I would talk about a much older M1 Abrams testbed. Development of the CATTB or Component Advanced Technology Demonstrator was initiated by TACOM in 1987. The goal was to take all of the advanced tank technology the US Army was experimenting with and put it on one prototype. A standard M1A1 was modified to have a 140mm XM291 cannon, XM91 bustle autoloader, Cummins AIPS diesel engine, and much more.

The CATTB, also known as the 'let's put all the cutting edge tech on one machine and see how fucking broken it would be if put into a videogame' tank. And it was developed before 2000.
the germans created the maus so modern videogames would have issues balancing it

@@AdrianOkay the problems with balancing come from it just being a large slab of armor, it’s not modern it just lacks anything other then armor for the most part so it’s pretty difficult to balance + you don’t get the real life problems to go with it
@@BentCheeks I feel like ATGMs (and other extremely high-pen weapons) should have reduced earnings and score when hitting vehicles that are only at that tier because of their thick all-round armor. I think the person getting hit by the ATGM should get spawn points for getting hit by an extremely high pen weapon.

Funny enough: I used to work at firehouse subs as my first teenage job, and one night we had a guy come in with his friend and order a sandwich with almost everything on it (minus some vegetables). I think it came out to be around $40-50 for the one sandwich, and we had to Saran Wrap it just to keep it to stay together 😂. Cool dude

I feel like the CATTB was basically the Doom Marine of MBTs.
You can hear the "The only thing they fear is you" music ramping up in the back ground when it's mentioned.
Imagine this:
You're a Russian soldier. After years of slogging through the ranks, offering your bussy to higher-ups and paying half your salary in bribes, you are now in an elite position, and get to use one of the 5 laser designators in the Russian army.
You spot a tank a mile away, and while switching on the designator, you think about how those poor westoids are going to be killed by your superior technology. Only for the tank turn around and look directly at you the instant the laser hits it, splatter your remains over the entire room, and then deploy 64 smoke grenades. All without slowing down.

Test beds by default are going to be OP since they ignore things like cost, reliability or how effective the system *actually* rather than conceptually is.
Aren’t all prototype vehicles like this though? Some old Soviet Designs were at least comparable like the Object 490s

Thats the thing though. Theyre for testing only. This is why requirments are set for orders, otherwise you get vehicles that look good on paper but fail at what theyre supposed to do.

@@Spookston Do you know if they ever planed to combined elements of the TTB and CATTB? I'm asking because the BLOCK III tank in the Armored Systems Modernization program from the 90s is depicted as haveing an unmanned turret like the TTB but also a 140mm gun like the CATTB. love you content.

You also need to sacrifice a months worth of hours to even get close to unlock it.

@@MrEpicSqueaky101 nah it takes a months worth of grinding to build one of the. 12,000 components in the one week long crafting event gaijin releases but you need to craft it four times to get the tank and the crafting time for each completed vehicle is 24 hours

The CATTB is basically the cold war equivalent of the Abrams X but looking at it Abrams X components looks more likely to be used atleast sensor wise
What about the German one? Basically all big nations in the West did a 140mm project. If the Cold War continued Germany would have fielded a Leopard 2A5 with the 140mm gun.

the French one is basically just a gun upgraded Leclerc
But that gun became the ASCALON project Nexter want to put on the MGCS, if it goes as planned
@@carlomendoza6173 yes that’s the Swiss gun but Germany had the NPzK-140 that was based on the 120mm l44 and the knowledge was then used to build the 130mm.

@Spookston: there were actually TWO M1 CATTB testbeds.
The first one, named CATTB Phase I, used a normal M1 (not a M1A1 like the M1 Thumper AKA the ATAC Demonstrator) hull (note the sprocket retaining rings and the rearmost, trapezoidal skirt segment inherited from the M1) and it still had an AGT1500 gas turbine and the original M1 trackbelts (see @03:01).
CATTB Phase II, built a year later, used a completely scratch-built hull designed to house the smaller XAP1000 AIPS diesel engine (which, in turn, allowed the inclusion of those vertically-stacked, non-ready ammo carousels in the hull, in the space left vacant by the more compact engine - allowing a whopping *_39-round_* loadout, either of the 120mm OR the 140mm ammo variety) and it had new, single-shoe experimental trackbelts (barely visible, but your video thumbnail shows the Phase II vehicle).
That's the only way to visually differentiate the two CATTB prototypes:
- Phase I: AGT-1500 with rear exhaust grille, two-shoe M1 tracks.
- Phase II: AIPS with NO rear exhaust grille, single-shoe tracks.
Both of them had the XM291 120/140mm gun, but IIRC it was the M1 Thumper that first trialed the 140mm XM291 (with three different barrel lengths, too!) at Aberdeen Proving Ground (there even was a companion vehicle, derived from the MLRS chassis, that could reload the Thumper's turret bustle carousel with a robotic feed arm that latched onto a rearming port built into the Thumper's bustle).
All of these vehicles are at the Sierra Army Depot at Hurlong now.

CATTB and Panzer 87-140 are my favorite modern prototype tanks tbh
I saw this prototype personally when I worked a summer internship at the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong CA way back in 2011. Cool looking tank. Never got to stick my head inside unfortunately. Up until a few years ago I could locate it on the base with google maps but they have since moved it somewhere else on base or shipped it off entirely. I tried looking for it but the satellite pictures of the base are too low resolution to distinguish it from all the other tanks stored there.
I know the ATAC System Demonstrator aka THUMPER is located here, 40.20512860551921, -120.13609225826659 no idea about the CATTB tho.
They still had the "cowboy fringes" installed when you saw it?

When the military is capable of making the most advanced and potentially dangerous tank, but then says, “Nah, I don’t really feel like it.” and produces a much weaker version
I mean US built the f22 and look how crazy the rest of the world went trying to match it may as well build crappier tanks and keep a few secret upgrades in your back pocket for when u need it

Thats probably because the F22 situation would happen. This thing would just be an expensive toy that nothing could possibly rival. Just sitting waiting for the world to catch up.

i really think you should talk about the M1 TTB, that went into service but never saw combat, its quite interesting and i definitely wanna see it in game
Great video as always spookston! Could you do a video on the accuracy of the SAM launchers in game? As far as I can tell a lot of the SAMs have SACLOS guidance in game but not in real life. Obviously something like the adats or stormer should act this way cause they are beam riding but I havent seen anything to suggest say a roland had anything past "optical guidance" like a maverick missile
this tank is the equivalent of going onto for example a pre-built computer retailer's site and just speccing in the best stuff possible

M1a2c is supposed to have a longer barrel to be basically that would probably add 15-30% additional penetration alot of penetration is limited to the length of the penetrator and its density/hardness

You should do a vid on the Object 195, recently I saw some sources saying that it used Kaktus ERA on the hull front and turret, a precursor to relikt that was also to be used on the black eagle

I loved the video. Wish you would have talked more about why it never got put into production or entered service in any capacity. I understand you said that the primary reason was simply that it wasn't mean to, probably similarly to the reasoning of the Megatron Challenger or the AbramsX being test beds for technological advances, but it would still be interesting to know why so many of these seemingly amazing features and technologies never got incorporated with any vehicles (as far as I'm aware)

I do wonder why they thought that 1 meter of KE protection was nessesay because even the 152mm guns they thought would be on the FST (future soviet tank) models would not have that kind of pentration.Very informative video love your content.

Very interesting vehicle. I have one question though: How improtant is the caliber of the gun in mbts? Im asking since you mentioned 120 or 140mm canon, but does that make such a big difference in times of apfsds etc?
of course, more dakka is always good.
caliber increase is always a big upgrade, but it depends on how advanced it is, like the russian 125mm used on the t14 armata has a penetration of nearly 1m of RHA, but the 152mm on the obj 292 which is alot older had a penetration of like 700mm, but usually a larger caliber will have much better penetration

Only game i've ever seen this Abrams in was Armored Warfare in the little time i played that game before i gave up on it with the lack of players on both PVE and PVP.
