I am not that interested in grammar rules, as I think they can often confuse you. You need to expose yourself to a lot of the language so that you feel what is right. A native speaker confirmed to me that I am right. The fact that there are millions of examples of "et autres sujets" in google should confirm it to you. "autres sujets" is "other subjects. "des autres sujets" is " some other subjects." Forget your rules. Read them and then forget them.

Je suis tombée sur cette vidéo parce qu'on m'a parlé de richard et je dois dire que son français est vraiment très bon, excellent en fait avec un léger accent anglais très agréable à l'écoute . Steve a un accent anglais et canadien mais je ne connais pas ses origines(et si ça se trouve je me trompe complètement, il n'est peut être pas canadien). Son français est aussi excellent. Ha j'ai vraiment du chemin à faire en Anglais !!!

Cela me fait beaucoup de plaisir d'écouter un interview tel interessant, Steve et Richard! L'interview est presque trop court... Moi je suis une autre personne qui est comme Richard très contente avec son cours de langue. Ma professeur de danois est autrichienne est parle un danois avec une excellente prononciation. Elle corrige mon danois quand nous lisons des textes au cours, cela m'aide beaucoup. J'ai eu plusieurs professeurs non-natifs de bonne qualité dans ma vie! Fasulye
Richard is not Macedonian, he is English. Yes, there are differences in how well different people speak or pronounce languages. But everyone can do it. It starts with the first languages we learn, and gets easier with each successive language. Some do better than others but all can enjoy learning languages.
I think polyglots are sometimes too modest of their accomplishments. You both are amazing
i'm soooo proud of myself by this video because i could understnad like 90% of it ahahha btw i'm a native spanish speaker. i grew up speaking spanish and english (second language) and learning french for quite some time. hopefully i can also be a polyglot!! idk with what language to start with for my fourth language because i'm interested in italian, german and swedish :S any tips?? loved the video thanks for sharing!!
welp, it's a bit late - you probably already made your choice but either way, i might be able to help..
italian is a beautiful language and as a bonus is pretty similar to spanish. with french as well it should be pretty "easy" for you to learn.
i put easy in quotation marks because learning a language is never easy. it takes a lot of time and effort to attain mastery.
i had the luck of growing up with two languages, those being german AND swedish so i can tell you a bit more about those.
german is a pretty hard language to learn grammatically. but it is pretty useful as germany is a big economy and german is in demand with translation from what ive heard.
swedish is only spoken in sweden by about 8 million people. that is not a lot. but swedish is a beautiful language imo plus its way easier to learn than german.
the only thing that might be hard is the pronunciation, as it is very hard to get right. i depends on what you think youre going to get the most out of.
if you wanna travel to sweden, germany/austria/switzerland, or italy any time soon. and another factor is culture as well. every language is interconnected to its culture.
so if you for example dont like the harshness of germans, you might not wanna learn that language, as youre probably mostly gonna speak to germans when you wanna practice.
Developmental scientists have recently shown that, while learning multiple languages from childhood can slow language development in the beginning, the child will eventually not only catch up to their monolingual peers but surpass them. I think it's worth sticking it out through the rough bit.
I don't speak French but i listen a lot to the polyglot interviews in this language.

Steve, ton accent français est presque parfait! Quelques petites choses vraiment très mineures à améliorer (comme à un moment le son "ou" de "souvent"), et n'importe quel français de France te prendra pour un français natif!
Vraiment bravo, peu de personnes atteignent un tel niveau ;)

je suis tout a fait d'accord, mais je dois dire qu'il y a des langues qui sont tellement rares, il y a peu de ressources pour les etudier et sans voyager c'est presque impossible d'atteindre un bon niveau en cette langue.

Personnellement je n'aime pas parler une langue étrangère avec quelqu'un qui parle la même langue maternelle que moi, je trouve que ça sonne faux.J'espère vous voir tous les 2 à Bratislava, c'est grâce à vous que je me suis passionné pour les langues.

You will end up speaking Spanish with an Italian intonation= An Argentinian (jejeje). I wouldn't recommend studying two very close romance languages like for example, Spanish&Portuguese or Spanish&Italian at the same time, Italian is the closest in terms of phonetics to Spanish, but Portuguese shares a very similar vocabulary to Spanish. Only do that when you reach intermediate level in one of them.

I would prefer to hear from a native speaker. I don't understand what you are saying about "parallelism" and "countable things in an indefinite sense". However, to me, if we are referring to "other things" in general, it is "autres questions". If we are referring to "those specific other things" then "des autres questions (dont on a parlé)' is correct. That is just how it feels to me. I don't do fancy grammar explanations.

Since you are interested in French grammar, it's "d'autres sujets" instead of "des autres sujets". "Des autres" is "de + les autres".

Steve you are my hero. I subscribed to you channel long time ago and cannot stop watching your videos over and over. I speak four languages: Spanish (mother tongue), English (learned it as teenager and I live in the US for four years now), portuguese (learned it when I lived in Brazil as a child, but I forgot a lot and not using it as much), and French (learned it when I was 23). Because of my job ( all day in the office) i have not time to keep listening french and portuguese anymore as much, could you give us a “recipe “ about how to maintain our languages for all those who really busy at work? Do you have a formula? Thank you!

Nope, but he *does* speak English, French, Spanish, Welsh, German, Macedonian, Swedish, Italian, Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian, Portuguese, Czech, Catalan, Russian, Dutch, Romanian and Albanian.

J'aime bien cette video. Ce qui concerne les capacites de l enfant d apprendre les langues, j aimerais bien savoir comment vous faites pour apprendre la langue ecrite aux enfants. Je trouve chez mes enfants, de leur apprendre la langue parle, c est une question de parler avec eux et de construire un milieu naturel ou la langue est utilise. Mais d etudier avec des livres pour apprendre a lire, ca c est autre chose. Merci.
The title is fine, but yes, I wouldn't use it in an academic/official text ("et autres..." is used in enumeration and it can seem that "élever" refers also to "autres sujets"). I can be wrong - but thank you both for a matinal brain exercise :-)

I'm not a native French speaker, so I'm no expert. But if I heard Richard speak without knowing that he's Macedonian, I would just assume that's he's French. I hear no difference between his accent and native French speakers'. But as I watch these vids, I'm more and more convinced that this is *not* something anybody can do, despite the modest claims of these talented folk. Just as some people are naturally athletic or good at math, others are naturally talented at language acquisition.

I was wondering why didn't both plural nouns follow "des". The website I found says 'des' is an indefinite article, much like "a" in English, only plural, like "some", which is usually omitted in English. In both instances "some questions" is implied rather then "the questions". I'm not proficient in French grammar either, and I didn't mean to imply I'm sure that I'm correct but I actually do like grammar a lot. Of course a native's explanation would be best.

I live in northern France and this is the first time i've EVER heard someone use passé simple in the spoken language. Which is weird because apparently he doesn't read a lot.

Parfait. Il n'y a pas d'autre mot pour décrire la qualité de vos verbes respectifs. C'est d'autant plus remarquable lorsqu'on sait que ce n'est pas votre langue principale.
Vous rendez-vous compte que vous parlez mieux le français que beaucoup, beaucoup d'autres français eux-mêmes ? ^^

Steve, on dit "l'apprentissage des langues" et non pas "des languages". En plus, en français "language" s'écrit sans u : langage. Et ce mot n'a pas tout à fait le même sens.
Ah, he only lives in Macedonia? Yes, I agree that anybody can do it, just not to this degree. I could learn calculus if I were really determined, but it would be a struggle and my head would start smoking, while for somebody else it would come easily. Likewise, I could dedicate myself to languages for the rest of my life, 12 hours a day. I'm certain I would never reach fluency in 20 languages! Maybe five. It's a gift to be admired, just as we admire gifted chess players, star athletes, etc.

Leur conseil (je suis sur que je leur ai entendu dire que cela est le cas) serait de ne pas étudier des langues similaires en même temps (comme l'italien et l'espagnol), au moins jusqu'au moment où vous avez des fondations solides de mots et de grammaire.
