This is astonishingly beautiful! I used to paint 'icons' when I was still at school. They are of course not real icons, but my parents still have them. This is the first time I see how it's really done.

I have always wanted to learn how to write icons with egg tempura. I have mostly done mosaics and poetry. Painting is new to me but you are a very good and clear teacher. You give just the right amount of information and instruction and great clarity of demonstrating. I could never afford in my life at this moment to study but you are making my study a reality. I find your videos so helpful. God bless you!

My iconography instructor found that mixing a drop of dish soap in the egg tempera also allows the paint to sit on top of the gold foil very easily. I’ve had success with that.

I prefer this style of painting more than the smooth style. I liked your comment about it being more painterly- i completely agree! There's no texture/visual interest in the smooth style to me. What a beautiful piece of art, thank you for sharing. As a non artist I had next to no comprehension of your art/iconography language, however I do understand putting St. Anthony's struggle in his expression (a picture speaks a thousand words). I'm a black sheep Protestant trying to find his roots in church history, understanding that we are God's icons is imperative to understanding that icons are not idol worship, as many of us Protestants presume, they are a 'thanksgiving (so to speak, and probably so much more)' back to God for 'all (creation)' He has given us using 'what (redeemed matter)' He has given us. Speaking the truth not only in word but in deed, painting an icon is worship, the art being worship from the heart, the heart Christ redeemed. Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Hi! Nice! I'm also an iconographer (and game developer). I like to burnish my gold leaf so it looks almost like a mirror and thus the paint won't stick. When this happens I usually clean the gold leaf with a cotton swab and a bit of alcohol. It removes the oils on the surface and then the paint sticks really nice. Lovely videos, keep doing it!

It’s interesting, the process seems to follow a saints path. The outline of a man appears, his face becomes covered, then through slow creation, he becomes sanctified and sainted. But his inheritance is present from the beginning in the gilding work.

Thank you for sharing. Can you create a full course on how to paint this icon from beginning to end. I would purchase my own materials and board - now we can’t travel to courses it would be good to have an online course - you can just make videos to share with students or do it on Zoom and then upload the videos later to Dropbox. I would be very interested. This what you are doing is okay but it does not give all the details that are required for a student to follow along. I would only be interested in egg tempera - it is so lovely - I have a little experience with it . God bless.

Painting the Light . Thank you for getting back to me. I need more than technical feedback on something I am working on. I am looking for a course where I watch the Iconographer make a icon from the beginning to the end, and I follow along. The teacher explains each step he/she is doing and gives the names of materials used and techniques etc. And to have videos that i can go back to if i can not keep up with the teacher while he/she is working. God bless , and again, thank you for your response . :)

Hello, I very like your videos, do you think birch plywood and MDF (HDF) are the best for egg tempera? 2- For large pictures (in. 50 x 30 in.) Do I need a thickness of 18 millimeters? I am waiting for answering, thank you.

Hi Nidal. Mdf is not a great board as it deteriorates with humidity. I don't know what birch is, but a non warping plywood is the best. Thickness is up to you

@@PaintingtheLight Thank you very much, but before I paint much better to stick very fine linen on plywood, and make gesso on the canvas when stuck on the plywood?

@@PaintingtheLight If you found your image online, I think you could put a link to it in your description section. If not, you might simply focus your camera on the reference image at the beginning of the recording for a couple of seconds. That way, we could do a screen shot and get a decent replica. Thanks.

Hello, I’m from the Netherlands and a painter in the Cretan School as well. I’m a student of Jan Verdonk who was a student of Neoklis Kolliopoulos.
In your video’s you use the Greek names for the different layers of paint, like ‘proplasmos’ and ‘photisma’. You use also ‘psimachies’ if I’m writing it correctly. Can you tell me what the correct Greek spelling is? And what the proper English translation is regarding to icon painting. Thank you in advance.
