In this video I paint the byzantine Icon of Virgin Mary and I explain the process of blending the skin tones on her face. I have done a better job in showing my glass palette and mixing on it the pigments so that you can get a better idea on it.
I hope this will be a useful tutorial for a process that is very confusing and hard in iconography

One of the things these videos are helpful for, not only technical things, but encouragement. I see small things I can change, but also that I'm more or less generally doing the right thing, and that the problems I am having are things I can figure out and deal with just by more practice and experimentation and following suggestions.

Friend Antonis, what a beautiful image of Our Lady you made for us? I'm not fed up with seeing it .... I'm still watching how much the extra camera helps with color mixing .. An enjoyable video that I know I will see several more times. Maybe at some point you stick a cloth on the wall of your house and make us a life-size Hagiography with acrylic or plastic. Lovely. I mix the colours the same way. Straight out of the dry pigment jar. That way i get zero waste. I know iconographers who mix the colour with emulsion in plastic containers. This is good for wall painting, but in icons, one uses such a small amount that the rest of the mixed colour will dry up in the container or start to stink.

That red might be hematite red or indian red. At least someone else in an iconography video recommended that red as useful, and the pictures look similar. Great video, once again! I'm still learning to draw and impatience to start painting.

Thank you so much! Godd care of kolinsky is to rinse them gently, not letting tempera dry on them and use soap softly to wash them at the end of the session

Hi there, I really like your work, thanks for sharing. The red color that looks like burnt clay is called terracotta, I think.

Very beautiful and helpful! I just got a set of casein tempera (milk) paints. Have you used this kind of paint for icons? I got them as a substitute for acrylic and I am curious if they could be used for icons.
Thank you so much.... I have never used those.... If I'm not mistaken, the great iconographer Fotis Kontoglou wrote in his book 'Ekfrasis' about casein tempera that is not reliable for icon painting.... But not sure...

I did an experiment, following your example, and tried to paint a Feyoum portrait with casein paints. instagram.com/p/CGoUtSTA02j/ I found that the paints did poorly for this purpose. I will stay with egg. Casein dries quickly but the color shifts as you lay it down, and it does not go down smoothly like egg does. Thanks for your feedback and your lovely videos. My wife and I love to watch.
