I used to slice 10kg buckets of onions. Chew gum while you do it. If you encounter a rogue savage onion, open your eyes in front of a blowing fan or aircon. Since learning the gum hack I've only cried once.

For cutting onions you can try running some cold water over the onion after you peel skin off for 10 sec or so and then cut.

A tip for not crying while cutting onions, get some paper towel, dampen it under the tap, scrunch up and put it on your chopping board near the onions

a simple hack that malays do to avoid tears when cutting onion is to cut the base of the onion where the roots are first.. then you proceed to cut the onions..
speaking about hacks, that chopping board is a smart idea.. brilliant..
