Jami years ago I used to work at Petco in the fish and reptile dept. I was an avid collector of Betta Fish and at one time had 12 males. All had their own homes, as they will fight other fish. But, they are awesome and full of personality. And you can make them act flashy if you put a mirror up to them and they will think it's another fish and flash their tails and puff up. They look beautiful when they show off. They breathe air (they are called a labyrinth fish) as they have these special gills that help them. They only need to eat every couple days (special betta food or blood worms) and do best in a small tank like 3-5 gallons and need a 25% water change every 2 weeks. They love plants (fake or real) as they will not only hang out near them, but they also sometimes lay on the top and sit there and breathe air once in a while. So cute! All my knowledge is from the early 2000's as I have not had them for years now, so maybe some info has updated. This is what I personally know. They are a fun fish! Just be careful with them getting too cold, if weather is freezing you would do best to have a heater in the tank.

One day after cleaning I did not slide the divider in correctly I walked away for several minutes and when I came back they were both on one side and one fish was parading around flashing while the other was in a corner with his fins shredded. Took me months of treating him to get his fins back, but they were never as beautiful as before my other male beat the tar out of him.
Been in this predicament. started with a $5 Beta ended with $1000 tank, stand, 2-12" cat fish, 2-pleco and 2-rope eels and natural looking decor. my betta lived to be 4, others till 10. When they passed I sold the equipt. I think it is simular to how people start with plants and wind up with an entire greenhouse.

Went from a 29 gallon freshwater to a 129 salt water! Big difference, but so much fun! Have done, soft and hard corals, anemones, with Damselfish. Best thing we ever did.
Fish tanks were so relaxing when I was married, and the kids were little. we had a 55-gallon tank. I loved it, but it was a lot of work for my husband. And it was his Hobby❤

We rescued a Betta when one of our tenants moved and left his. I had him for two years and spent sooo much on him for meds, better equipment, etc. when he got sick. I researched a lot on the best pain free way to send him to the great byeandbye when I knew there was no coming back. All of the experts said to use clove oil..it's fast and most humane they said. BS I cried for days. Don't ever believe what they tell you regarding that.
When I see Beta fish in little tubs I feel sad and just now the HP phrase to the snake, it must get boring just sitting there day after day with people staring at you. LOL they are beautiful fish.
HI Jami, Bruce would like some real plants if possible. You are a gardener, but you can also be an aquascape gardener growing beautiful genuine aquatic plants.
Beta are beautuful, but there are so many more beautiful fish. My brother has a 150 gallon tank and a 20 gallon and I think at least 2 , 10 gallon aquariums. He has always had fish. They are all beautiful. The big 150 gallon he takes out half the water every couple of weeks refills it and it helps keep the tank clean. His filters are the best you can buy. He buys live food for some of his fish like Lou did. I tried raising fan tale guppies. It lasted a while then I got tired of it . I was young and so I gave them all to my brother. Have fun setting up your tank and enjoy your fish. I can stare at them when I'm in the room with them. There suppose to be good therapy.😊

Be ware if using live plants from the pet store. They can have snail eggs that multiply very quickly and can over take your tank fast. Speaking from experience here🙋♀️
Theyre called "Siamese fighting fish " here in OZ. We once owned a 6' saltwater aquarium....which was STUNNING.We even managed to grow beautiful coral in with the fish. We had a "BETTA" in a tank beside it who was so comical.... Fish are wonderful to help you relax and de stress ... Our 3 dogs would sit looking up at the tanks and next thing ..flat out asleep 🤣🤣🤣
I got goldfish when I moved out of my parents' house. When I was small, we would always have goldfish and then a Jack Dempsey plus a pisco allerg fish. After the goldfish died then I decided to get betta fish. I always loved the purple and blue black color one. I got a 3 gallon, then a 5 gallon, and my last one I did was a 10 gallon fish tank. That was back in 2018, I think. I still want one again after seeing Lu's and yours

Did the EXACT same thing yesterday at Petsmart. They have amazing aquarium sales right now. Got my tank 1/2 price ! Did my tank in a southwestern theme. Set it up last night & can't wait to get some fishes in about a week.
They inject those bright neon colored fish with dye. Get your Betta a plant he can lay and chill out in. I love the little Cory catfish that clean up the bottom.
I had Beta fish for a while. Now have KOI. My Koi are like 12" long so I have to have a big tank... I bring them inside in wintertime bc outdoor pond is only about Just under 3ft deep so it freezes solid-No swim room. Anyhow I love having them in come winter & love their koi pond outside during summertime. Have fun with your fish tank. Have had so many indoor aquariums over the years Oh what Fun!! PS Over the summer my Koi went from peachy white to golden Yellow with Orange parts. Beautiful. Unfortunately my beautiful butterfly KOI passed this past summer (Long fins). Omg it took me 5 yrs to convince my hubby to have fish....now I have a 20 gallon and 10 gallon set up and have platys cardinal tetras and 2 Cory catfish lol and someone had babies but too small to figure out which one
When I was setting up my fish tank, I decided not to go with those little tiny bags that are in the stores of rock because I went and bought a 50 pound bag of P gravel that I can use other places for the same price as one of those little teeny tiny bags at Petsmart or Walmart.
Years ago when our boys were young we had a 25 gallon tank with large fancy goldfish. I loved them and it got to be expensive hobby as our goldfish were $25 each at that time. Then they get sick and you have to treat them all. My husband did the water and filter cleanings. However, it’s a fun hobby.
Id love another fish tank! Been thinking about it. I had a 50 gallen in the Navy with glass built into the back and I had Angels, sharks, Sicilian worm, catfish cleaner fish, etc. ❤
One time as a teenager, I bought some tetras to go in my aquarium with several other fish, including an angel fish. When I released the tetras, an angel fish immediately scooped up a tetra fish and swam around with the tetra's head sticking out of it's mouth. I was really upset.

I got a goldfish for my granddaughter when our dog passed to console her. That was wrong on me, i got so into it. Within a month we had a ten gallon tank. Then in 3 months it grew to 55 gallons. Now my granddaughter doesn't care about it especially when its feeding or cleaning time. I do all the work, spend all the money. Im obsessed, want a built-in wall tank....all this from a goldfish.....would have been easier to just get another dog/puppy. Way cheaper too😂😂😂 Whose idea was this. Oh yeah mine😮
I would take some hot tap water to be tested. Why if you draw hot water let it cool down in one gallon container. It help not to cloud the tank. Why test, so you know what kind of chemical you need to add. Have fun with Bruce. 😊
My favorite bettas are the females. they don't have long tails but they literally change colors when they get excited. My Chuc Yiet would go from white with black stripes to cobolt blue to blue body black head. she would swim thru a ring, jump for food and enjoyed the tv reflection (movement). There are some fish they get along with. but gold fish will try to kill bettas too.
I am so glad I didnt have to fuss cause of the gallon size!! 6 gallons is great. If you need any advice just let me know. Lol. Dont know how? But I have aquariums and love them and watch a lot of TH-cam videos. Best are kgtropicals and prime time Aquatics. Oh, live plants are the best. Brings your outside plant fetish into an aquarium.

Live plants are better, but be careful, sometimes they may harbor unseen initially little nasties that can harm the fish. I would think you shouldn't have to worry about that from PetSmart. Also, neons are only one type of tetra. (Aren't I helpful?) There are so many types of catfish and sharks. I used to run the pet department a few hundred years ago. Accientally inherited it when the original girl got fired. One moron put a beautiful turquoise male beta in with a brilliant red male. I was able to save the turquoise from harm. Informed the manager of the other employees willful neglect. Bought the turquoise beta and brought him home. He was magnificent and my young son and I named him Siam as another name for betas is Siamese Fighting fish. He's now buried after a very long life, in my parents back yard along with other beloved pets. Whoever ended up with that house, has an unknown pet cemetary!
Do NOT get an irredescent catfish. unless you have a huge tsnk or plan to eat it. They are actually swai. They and several otjet common pet fish get to over 1' in length and need moving water. I don't like that chain pet stores care little about the fish. It is like auction sale barn treatment for pets.

No fish should b in a smaller tank then a 10 gallon tank with a heater and filter please get a proper size tank for ur fish
