- 12/23/2023 Cedar rapids, Ia. My first time to Otis Junction was very interesting. Here I explain and show the track profile chart for the original main line through town. At Beverly Yard I lucked out and caught a train as it came off the original main line and into the yard. I caught multiple trains throughout the video!

My father worked in the woods of Oregon as a road builder. I don't know how many stories I got when I was young.
As I got older and wanted to know he could not remember the answers. Now he's gone I can't even ask.

That was a fantastic mixed freight Red! There are some things I don't think I've ever seen before. 2 black box cars and a white coal car. I loved the steel plates too! Long and fast, just the way I like them! Great catch. Thanks 👍! 😊😊😊❤❤❤

Hey Thanks Red!!!! Really brings back memories of Beverly yards with my dad before he died in 1974. I grew up in Cedar Rapids 67-86 before moving to CA for college and eventually settled in Dallas TX. He used to work for the CNW. That engine house and office building is still there after 50 years. I was wondering about the Otis spur into downtown and looked at pictures of the old passenger station and also parts of Quaker Oats. I’ve snucked in to look around. Remembering Rock Island and Milwaukee Roads. Often wondered about CRANDIC routes and what you showed made sense. Thanks for the videos! I missed my dad during the early 1970’s.

Hello to Red Sr. We’ve heard him mentioned often in Red’s videos. Looking at Google Cargill has a large corn processing plant just to the north of Otis. Makes sense that the yard is 4 Cargill. Notice that the yard is completely fenced. I wonder if the UP allows Cargill to use their plant switcher to move cars to and from the yard. That might be the reason for the double derails protecting the main.

Nice one, Red. Thats a pretty cool spot there at the old main. I think they got some of those Spring Frogs at the local 'Y' at Bluescope. They call the derailer a Scotch Block as well here. I was like you with that mixed freight that turned into a coal train. Interesting! Thanks mate & have a great TGiF!

Great video as always! A friend of mine used to have a house just west of where you were standing in between the two main lines right before you go over the tracks.The driveway is still there but the house is gone. The new yard there belongs to Cargill. Thanks again!

That new yard belongs to Cargill. It supports their corn milling operation there. The neighbors fought Cargill and the city in court to try and stop it. I guess we know who won;)

Talk about an obscure location with the amount of history that goes with it. First time I've ever seen the double derailleur plus the lonely signal to get on the main. One look at the old track profile certainly tells you why they wanted it out wandering all over the place plus one can imagine the speed reductions. I don't know if those cars came out of Butler yard or not but we have loaded large amounts of salt recently for rail shipment out of the port. Obscure flat cars for steel the one being Colorado and Wyoming going back empty in the Iowa Chicago and Eastern coming out loaded. Usually don't see too many ballast cars moving during the winter but not some of them are the SI Spokane International reporting marks. Great footage of that new holding yard just past Otis which was the name of the old guy who always slept in the jail on Andy Griffith and equally rare Railroad in Indiana where the Monon crossed the New York Central main line at grade
Good timing with the local coming back and then capturing the priority train flying by. On that second fly by those two wires started to look kind of close. Just saw a clip and also some stills from Kevin Salisbury of 3 former yellow CNW insulated box cars on the East Penn Ry which apparently are used as storage sheds since Circa 2005. A bit of graffiti and some Rust but for mid-1960s cars not too bad. Thanks again for the good footage of this obscure place
You're welcome Paul B! Just like my Dad said "That double derail will put it on the ground for sure" I'm glad he showed me that spot, it was definitely off the beaten path. He said they used that old main line for a detour in the past. Very slow going as you can see. Yes the power lines were everywhere I went that day. The drone has obstacle avoidance but you never know. I see the IRM now has the old CNW SD50 from the Silvis shop👍Silvis is my next stop.

That’s a great spot to catch trains Red! I work for an asphalt company and we just paved the parking lot in July 2023 for the new rail yard going in for the UP right around the corner from that location. It’s for Cargill I believe.
You can see it off to the right from your drone shot after that very first train went through. Pretty neat!

No problem. Yeah they do a lot of switching from Beverly to Quaker Oats down to Cargill at Otis so they wanted that extra yard for more storage so they didn’t have to store all the extra cars on the “spur” line since they will sometimes have trains come off the main and back in to drop off cars at Cargill then continue back on to the mainline and on to their next destination
The ex Amtrak P40DCs at Wabtec Albia are being rebuilt and repainted in Keewatin Railway colors.
A great day chasing trains and especially when you're spending time with your dad! I bet that brought back many good memories for him!

Pretty interesting to see that line going up to CR is the original mainline. Also, that's an awesome former BNSF chooch on that ethanol
Yep, my Dad explained the story about the original main line to me. That ethanol train was booking pretty good!

Nice one, Red! So CRANDIC services 4 different railroads on their Cedar Rapids to Iowa City corridor, UP, CN, IANR and IAIS. Who services Quaker Oats? I know you did a video on that back a ways. I think that's UP if I remember. Also interesting that the city of Cedar Rapids still allows local UP traffic along with the other railroads, but were opposed to the heavy through traffic on the mains going through town
Thanks Bekleidung! I believe the CN, and UP service Quaker Oats. Possibly the CRANDIC too. That main line change was interesting and happened a long time ago.
To my recollection the thru trackage is referred to as the "linn county cutoff" built to bypass cedar rapids.

Thank you for going back to Beverly Yard in Fairfax, Iowa to show us Control Point Otis which was at one time the east end of the former CNW mainline into Cedar Rapids, Iowa. That derail on what is now the spur line to Cedar Rapids from the east looks like it could prevent any piece of railroad equipment that wanted to head toward the mainline. Like you said, it does not look like the east end of the spur to downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa is used very often. Is there a name for the point where the west end of the spur that comes out from Cedar Rapids, Iowa? It was interesting to see that empty westbound ethanol train had a Norfolk Southern engine and a BNSF engine for power. Your Dad looks great! Is he enjoying his retirement?
You're welcome Thomas! My Dad said the same thing about the double derail. Not sure on the West end of the spur for a name. Probly an industrial lead title. Yes he is enjoying retirement. He's been retired since 2011 and lives in Houston, Tx.

Man I miss getting out and exploring like you did in this video. I use to explore every where, I use to love checking out all the diamonds etc. That first UP coning out of that fog looked killer. I have a train coming out of dence fog but going much much slower. It was just leaving a yard. It is pretty weird how it was a mixed freight that turned into an empty coal. I believe in another video of yours, it show them making that yard, they were just laying down the gravel, i mean I think it's that yard. Your history lesson on all this is much appreciated. Your drone work is again fantastic. You can get good range with it it seems. The veiw of that tank train when it was coming around that curce looked awesome, just an extremely long black snake. She was moving as well! I've already said this but I really do miss just jumping in my car and exploring along tracks. That was one hell of a long mixed freight, a mile or two. Only two engines if I recall correctly. I had to turn down the volume when you were sitting right beside the bell lol, wasn't expecting a train to come by so fast!! Sounded awesome after I went back and watch it with my volume back up! Volume bwck down. Great video! CHEERS

I really enjoy these informative videos. However I wish you wouldn’t trespass out onto the tracks as you did at Otis. I used to drive BNSF crews and part of our safety training was watching videos of trains coming without warning and striking people or vehicles. So the rule was NEVER stand on the tracks (even when the train is stopped, as it was when we were swapping crews). Please be safe so we can enjoy your videos for years to come.

Pretty fortunate for the CNW/UP that the mains do not run through C.R. With the traffic on that line, there would have to be grade separations. I wonder if the old main was used for passenger trains when they were still running to allow them to get up to C.R. I'll bet your "old man" knows the answer.
I'll have to ask him about the passenger trains Fred. He did remember times when they used the old main as a detour. Very slow going.

They use the old main line headed to the North. The old main looked really rusty South of that new yard.

Nope that bell was going off at the crossing with that long mixed freight. The only bell I added was the intro bell👍
