603 MTech is the real deal. I sent Michael a note about my Mercedes this morning. He called me and discussed options to rectify what my local independent mechanic was recommending. I sincerely appreciate Michael going above and beyond when far too many people today wouldn't even take 5 minutes to follow up. If you're in the NH area, I suggest you check these guys out!

Its astonishing that he actually said that Mercedes didnt do anything when they actually did. They obviously revised this issue because the engines from beginning of 2014 and on wont have this issue. Not taking anything away from what he is saying but they did obvioulsy fix the issue. I am a Mercedes technician and its crazy how it seems to affect some engines and not all before 2014. I have seen pre 2014 with over 100k and no issues and other that have many issues. Not sure what the difference is but there are different variants of this engine. Maybe thats the case.. I dont know... Just saying!!!... I will say this the M278 2014 and after are much much better!!!

I drive a 2014 GL500 with an M278 engine. It's been leaking coolant for over 8 months. At first, I had to add coolant every 15 days, but now I need to do it every 3-4 days. I've used four 5-liter cans of coolant in this time. Every morning, I add up to 50 ml of coolant to keep it full. I watched a video and now I'm worried the coolant might mix with the engine oil, which could cause more problems. Four months ago, when I changed the engine oil, the mechanic said it wasn't mixed with coolant. But the leak has gotten worse since then, and I'm concerned the oil could now be diluted with coolant.

You can check by using the oil dipstick, Coolant tank or by observing under the oil fill cap. You will notice a thicker than normal fluid. If it looks light brown, and not clear when you shine a light, than you may have an issue.

    • @aiyanshaikh1754

Most common in our 2014 gl500 also was the water pump. Original waterpump pulley was black the upgraded is silver it would leak behind it. Also the bottom hose connected or the thin turbo coolant lines infront of the water pump are super common in this gl. So check that. On top of the engine the black 3side breather hose I just used gasket maker paste to stop leaks it's easy, anyhow coolant leak on this engine should be priority or else major damages. Goodluck
Edit: I forgot to mention don't let fan or tools touch radiator. I cracked a small hole and repaired with steel epoxy/Jb weld. Working fine but just advise

    Hi Guys,
We have a 2013 CLS 550 I bought the car used. In my ownership oil changed at every 5k, LMolly oil only and under warranty had the tensioners changed, and now at the recent oil change discovered metal shavings in filter and old oil. My mechanic suggested to sell it and get a new vehicle. He explained that most likely it will get worse and will end up in a complete engine rebuild. I just want to understand what is causing this issue as I really like the car and if I am going to get another one it will be the same model.
    Thank you!

If the engine or other important things fail, you'll be glad you spent that 3k vs 8k or more. You can take it to a dealer for the fix OR find a reputable licensed mechanic that KNOWS how to work on these cars. Just understand how the warranty works. Understand how much the regular things (tires, brakes, insurance, putting gas in the car) will cost vs owning a more simple machine. If you can afford it and it doesn't break you then do it.

My ml63 new was 138k dollars ( I didn’t pay that !) as I saw the paperwork. Your telling me a beautiful rig like a ml63 at that price point will only last 99k=say 110k miles ? @@jeffreyhebda6709 Do oil changes (goes without saying fully synthetic 5W40) every 5k, high quality synth oil protects metal bits and has additives that keep the gaskets from going brittle/thinning. Switch to highmileage oil if you can.
Every 30k add liqui moly motor oil treatment, it rejuvenates gaskets.
Every 50k do a coolant flush, coolant from MB ONLY unless you know what you're doing
Keep the RPMs >2000 until engine reaches optimal temp
Remember heat and old oil is the N1 killer of plastics/gaskets in the enginebay.
My 2013 GL550 with M278 I bought brand new with 0miles in 2012 now has 269.000. I did EVERYSINGLE engine related service myself, even during the warranty period I was doing oil changes myself every 5k. (Noway in hell im stretching oil change interval to 10.000miles!).
All I did to the engine since I bought it was:
      fluid changes and filters
      waterpump+thermostat ~@135k
dreaded CPS+camshaft adjuster magnets 2 times, first set @90k second set @200k
sacrificial CPS+camshaft adjuster magnet harness extension
coolant plastic hose on top forward center of the engine @160k.
Thats all I did. The catastrophic problems as mentioned in the video are the result of people not doing maintenance treating it like a gm truck from 90s and following MB dealer oil change intervals.
90% of the timing chain and VVT related problems can be solved by shortening the fluid change intervals. Even shorter if car is used in extreme temp climates like up north or down south.
