I think this had a risk of air bubbles coming into the system as we saw at the end.
If we top up the oil first and then open the lid at the bottom the chances of air bubbles will reduce. Though this will make us waste more brake oil.

When you feel that the brake oil has minimum, then you top up it and if you feel that my brake oil has become very dark, then change it.......Kilometers not needed
