Press the brake repeatedly when all the air in the brake pipe comes out, then it will start working.

I think this had a risk of air bubbles coming into the system as we saw at the end.
If we top up the oil first and then open the lid at the bottom the chances of air bubbles will reduce. Though this will make us waste more brake oil.
