Man I always dream of being signed to a label…and making millions…but now I have second thoughts about it now it’s best to go independent and build ya own label
Hands down the best explanation of how this works. I’m going into PR and I tell people this all the time. Your favorite rapper on IG doesn’t own any of those clothes, cars or jewelry. It’s all rented and borrowed. Think about all these rappers you know of through IG; they have all these nice things yet we’ve never heard any songs from them. Most of them now make money off of partner/sponsorships which the label benefits off of too. These people get stuck in bad deals and end up there for the rest of their lives and the labels force them to stay in the spotlight to attract ppl. Yes, you can make great music in your house for a fourth of that 100k studio time. This is why REAL talent matters.
nice! One thing I think you should add about expenses is how shady they are. For instance, a record label gives you a budget to record. They give you a list of recording studios that you can go to. What the artist doesnt know is that recording studio has a relationship with the label. So whatever money they spend on recording gets a "kick back". Not knowing the label probably paid for the recording studio for the month or sometimes a year. So you pay the recording studio and then they send that bread right back to the label while in essence the label didnt lose a dime on you. Or the death clause in a contract. Record labels put life insurance on the artist. So in the event if they die, the label collects that bread. And what happens? They give you the radio play that you as an artist been looking for prior to your death. So they collect the money on your death and then collect the money AGAIN after you are dead. And EVERYTHING belongs to them.
That’s why you must negotiate your contract when getting a record deal. Fifth Harmony made millions for their label but the girls didn’t see none of that money. Until later they became superstars and brought lawyers and renegotiated their contracts. They toured all over the world. One of the girls said she didn’t even have money to take the bus.
How about not sign to a record label at all and pay for the marketing and publishing yourself to establish your own fan base then use your fan base to also start a record label where you will sign and promote other artists. Rather play the game than be a character in the game that is getting played
That's hell of a fantasy for most people. Since majority are beneath the upper economic class. Folks like me are living under someone else's roof, can't get a decent job and have no real skill, that's just like most people trying to make it. So eehhh idk. If you can then go for it, but everyone has their own struggle. Kinda feels like you feel special and different (like most people trying to make it) or maybe you're just unexperienced enough to have these type of fable/privelege thoughts.
The music industry is a mafia of sorts: unless you are part of the family, you will never get access to the people and the methods that will enable you to have a similar career to signed artists. You can try to market yourself independently and be relatively successful (as in have a wide fanbase via social media), but you will never get the publicity, media mileage, award nominations, etc. unless you make a deal with a major label.
Because the people that do that aren’t able to live off their careers. They could but they’ll be struggling to make ends meet. Plus what you’re saying takes a lot of time and money, when these rappers are mostly broke when they sign. For them choosing to sign for riches is better than hustling till who knows how long.
That’s exactly what Jay Z did back in 1996. Nobody wanted to sign him, so himself and 2 of his homies got their money’s together and their heads together and started their own label . First artist he sign was his god damn self.
Most artists don't own their masters that's why they're just sending out album after album to fulfill a contractual obligation. But once they're dropped by the label is when you see the artist's real worth.
I learned this 15-20 years ago and the grime keeps getting repeated. It’s best to create your own, but that’s impossible because you NEED connections. Therefore, play at your own risk!
Bro I been in this over 10 years and you're correct this is how the industry works on the backend for alot of artists. Most of all, artists need to use this fuel to orchestrate their own independence in this industry and work at not signing label deals but partnering with labels thats big. Much love and success yall!
@@ashutoshmishra8036 do ya own promo and build a good fan base to the point where u can get a distribution or joint venture deal with a label but only if it won’t fuck u up

I commend you for this video. This honestly should be written as an essay, NFT'd and published as it is one of the most accurate interpretations of the current state of the music industry. The Internet companies will ream you even harder. Like Uber. Cabbies make more money and are provided with a car. Uber tells you are only charged 17 percent. But you pay for your own maintenance and gas and if you deduct those costs, cabbie makes more. Plus you are all lone with Uber. At least as a cabbie if you get beat up, they will pay for your hospital bills. But Uber will tell you why you calling us. We just hook you up with the customers. That is all.
But when my deal ended I wasn't in physical debt, like a student loan, BUT if I would've signed another deal with-in 3 years of being released from that contract, I would have forfeited 2& 1/2 % of my royalties for that 3 years or the remainder of that 3 years, this is absolutely true, GREAT VIDEO, awesome work bro, keep spreading the good news🙏
Damn, I had no idea that the record execs tell the artist what they can say/can't say and what to wear and how to wear clothes. The music industry is manipulative asf 😬
@@alyssajones4368 Sony will not tell us this. Not even the mainstream media. But if you truly follow on which big names that've left Sony incuding those who used to treat Sony as their home, you could tell Sony is failing
Exactly. Like I told my one rapper friend (won't mention his name), an advance isn't JUST an advance. It's an advance Loan. No one is just going give you "free money." One thing we learned; if you're very popular and get millions of views/plays even without a deal, the label needs/wants you more than you needing them. You can take advantage of that. Like he did. He asked for a lot less of an advance, and asked if they could also help him start a record label. After the business, lawyer talks, he ending with the perfect deal and more than just the money and label.
Bro, you did a terrific job with this video, really well put together, and quality information. You deserve all the praises and success. Simply astonishing, grats.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! 🙏🏽 I have been wondering about this! Basically the music industry is a big ass scam! No wonder why artists are claiming not seeing the money and the meaning behind “selling their soul!”
It’s hard to invest when you got to pay people to constantly make content do that you can stay relevant. That’s why most rappers become rich after they’ve fallen off a little.
The rap industry is designed to promote popular artists so signing a contract is almost a must to become a successful artist. That’s why many rappers cave once their careers start to fall off. It’s either sell your soul or work at McDonald’s.
Incorrect, artists cave because they get it and realize its not what they wanted. Most just want the financial freedom not doing the homework behind it. Also some are artists and others arent. Some just want a check and others take pride in creating musical art because its their passion. But i see where you coming from, the industry is designed to promote negative narratives/ connotations, because negative attention gets maximized and positive attention gets minimized. Nowadays its easier the independent route, but social media conflicts most perception on reality so they do irrational impulsive decisions, thinking their going to get where the favorite artist is; not knowing the work they have to put in to get there. Long story short people got lazy.
@@PoeticallyGifted yeah I agree I was referring to the rap culture of getting tattoos everywhere including your face. That type of environment discourages a regular job which is good and bad. But it makes it easier for them to control you since you can’t get many other jobs with those tattoos that pays the same. They know you’ll have no choice but to sell out once your in deep. Especially rappers that didn’t finish high school or college. It becomes their only way out.
This video is so educational in the sense of knowing what is coming with the industry perks !!! What many people don't realize is that the Rich wealthy powered look is for outsiders to buy in to what the artist is doing !!
You could have a distribution deal and own ur master’s drop when u want to and as an artist ur label is supposed to pay for all fees including studio time, features, and producer advance that’s why it’s good to have an lawyer and know bout the game and read ur contract!
I read a website page years ago that explained that before Rihanna made money from her songs Roc Nation took any money that was owed to them via studio costs, producer costs and other costs first. The person behind this video knows what they are talking about.
Brother, these are words every artist needs to hear before they sign anything, or any agreement. One point I would add is that an artist should have an attorney before even entering into any conversation with a label. Someone recommended by someone outside of the label or production company. So that the deal can be fully vetted and explained to them before they proceed with signing and so that they have more leverage. Even as a new artist you can approach the music business and build your own brand in these times. Blessings and thanks for spreading the information and truth. This should be taught 101 to any aspiring artist.
Just want to say thank you for giving us game on the fundementals of how a record label operates. Honestly I feel like the only benefit to a record label is to build credibility but not to profit from. I've always had a theory that most artist that we know today might have did something like the idea I mentioned. Use the label to build a brand and learn how everything is operated then become independent to make the big bucks. The only thing that sucks is that for most good artist their best tracks come from the rise when they're putting themselves out there to be discovered but after they leave the label keeps the masters to their best songs that can potentially have an artist set for life if they had them.
Any artist who is serious will work diligently and manage funds while under a record deal. Make sure he is owing no money so he can leave and become independent. Then he'll make all the money off the foundation the label has built for him.
I’m planning on making my first song soon and all I can say is if I ever get the chance I’d never sign to a record label I know 2 people who have turned millions down don’t trust the industry 💯💯
Facts. I would do the same, but negotiate my own terms just to get the benefit of distribution that labels provide greatly. Other than that, I wouldnt want the millions in advance..
Copyright all your music, lyrics, and physical/likeness, and control your domains....and form LLC's for each entity listed above. Invest in a home studio, and own your own equipment..make sure each member of your team is able to contribute, through engineering, making beats, writing lyrics, marketing, security, publicist, hell even cutting hair etc. Lastly learn the difference between being Public VS Private. Own nothing but control everything.
This is why you build your own team and don’t rely on people in the industry to hold your hand and baby you. You do that by starting off small and making friends with other upcoming producers and etc. Both Doja and Nicki did the same thing.
Lmaooo Doja was literally signed to RCA in 2018 the year she blew up with moo, she had a whole team building her up and branding her whole time she been a puppet from the start
Sweetie…Doja began her music career back in 2012. I’m talking about earlier in her career when she was still traveling in the underground and quite successful on SoundCloud. She was not a “puppet” from the start. She was a talented quirky girl who loved lofi, anime, dancing, and girly aesthetics.
9:43 I heard that record lables coerce artists to use designated producers and studios so the money essentially goes back to them. Many artists try to use cheaper producers and studios but the labels won't let them
Yeah, if you want to remain out of the mainstream. Unless you're the classic definition of a hipster, your favorite artist is signed to a deal whether it's record or distribution.
You should also do a video on how these record labels take out life insurance policies on these artists. I remember bushwick bill had to sue his record label and surprisingly won.
You wanna truly be independent, learn the business for yourself and put together a team. Do rely on record labels. There’s easier platforms to distribute your music
Thanks for the info, at the end of the day its okay to sign to a label, you just need to make sure you completely understand what your signing up for. And put your foot down so u dont sign a 360 if you dont want that.
Reminds me of the 2Pac and Suge scene at the end when Pac wanted to leave Deathrow........ Suge had him coming and going pegged to the right. Dre was the smart one!
Dre was a sucker and Eazy-E got him, he paid like 20% of whatever he earned to E, and he set up E to try get E to break the deal, with a gun to his head E did it, but he used a false signature lol, so it didn't count. So it's all a bit sus that he "died of aids" soon after..
If a label comes at you with a fat advance, understand you can be making that amount already without them! That's why they're putting up that figure to advance you. Especially now a days with fat checks from music licensing deals and the tools of social media, the independent artist game needs to be respected. Dont sign your publishing away over a crap advance.
One major correction. All recouping is done from the artists percentage, not off the top. So that 2 million is paid back through that artists 8% not the whole amount. The label keeps that 92% its how they keep an artist in debt and still make money

How about not sign to a record label at all and pay for the marketing and publishing yourself to establish your own fan base then use your fan base to also start a record label where you will sign and promote other artists. Rather play the game than be a character in the game that is getting played
How will they obtain that money , if their family is not rich?
But once they're dropped by the label is when you see the artist's real worth.
every upcoming artist need to hear this . best advice I heard by far 💯
I learned this 15-20 years ago and the grime keeps getting repeated. It’s best to create your own, but that’s impossible because you NEED connections. Therefore, play at your own risk!
Bro I been in this over 10 years and you're correct this is how the industry works on the backend for alot of artists.

Exactly. Like I told my one rapper friend (won't mention his name), an advance isn't JUST an advance. It's an advance Loan. No one is just going give you "free money."
One thing we learned; if you're very popular and get millions of views/plays even without a deal, the label needs/wants you more than you needing them. You can take advantage of that. Like he did. He asked for a lot less of an advance, and asked if they could also help him start a record label. The rap industry is designed to promote popular artists so signing a contract is almost a must to become a successful artist. That’s why many rappers cave once their careers start to fall off. It’s either sell your soul or work at McDonald’s.
Incorrect
@@dareonallen9574 you just say incorrect without giving any argument as to why not
Incorrect, artists cave because they get it and realize its not what they wanted.
He isn't lying about the selling your soul part.

This is the best observation I’ve seen of the record labels not conspiracy based
Brother, these are words every artist needs to hear before they sign anything, or any agreement.

Thanks a lot, this made me realize I was wrong about a lot of things on a record deal ❤️🙏
This is FACTS. & thats why im independent and own my masters to my music. I invested way too much to get in debt with 1 of these labels.
Why so
Who and who please
Good luck, hope you make it
Copyright all your music, lyrics, and physical/likeness, and control your domains....and form LLC's for each entity listed above.
Nicki signed with Young Money
Lmaooo Doja was literally signed to RCA in 2018 the year she blew up with moo, she had a whole team building her up and branding her whole time she been a puppet from the start
Sweetie…Doja began her music career back in 2012. I’m talking about earlier in her career when she was still traveling in the underground and quite successful on SoundCloud. She was not a “puppet” from the start. She was a talented quirky girl who loved lofi, anime, dancing, and girly aesthetics.
9:43 I heard that record lables coerce artists to use designated producers and studios so the money essentially goes back to them. Many artists try to use cheaper producers and studios but the labels won't let them
You don’t need labels company anymore..,with TH-cam and social media your good these days
The deal is you need listeners to get record deals but once you have enough listeners, you don't really need record deals.
Listeners viewers
You need sales thats the key sales
Streaming physical sales downloads
Sales. Jb.ok
And enough money saved up to consistently travel and tour.
That’s not really true. Record label can invest you and have connections that normal people don’t snd can really help you grow
Keep going with your vision of this channel! You are doing gods work by educating folks abt this stuff when otherwise they’d never know 👏👏👏👏
