    The clues standing out to me are loss of coolant, burnt oil smell, and that whine noise when you were revving. Many turbos have coolant and oil lines to them . As you where standing beside the running engine is was noisy. So I am also wondering about the 2 stage oil pressure switch code that was dismissed. That code can set when the vehicle is a quart or more low on oil. So there maybe mechanical damage to the phasers now. I would also verify oil pressure is operating correctly on the 2 stage system. Lots of items for Ivan to sort through.....I can't wait! Hopefully it will be a 3 or 4 parts series.

    I'm going to take a guess, because wild ass guesses are fun! That oil consumption is what's going to be throwing the trims off, and that's why it's intermittent/unpredictable, and that's why there's no 2 gallon puddle of oil under it.

  • @jnails733
    @jnails733 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    I would check the turbos for oil streaks to the intake. When turbos go bad they'll consume oil rapidly

  • @boba764
    @boba764 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    80s Cadillacs would do something similar when the intake would start leaking. The intake rail were under the valve covers so they might go lean, they might suck oil and coolant would end up in the oil. A reasonably consistent way to prove the internal vacuum leak was to remove pcv valve put a vacuum gauge in the hole in the valve cover, block the vent hole on the other one and start the engine. If crankcase went into a vacuum, it was confirmed. Lean codes almost always were involved.

    Lots of good advice. Agreed, on vacuum leak at plenum, stock o2 ?, I'm in no position to advise Ivan the Great, the slight loss of coolant may be a clue. Being down 2 quarts of oil ( had to be qts.) On such a large capacity isn't much. My son had a c63 normally aspirated AMG. On the burnt oil smell, these particular motors usually develop oil leaks around 100k on the breather covers which reside on top of the valve covers toward the back. The oil seeps down to the exhaust manifold so after the car warms up, burnt oil smell. I usually do stuff like this myself but decided to have mercedes do it this time. They actually encountered issues with getting all the vac lines in the back reconnected properly and cracked the intake Y which they had to hunt down and buy on their dime. So I think it was a good call on dodging pita. Cant remember for sure, but I believe it ended up costing me about $650. Side note, I asked about the spark plugs, $1200 even though alot of the work would have been related. Will be doing those myself. 16 spark plugs on these..

The oil consumption isn't a problem at 2 qrts but at 2 gallons i would be looking for fouled plugs( you may be wasting your time). Also a smoke test for vacuum leaks when the engine is stone cold as intake leaks can disappear after slight warm up. Good luck Ivan😊

    Sounds like the sensor wires are crossed. Not sure if that can be done on this car but it used to happen on bmw v12s a lot after someone had changed the sensors and not marked the loom for each one.

    First thought the O2 sensors looks a bit lazy, perhaps not OEM.
    Think that you should check the injectors, slightly stuck open.
    Or leaky flexpipes to the exhaustpipes

    Fantastic tutorial ! Excellent teaching techniques !! Thanks so much Ivan ! I have to give you special commendation for the detail / precision in your coaching cues - the way you verbally state your actions and thought process - as I can track along with you and learn while periodically listening only AND because I am learning how to use the very same scan tool . As you announce every press of the buttons (options) on the screen it becomes clear to me how I am to get the most out of the Thinktool ProS . The unit did not come with instructions but no problemo when you are able to make it so easy to use !! 👊🏼 🔥 📈 🎯 .

    The smell of burning oil is usually burning oil. There is a small oil leak making its way to an exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold turbo feed, and being that this is a twin turbo there is oil pressure lubricating the turbo bearings? More places to leak.
    The engine is running lean. Manifold gasket leak? Not sure, because this is a twin turbo, I would have to know how the engine (intake) is designed to know. Perhaps look at both banks manifold pressure (2 sensors + pico scope) if separate, but you would have to have two electronic pressure transducers.

Smoke tested, replaced with oem MAF, PCV valve, injector cleaner fluid, o2 sensors reading fine, no exhaust leaks, fuel pressure good.. nothing. Looking forward to seeing what fixes this BENZ.

    Have to presume the feedback side is ok for now since the front sensors seem to agree with the rear (unless you happen to have a gas anylizer). You said its speed density? We need to see if it's lean from too much air, or not enough fuel. Can you see commanded vs actual fuel pressure? How about calculated load? On a fancy rocketship like that, there's real possibility of too much air flow from what Bernie would call, hot rod bullxxxx. 😊
