- Let's see if we can make heads or tails out of the weird P2097 and P2099 codes on this 2012 Mercedes S550 AMG Twin-Turbo V8.
Customer also says the Washer and Radio don't work...
Looks like this Benz has a long history of problems!

AMG all money gone 😂
Nothing in that car tells me it's an AMG. It's just a standard S550.

😂Now,he can trading in that water flooded BMW moneys pit into the dealer. He getting, what he can getting in $.Now🎉😊buying a Lexus less headaches and can lasting a 1000 times longer.
That's an expensive fishbowl
But the amg black series is a reliable beast..soo.nice
Saw the mold in the first video while you were test driving it, but didn’t put 2 and 2 together. Thanks for you videos!!
As soon as you said the radio wasn't working. I was screaming. Check the trunk for water lol. They actually have a bypass for the most system. It's basically a connector that you can bypass the fiber optic ring. I forget how much it was but it was like five bucks or something like that at the Mercedes dealer. I've had to do this a bunch of times mainly on S430 S500 2002 years, I had one where the CD changer was in the back on the left side. That was completely covered in water lol. I had to pull the body drain plug out to get all the water out. That one gotta bypass as well lol
Youd have to add an aftermarket amplifier then in order to power the speakers. The head unit up front is just a controller, with no built in amplification
Why so much lol??
Been there done that with a 2000 CL500 . The L/R quarter was a swimming pool. I replaced with a used amp, and did the Fiber Optic bypass for the phone unit? Now the radio is operational.
Air hammer! I've been wondering wtf you did to that thumb. Every time it flashes across the screen, it makes my thumb hurt. XD
Ethanol is your friend in turbo charged cars. It cools combustion and helps control detonation. In fact E85 (85% ethanol ) is cheap race gas for tuned turbo cars.
Thanks!
I’m going to be like you when I grow up lol
Now you got an idea what we experience in Brazil.. Our regular gas is 27.5% ethanol, and there is a proposal to raise it to 35% !! Premium gas is "only" E25. Most imports have to be recalibrated.
They are killing everything any way they can to force their egenda these vehicles were never designed to run on a fuel made like that.
And that's when we find honest gas at 27%
That is incredible.
@@kevincampbell8298 My cars built in 90-2000's are calibrated to E20-E22. Hope it will not throw lean codes. With the majority of fleet being flex fuel, they don't give a sh* for gas-only vehicles.
Just get a Tesla.
Weird AL cd , Ivans quote " Doesn't want to EAT IT " . lmao that one almost slipped by , good one Ivan . lol
The fuel! Damn it. Lol. I just went through this yesterday. Our apprentice had me helping him out on a 2020 F150. After reviewing all the data with him. I concluded the alcohol content was too high in the fuel. And thus was causing the P0171 and P0174 codes. Ok time to continue watching.
If there is an open ring on the MOST network, usually the serial data goes from device 1 to the last device and if the next device on the ring doesn't talk then the last device will report an open ring. You can jump the ring network out and it should pass communication through the ring. I've seen this on GM's where the cd player would burn up and cause a open ring and device 2 which is usually the radio amplifier will report it being it was the last device on the network that was communicating. This is easy for the manufacturer to add and remove options pertaining to the infotainment system.
Damn, we didn't hear AMISH PARADISE being played in an S class Benz. Lols.
Poodle Hat is no longer valuable?!!!! I just bought it on eBay!

he ivan, as i stated in part 1. gdi's are super picky about what gasoline you put in them. 1 or 2 tanks is nothing to worrie about. but all the time gives you a money light and powerloss, shivers, bad idling...etc etc. your the man😎
Crazy how many people said ,smoke test it, on a Map based system. Excellent work as always PH!
Yup vacuum leak on a MAP engine just makes it idle faster, doesn't affect fuel trims 😁👍
Brother, I am a South African loving the things you do and the advice you give. To the owner of the car, you should understand if you sell a car knowing it is not 100% tell the next owner the story even when you trade it in. You might not get as much for the deal but your soul will be clean and your next purchase will be a blessed deal. I have lived long enough to give witness to this and have personal experience. Others have done the opposite and things are still not going well for them. It is just money do not put a price on your soul and your integrity. The next guy will have no problem repairing and keeping this vehicle on the road. These things turn into priceless items. Scotty is right about some things but a little warped on others. You can never compare a Toyota to a German-built Mercedes, because the only thing is that they both have four wheels.
The next guy deserves all that he gets for buying a used money pit like a clueless idiot just like the current owner.
Thanks Ivan for sharing your thought processes and logical steps to take to solve the fuel trims causing the “money light” issue. Great computer diagnostics with reset capabilities along with experience to conclude gasoline octane issues was super! Water intrusion in the trunk will devalue trade-in for sure. Cheers from Tokyo.
Thanks for doing this video. I learned another way to spot a used flood vehicle for sale that had not occurred to me, look at the extended seat belt. Very cool, and very fast. For MB flood vehicles if you look at the steel frame under the drivers seat (use a small round mirror and a bright flash light) for a flood vehicle you should see rust, which is a good check because you know the water has at least flooded up to the bottom of the seat. But, if the seat belt is moldy, game over.
ivan i watch all your videos its my first time to comment. your showing me and all the viewers that its very importing to use the reserch the wiring diagrams ita a must have.fair play to you. i watch a lot of TH-cam car diagnostic video and nearly all them never show wiring diagrams. which i love. thank for showing behind the scenes of how electronic engineers go about tracing down problems. your one of a kind. so many people can learn from you because i did. Fantastic work ivan
The COMAND system can be a nightmare - it functions as a gateway, includes fiber optic lines, does a circuit Delta check every start. If anything is at fault the entire system can shut down. Difficult to diagnose.
But compare to the network systems on even a base 2024 vehicle - they all suck. Too much complexity.
and that complexity is unnecessary
bonus footage. and here is the car floating past a flooded gas station in Miami on the local news....
At least it didn't eat your CD. Weird Al hates when that happens.
Never had a turbo. took an online mechanic test, and most of the questions were about the sound turbo make when failing. How you are supposed to recognize a sound from typed questions didn't help. My idea if a squeal, and their typists are probably different.
That's pretty sophisticated. And finicky! My hat's off to you for taking this one on!
Ivan, I had similar situation back in 2017 on a 1999 Toyota Sienna after valve cover gasket replacement (both banks extremely lean under all driving conditions). I spent days verifying my work and function of all components - no issues found. Then I realized that I filled up gas from a place I generally avoid. It turned out once we filled up gas from the regular place we go to and driving for a while, the lean conditions went away.
Is that the Weird Al, Poodle Hat CD? Some pretty good songs on there. Great job Ivan as always
Question: What hurts more? Air Hammer on a thumb or 2012 S550 on your wallet?
Professional job yet again Ive! Onya mate!
I noticed that mold on the seatbelt when you took it out on the first test drive. I was wondering if it was a flood victim. Im surprised that there aren't more modules offline.
Had same thing happen to my '20 Subaru WRX after I filled up at the Indian reservation on Long Island.
After a couple tanks from Shell and Mobil the lean codes went away.
Wow ---sweet find Ivan-- Who would have guessed cheap gas ? I did guess turbo seals though, which is like the easy button guess for a Benz with 100K on the clock
A few years back I was active doing LPG conversions, never did a Mercedes but from contacts on the LPG forums heard Mercedes engine computers could totally screw up the fuel trims during the initial setting up of the LPG computer. In those days it meant a return to the dealer
Cars are becoming disposable, but if the customer wants to repair it, they have to pay the price of another one to get it fixed. Usually the high priced vehicles are not to be used by a second or third owners. Take pride on what you do good job!
Another brilliant diagnostic.
Thanks for the video Ivan.
Ivan, Here is the process to check Alcohol in the fuel content. Here are some steps for testing the alcohol content of gasoline using a graduated cylinder:
Put on gloves and safety glasses
Have a fire extinguisher nearby
Fill a 100 mL graduated cylinder to the 10 mL mark with water
Carefully add gasoline to fill the rest of the cylinder
Shake the cylinder vigorously for about a minute
Place the cylinder in a safe place to let the water and alcohol settle
Divide the increase in water level by the fuel sample volume
Multiply the result by 100% to get the percentage of alcohol in the fuel . I would also reset the fuel trims. And there should be a Alcohol PID showing what the PCM is thinking is the Content percentage.
I learned early on to write these off whenever possible. The opportunities for callbacks are infinite. Getting these cars into salvage and and branded is imperative.
Why don't they ever steal these and ship then to brazil?
I wonder if there was any sort of law, be it a tort or criminal, that was violated by not doing so in this specimen's case? This turkey should not be on the road at all.
Erik O at South Main had a car that was not reading the % ethanol correctly. The car was thinking it had lots of ethanol, and was adjust the fuel trim rich to account for the necessary lower air / fuel ratio . If I recall pure ethanol has to be about 9 to 1, E85 % I think is 9.7 to 1 . This is significantly different than 14.7 to 1 for non ethanol. Erik was able to see on his scanner what the computer was using in the calculations, and it was acting as if it was E85. All he did was reset something while in diagnostic mode.
The Harmon Kardon amps are known to fail on these (option code 810). MOST is a fiber optic ring network. Option code 811 was the high end B&O system.
When Ivan gets S class to fix.
Let's test drive it :D
Need to fill up with Premium gas. The best gas is forty miles away. Really? Well, gotta be done.
Ok we need to test drive with other tires these ones are winter tires 😂
I'm not used to ethanol laced gasoline so, I didn't see that coming 🙂 Impressive how detrimental it is for the engine performance. Great job spotting it, Ivan!
Those windshield wiper pumps start leaking after some time and corrode the electric motor. I'd bet the cost of a new sound system will surpass the cost of the turbos.
Dump the factory outdated garbage and do a nice Alpine or Kenwood Excelon with Car Play or Android Auto and be done with the crappy MOST system
@@melissathompson7229 Yep, that would sort it, but I'm not sure it would fully integrate with the car's network.
Most Rutter's and some Sheetz locations in central PA have E0 gas. So glad to have them. I hope people keep buying it so they keep selling it!
When a car has 50 computers and flooded, it's game over 😂
I bet if you don't change the other 49 they will beat up the new one and break it.
@@robertsmith2956 50 computers is a financial accident just waiting to happen
that sticker on every gas pump says that the state dept of weight and measures came around, tested the volume and octane dispensed and found them to be consistent with the labeling.
Maryland sells 15 percent ethanol. Most cars don't live more than 10 percent ethanol.
they cut the sh*t out of your gas
We have 2 gas stations by me here in Buffalo that sell ethanol free 90 octane. That's all I use in my snow blowers. lawn mowers and Honda Prelude.😊
@@ap101081 we have one station in my area of western Pennsylvania that sells ethanol free gas and they charge a premium for it, over $7 a gallon when regular is $3.60 a gallon. I opt to use fuel stabilizer in all of my power equipment, it goes into every gas can and all tanks are kept topped up. Stabilizers work by sealing the fuel from oxygen thereby stopping corrosion and fuel degradation. The less oxygen in the tank the better.
Still though 20% is worrying for the fuel trim that is way too high there's something else underlying going on
The fixes are great but the best part of the video was Ivan finally telling us what happened to his thumb!
in my last 3 cars I 've employed those wardrobe moisture bead things from the supermarket
We call it RICE in the south. 😅😅😂
about 400 lbs should fill the trunk.
Fun fact: ethanol has been in the fuel since 1979 in most states.
As much as i like ethanol free fuel, I’m hesitant to buy it from most of the mom and pop places that sell it. I’m a big believer in only buying gas at high volume places like truck stops or Sheetz. I would buy ethanol free from Buckees if one was nearby.
I was wondering about your thumbnail. I thought you were bored with a Sharpie. Thanks for clearing that up. I've been there with the thumb hammering. Keep up the great vids.
Top Tier gasoline for the win. Nice ride.
I remember seeing mold on the seat belt during your first test drive.
Some interesting info on fuel distribution: In any giving area, most of it, regardless of brand is coming from one regional distribution terminal. The refineries themselves are shipping 87 and 91, and their output all gets put in a pipeline and mixed with every other brands. So how are we getting 93? That's where the ethanol comes in. The Ethanol, and any brand specific detergents or additives, are added at the distribution terminal, at time of truck loading. They pull the trucks up under the rack with the ethanol and/or additives and it splash mixes enroute. 91, where it's available simply omits the ethanol addition.
Now, here's the thing. some scummy gas stations/chains or fuel supplies will 'double dip' under the ethanol rack, and try to sneak in 20%. Why? Because the ethanol is cheaper than gasoline. Had a friend who got a 20% ethanol mix being sold as 10% from a discount chain, and it made the vehicle throw a P0420 for Cat. Efficiency. post-Cat. o2 sensor was seeing too much oxygen still, from the 20% ethanol, making it think the Cat. wasn't doing it's job. Code went away and never returned after getting good gasoline.
Good info.
I was/still considering a 2015 (or newer) S550, not necessarily AMG, but definitely AWD. I've looked at several from Carvana & Carmax. They do ride nice, have exceptional power & amenities. BUT for how long 🤷♂ They're all priced around $35-$50k+ with most
But the darn thing is fast !
That's what matters !
Son had one. Told him to sell it asap before it karked itself in yet another expensive manner. These are like boats - 2 happiest days are the day you buy it & the day you manage to sell it to some other poor sod after it breaks your wallet.
These european cars with Bosch internals run happily with 20% ethanol. We dont know what was in the tank, but this car should run on any liquid coming out of fuel pump. Anyway, love your videos Ivan, been watching you for years and i have learned so much from you. I even got picoscope few years ago. Just 2 channel but it has been a bless.
Great job 👍
I'll stick to my f600 1961 winch truck 😁
Since Sheetz shouldered their way into my area, I use that fuel for all my small engine needs. I'm not a fan of how they shoe horn stations in places they don't fit, but the fuel is consistent.
Salute Ivan its Saiful the 9-3 Aero DRIVING fantastic just wanted to let you know. NO AMG FOR ME , SAAB ON FOLKS!!!
Yes, you are correct, this MB is most definitely a swimmer.
I saw the mold on the seatbelt in the first video I was wondering if that was going to come into play
I personally will take our 30-year-old Mercurys over this car any day. Seems like I recall a car you and Keith Perkins was working on and in the background Keith DeFazio was saying it wasn't worth trying anything on because it was a flood car. Seems like you learned your lesson. GREAT VIDEO!
oil can get into the ECU from the wire loom from camshaft sensors and adjusters gives ghost oxygen faults
Oh boy, that certainly looks like endless money pit. Coincidentally found today maybe the perfect opposite of money pit, a scale model of 1994 Toyota Celica, haha :D
Beautiful car, awesome 🏁
A friend of mine swears by these cars, but this video, along with many others, has taught me to stay far, far away from them.
Im from Maryland. Royal farms isnt a discount place. There a really good place to get fuel. Just as good as wawa. And around here royal farms is like sheets in pa.
That car is out of Float Lauderdale!....thx for the vid.
I undertstand usually a fuel trim code wont set rich or lean til typically 25% either way, but seeing it at 20% which is getting towards max isnt still concerning? Typically i like to see them staying around + or - 12% long term...
Ivan I'm sure the ethanol free thing would be an advantage to that vehicle but in most parts of the country and especially in major cities there is no ethanol free gas available at all..
I wish it was and I've tried because here in Houston my 1967 big block Galaxie doesn't like that ethanol on a hot day...
Should we have checked for a dirty throttle body and/or air filter for that lean condition?
Geebus they need to just install ethanol sensors in everything already. Problem solved, plus more torque for boosted engines at high enough ethanol content.
Personally I only run Ethanol free Gasoline, Better I have way less Little Stupid problems now, But of course I have to because I didn't install a thick enough headgasket on a 1.7L 05 civic, Runs great with good GAS no CEL , No pinging-missfires at idle, With Ethanol it's a Shitshow. Great Content 🇺🇸👍
That car is definitely not worth repairing. I hope the owner gets rid of it as fast as possible. Nice video.
How was the flooding up that way? Closed quite a few schools and roads down here.
Finally test drove that tdi golf with the aftermarket headlights unplugged. Drove it an hour without it going into limp mode. Before it would go into limp mode within 2-3 miles and very repetable.
That's why I bought a Holden in Australia since the Chevy V8 engines that they bolted in are a lot cheaper to fix than the Mercedes-Benz AMG or BMW cars meaning that if you wanted to buy a 4 door sedan which actually has performance but are absolute money pits & the latest BMW which runs the twin turbocharged 4.4 litre V8 engine is an oil guzzler which is prone to catching on fire since both of the turbochargers are counted on top of the engine, they just get very hot.
I know that Daves Auto centre is rebuilding a Mercedes AMG engine which a Mercedes Benz dealer fitted with a new lower crankshaft bearing cradle because it was smashed up in a car accident,it is really meant to be purchased with the engine block since they're machined together as a matching set at the factory.
What happened is that the crankshaft seized up in the main bearing journals & he has to repair the crankshaft which is also cracked on the rear main bearing journal..
The dilemma is a whole new engine costs $65,000 USD from Mercedes Benz & he cannot source Just the engine block too easily because if he did the $18,000 USD engine block will be backordered because they have to actually manufacture an engine block for it in Germany.
He cannot just get another used AMG engine because the person whose the Mercedes Benz specialist has used engines which are all junk as well.
The dilemma that Dave has is with line boring & honing the 2 dissimilar halves because the bearing housings where the bearings sit is steel whereas the bottom half is a softer alloy steel.
I so much want Holden to come back to Australia,I don't see GM exporting the Cadillac CT5 to Australia in right hand drive form, they have been slack ever since 2017 when they stopped making Holdens in Australia, not the imported German built Opel Insignia that was rebadged as the Holden Commodore, that's not what I meant !
In the 80's we had a soldier on base with a jag. I was at the auto shop and he was working on the v8 chevy engine under the hood. Said it is much cheaper with that engine in the car.
I use to own a Pontiac G8. I miss that car. My original plans were to buy the kit to make the LS3 powerplant supercharged, but I totalled it out with only 18K on the clock.
@@topher8634 I hadn't thought of it. Are the wrapping the car around the engine so tight so you can't put a different engine in the car?
that's called a Hot V engine in the BMW. Induction is fed in from the outside of the V where the exhaust would normally be.
@@robertsmith2956 I'm sure you could. They offered 3 engines for it. Other LS series or LT series would probably work with little or no modifications. LT4 supercharged would've been cool.
Would a oil catch can help? It really made a difference on my 3.5 twin turbo F150
Last April we had a huge flood in Ft Lauderdale, FL cars were stranded in flood waters on the roads for days - Mercedes of Fort Lauderdale license plate frame in the trunk is huge clue.
25:15 I noticed that moldy belt in the first video, reminded me of a car I had where the sunroof started leaking at some point while it was parked for months. Next time I opened it up it had morphed into a Moldsmobile 🤢 you're right to run far away from this thing, who knows how many modules it has that are either fried or soon to be fried.
It's possible this car was never flooded and the mold's just from the trunk leaking while it sat around sealed up in Florida heat, but of course the trunk's full of electronics so that's still not a good situation.
Thanks Ivan!
Just read the Manual for 550 AMG
Premium fuel only.
Lower grade causes problems with cat and sensors.
Quality fuel is a major problem all over the world.
Major Petrol stations in Philippines, high grade fuel excessive water content.
In the UK we get a lot of condensation in fuel tanks. Another problem.
But owner should have known about quality grade fuel.
I was wondering about the mechanics thumb in last few vids, air hammer... not just one hit, bpms nice!
Supposed to be E10 max, but smaller stations and chains buy their fuel from whomever, so 1 never knows what they're pumping. Years ago we had a slew of cars and vans that wouldn't start after a extreme cold snap overnight. Turns out the station mixed E85 in their reg no lead 87 tank. Point is, good known fuel is key. Imagine the rabbit hole you could've fallen into with smoke machines, swapping o2s, injector balance tests etc, just for poor fuel.
Needs oem o2 sensors before further diagnosis.
On a Hyundai, Oil was always good then one day the turbo sucked all my oil out at 70K miles. Replaced the turbo and the oil, but too late the engine failed at 74K. Crazy thing is these engine have no oil pressure sensors. I think you have to add an aftermarket pressure sensor on the E55 Amg as well. I don't understand why they aren't part of the original design and why oil level low doesn't trigger until the sump is sucking air.
I use ethanol free but every once in a while I use Seafoam in the fuel tank to smooth out the idle. The ethanol free gas gives more power and fuel economy so you're not really saving much by using ethanol gas. If it's from Florida you'll see aluminum surface corrosion on the aluminum parts
Here, ethanol-free fuel runs about 30 cents more per gallon
I still wouldn't consider the fuel trims "fixed"... They are still adding 20% fuel for some reason. Maybe the injectors are a bit clogged or something. But since it's not throwing codes about it --- it's time to ship it. ;) I agree with you about it being a flood car. The mold on the seatbelt is the d3ad giveaway. it's the kind of car that you could hotrod around and run it into the ground if you get it for cheap. But if you're paying full price for this thing-- you're getting hosed. Maybe he can trade it in and let it be the dealers problem.
Ivan only topped off the tank. It isn't a FULL TANK of the good stuff ;-)
Ivan, what are your thoughts on a F250 Diesel with sometimes starts and runs sometimes no start. Two shops have shot the parts cannon at it. New complete wiring harness, ecm and a high pressure fuel pump. Still not running. Can you help, I've been amazed with your diag and score for repairs.
change radio fluid every 100KM as per MB service manual.
Hello what is the things that make you to change the fuel thank you
That is incredible. The fuel. Everybody makes more money if they dilute it. I dont buy generic no name gas anymore. I am reluctants to use the 2-W's gasoline. Mercedes were once the envy of the world . so many problems. Rust and water in trunk.
The customer can mount the car on hydraulics base with wide screen monitors and pretend the car is moving . Still cheaper than trying to repair this rock .
Doesn't the owner's manual specify the preferred fuel?
Can you also tell us how much you charge after your work
I wonder what brand o2 sensors they used?
Hey Ivan. Have you ever done a turbo cartridge replacement? It's a far cheaper option than replacing the entire unit.
I wonder what the owner's manual says about fuel requirements?
Diesel when turbo starts to suck oil they go wide open in throttle and can't be turn off they keep running wide open do gas powered cars with turbo have the same problem I seen a video a guy used a fire extinguisher to shut it down he blew it into the intake
BTW: Water in fuel in my Dodge 5.9 Magnum: No OBD2 errors, drive around with 'Torque' Android app, saw strange O2 readings, installed new NTK sensor, fixed it - for a short time. SeaFoam - no help. Two pints of 99% isopropyl - FIXED.
A lot of companies, like General Motors recommend only use fuel from what is called Top Tier rated fuel stations. This is usually the major brands and not the super cheap stations.
can you remove the turbo and drive without it?
Hard to find that type gas in md
