  • THE DEER HUNTER Movie Reaction (100 Movie Bucket List - #9)
The Deer Hunter is a 1978 American epic war drama film co-written and directed by Michael Cimino. It is a film starring the trio of Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage as they the three have their live turned upside-down by the Vietnam War.
I felt this movie had a very unique way of showing some of the trials of war. I felt it used situations that have not been typical in most war movies I've seen. I mostly appreciated the acting and fundamental filmmaking aspects of it. Although, it ran a bit long in some parts for me, I understand why it was made this way and I feel like I learned more about filmmaking from watching it.
Hope you enjoyed the reaction! Until next time!

Masterpiece of a film, Imo De Niro's top acting here, Meryl Streep too did an awesome job with her character, and you cant go wrong with Chris Walken
This is a mlvie I watch from time to time, the complexity of Mike's character is a puzzle but with time you get to understand his actions, pretty sad there are no more movies like tvis anymore

Great reaction, man, and an even better choice of film to react. Subbed! Keep it grinding as I can't wait to see more. My dad's favorite film was The Deer Hunter and he had me watch this crazy flick when I was like 8-years-old lol. Now I feel like I went through the war with that experience but it was way worthwhile since I appreciate my parents putting me onto great films since I was a little as now I work in the industry. Anyway, like I said, keep it pushing and your commentary was real deal and it's exciting to see folks actually react to the first time to great films.
Edit: I have to say this but De Niro is the MAN in this flick. Not just his character but this is, in my opinion, his finest and most intense acting work of his career.

Unfortunately, many came back from Vietnam physically,
as well as mentally, changed. Men coming back affected
by Agent Orange, that was used there, and the Government
trying to tell them they had "pre-existing conditions" before
they went to war, etc. Unlike WWII, the service members weren't
seen as "returning heroes". They deserved so much better.

John Savage featured in several memorable films in addition to The Deer Hunter, including Do the Right Thing (1989), Hair (1979), Salvador (1986), and The Thin Red Line (1998). The Deer Hunter was John Cazale's last film. He passed away young. He was only in a few films, but there were all great films, including The Godfather (1972), The Conversation (1974), The Godfather Part II (1974), and Dog Day Afternoon (1975). I don't know what films are on your top 100 list, but if the list is decent you're sure to see him again and maybe Savage too along with DeNiro and Walken.

My friend happened to be wearing a shirt with John Cazale on it and happened to see Meryl Streep, of all people, walk by him here in the city. She stopped, pointed, and said, "That's my man" with a smile before going on her way. He tells that story every chance he gets because it's a great one.

He wasn't trying to hear his echo on the mountain at the end. Dear lord...
The mountain was Mike's church, in so many words. The music when he was hunting is a clue. He is the most serious off all his friends, and he is very serious about the hunt. It is a spiritual experience to him. Many hunters feel this way to some degree. Being one with nature. Having the strength and skill to BE your place in the natural order.
At the end, the music swells during the hunt as it did before, but Mike has changed. It is very open to interpretation, but I saw Mike pulling his shot at the last moment and saying "Okay?" "OKAY!" as him speaking to God or nature or the earth or whoever the mountain church belonged to. It had been growing in his mind about how much he had changed, and he was struggling and fighting it. But at the same time, he pulled away from his old life because he couldn't deny it wasn't the same for him anymore.
The final hunt was the tipping point. It was as if Life had been speaking to him, and he was trying to fight and ignore it, but in the final moment, he couldn't make the kill. I think he surrendered at that moment and spoke to the mountain or God or Life, saying "Okay?" as in "Is this what you want?", and then calling "OKAY!" as in "I understand now and I give in!". And I think he found peace within himself.
And then the next scene in the cabin shows how difficult it is for those who go through such changes to deal with those people in their old life who haven't gone through anything close to the same experiences. The audience can understand Mike's feelings and perhaps his actions here, but his friends will never understand. When Mike pulled the trigger with the gun to Stan's head, not only was it to teach them some of the lessons he had learned, but also to fill a need we all have as people to make ourselves be understood. It is very deep commentary on how people who experience brutal and life-changing trauma can lash out and commit similar acts.

Yeah, I saw it as him saying "ok" to life, because he had grown a respect for it. I don't think he had (as) much respect for it at the beginning, especially how they had the deer carcass slung messily over their car hood.
Thanks for the detailed comment 🙏🏾

@@theotothefuture I would only add to be careful with your wording about respect. With this movie, you might as well learn a bit more about hunting. I am not a hunter, but I have tried to understand their perspectives. And it is high on their pet peeves list to insinuate that not killing is inherently more evolved. I won't get into a long-winded debate, but I assure you, with serious hunters, respect for life is not an issue.
