and welcome back to Swift Guitar lessons for another by request song tutorial! In today's session I'm breaking down how to play The Beatles' 1965 classic "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away." This John Lennon original is the perfect addition to your beginner-intermediate repertoire - it features a single strumming pattern and a buskers style chord progression coupled with hammer-ons and walking transitions. Let's get started!

Mind boggling how the Beatles pumped out so many amazing songs
they didnt wasted time touring after it started killing them. they had 2, maybe 3 of the greatest songwriters and one hell of a drummer. they belonged in the studio and thats where they stayed.

@@stupidcarrot9921 Funny you should mention one hell of a drummer. I believe Paul is quoted as saying (you can still find it on You Tube) when a reporter asks him about how good Ringo is, is he the best drummer in the world - Paul laughs and says he not even the best drummer in the Beatles.... :-))))
@@ChrisChurton That is an urban myth. No Beatle ever said that. It was attributed to a stand up comedian called Jasper Carrot.
@@deanfaccini I agree with you. No band member will said that to another band member unless they are joking or, are going to replace him, just like what they did to Pete Best.

One thing I really like about your tutorials compared to others is you actually sing the song as you play. I would love to be able to sing the song and it helps with knowing the timing of when each bit is happening.
A good way of getting the timing is to whistle or hum the song to your playing, then slowly add the lyrics
Best lesson I’ve seen. No one else ever explains the strumming pattern, chord change and lyric timing properly. Awesome job.
WHY? Why doesn’t every TH-cam guitar lesson begin with a full demonstration? You are the first online coach I’ve seen do this and I literally ask this question every time.

I feel like he's the only one who has the right age and voice to be able to cover these songs .Not all guitar teachers (or players of the instrument for that matter) can necessarily sing or like to sing.I'm glad Rob Swift stands out in that way .Now for me to learn this song I'm not sure I know about.
I know this lesson has been out for a year, but I'm just catching it now. As someone who has seen the Beatles in concert and who has been an amateur guitar player since then, thank you for highlighting the nuances that made/make this music special. Well done lesson.

You absolutely nailed it. Played exactly like John played it. The pinky finger 3rd fret on most of the song is very important. Most people don't play it right. If you watch the movie you will see John playing it this way.

Beautiful singing and playing. I encourage you to try to listen to the vocal part more closely. The rhythm of the vocal needs to be exact. Hold each note exactly as long or short as John did it because this is what makes the waltz flow properly.
Sometimes he uses can sometimes he uses kin which is shorter than can. You know what I mean?
Sometimes he holds a note longer.
Try holding the note exactly as long as he does and I believe you will find it helps you to keep the waltz going in time.
Im only saying this because I know you can do it. And it does make a difference.
For example. The country artist who recently covered this song couldn't resist the Temptation of putting a little of himself in it and in my opinion it throws off the timing and the flow of the waltz. The Italian guy who does vocal lessons on how to sing Beatles songs does a video on this song that is very good.

Absolutely FAB. Thanks. But hey if your reading this I'm curious on the Dsus/C fingering. I learned to hit the C with my pinky so still covering the F# on the high E. Have I learned wrong?
That would be a D/C, which would work very well and might be what John actually plays. The chord forms I chose for that section are just a bit easier to perform and have a sound that I find to be more interesting.

Are you playing a Martin or a Taylor?
Anyone on here maybe able to tell me. So that f chord is kind of hard for me to go from regular to that f, so I was messing around and was doing the c add 9 for the c chord and I just moved my two fingers down to the next lower strings and noticed it sounded almost identical to that f chord, if I played just the middle 3 strings. Is that a real chord? Is it like some sort of diminished f or something?
