Hewing a Black Cherry Log. Part 1 Rough.

Part 1 - rough hewing. Part 2 will show the fine hewing for the 4x6 timber. About 1/3 of the log is rotten. The log is at least 2 years since being cut, but it's still pretty green. It is a little splintery, but I think even very green black cherry is that way. The Home Depot axe (5lb) was terrible for joggling. It had too much wedge I think. It wanted to angle inward to deeply. Also, it was a little heavy and the handle a little long for striking at odd angles. The Gransfors Bruk Small Forest axe (2lb) worked much better.

If you haven't got dogs, use a length of wood and screw it down. Makes life easier!
