Test Review 2022 Honda Africa Twins Episode 2

  • Andrew Clubb, Editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine (AAB) and Dave Darcy of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV and Editor at Large at AAB test two versions of the 2022 Honda Africa Twin.
    This is the second of a two part series and focusses on the Adventure Sport DCT ES series and its handling in the dirt and suitability of the DCT in the dirt.
    In the first part Dave focussed on testing the standard Africa Twin model and Clubby rode the top of the range Adventure Sport DCT ES. In this final and second part of the series Clubby and Dave swap bikes and describe their experiences.
    Dave decides which model he would buy and discusses where the Africa Twin sits in the highly competitive market of Mid Range and Super Tourer adventure bikes.
    This detailed review will focus on both bikes' suitability as adventure mounts for Australian conditions. A strong focus of the tests will be on dirt handling.
    The test has been broken into two parts due to poor weather conditions that has seen extensive flooding in the areas used for testing the bikes.

    Saturday, free from work, coffe, omelett, traufelchilli on the table, and by a missclick I ended up here. 2 of my favorit bikers having fun and entertaining us. Here my bikes are crawling further and further into the garage..hiding from the hell we call snow...up here in the land of Santa. Once again, you are truly blessed guys. Thx and keep it up :)

    Excellent review. I bought the 2022 adventure sport Dct earlier this year. I never thought I’d consider a Dct let alone purchase one. After 6 months of highway and trail riding - I love it! It is truly amazing. I have done many Baja trips in 250s and 450s and recently one with my africa twin - I’ve mastered using the back brake as the clutch - tight turns and maneuvering are a breeze now - it is truly amazing and don’t think I’d ever go back to manual. Also the Honda reliability is off the charts. I have only done oil and filter changes and changed the stock mezler tires to the Motoz Rallyz - this bike is a rock.

    Great review. Genuine comments on the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Love my AT, suits the Offroad challenges presented to it, which is 80% of all my Adventure Riding. Just a 220kg Dirt Bike that is comfortable.

    Im actually impressed by my Honda AT DCT Standard. For a rather big bike it’s really fuel efficient. At least on tarmac. On my so far 20.000 km tour through Europe it says 4,4 litres per 100km. For a 1100cc bike I think it’s good. So it’s made for long term travelling!

    Another great review! I really like how you took the time to dive into both bikes especially the DCT. Messing with the settings does become second nature with time. I have a '20 Std. DCT which I ride similarly here in the Arkansas Ozarks. I suspect that on the AS DCT the larger tank raises the center of gravity which will change the handling characteristics especially when full. The DCT weight is down lower and likely doesn't have as much impact on the handling. Honda has really figured out how to make a bike handle properly with a 21" front wheel as you can carve the twisties nicely. The DCT gives much more flexibility for how I ride vs. a dedicated manual. No regrets and would buy another without question.

    With that larger tank and the way the automatic works, the bike must get amazing fuel economy.

      Pretty good. Some are saying 4.4 litres per 100 ks. I didn't get near that, but we were riding them briskly.

    Gotta drag the rear brake at slow speed, still not a clutch, but it can do the same with some practice (2017 AT DCT here). Appreciate the videos and all the work you guys do. I would probably choose the manual for my next adv bike. It's a hard choice and that's great for the buyer!

      I just took a safety course but I’ve been riding a while. The instructors were teaching us to slip the clutch in the friction zone and never mentioned rear brakes, and people were dropping bikes left and right. when we talked amongst ourselves and reflected I suggested to my classmates to drag and feather the back brake along with working the clutch to balance and slow down a little and it helped them a lot

    Waiting for my Adventure Sport DCT ES. Love how the DCT uses the torque of the motor between 1800 rpm to 3k to just chug/crawl along at low RPM offroad and around town. I'm not the type of person who loves the high revvy motors you have to wind up like a chainsaw to enjoy. So this is perfect for me

    Just bought 2018 AT dct. Its amazing, although I had a hayabusa before. I dont think I'm heading to technical trails any time soon, but for asphalt road and dirt roads it feels solid on both. Slow maneuvering is easy, I didnt miss clutch at all after the first few turns. I've ridden on crotch rockets before this and I think I just found the right bike for me. DCT is in its element in town and cruising on small winding roads since I can just drive in a comfy position and feel the freedom, no need to shift gears. I turned it to s2 pretty quick. D shifts into 6 too soon and it feels like I'm driving a 125cc. And a bit sportier acceleration with s2 it tends to leave 3rd gear on and I can just flick it manually to 6 if I want. I really have no clue what else I would want for my next bike somewhere in the future. Also being quite short 175cm, I can reach my heels on the ground when I use the lower seat setting. Perfect bike, highly recommend trying it out.
    Edit: Also thought that when I was thinking is 95hp enough after having hayabusa with 197hp. It is enough. It does take off quickly enough. It just means I can keep my license if police sees me doing it.

    I‘ve got a standard 1100 AT with DCT and I absolutely love it. Onroad, offroad, track…I have done it all. This bike amazes me every day. Once you have owned an AT with DCT other bikes feel outdated. People are still prejudiced. Test one and you will love it. And yes, hard offroading is a blast with DCT.

      If you were to buy it today (22/23 model), would you buy the standard or go with the AS? And why? I know I want the DCT, but haven't decided standard or AS. As always, there's pros/cons to both. Thanks.

    Great vids as always guys. Apologies if you've already answered this elsewhere but, given your in depth review of the Triumph Rally Pro and now the AT, how do you think they compare overall?

      I think, but not sure they have the same Shoa suspension which is excellent out of the box. They are very close in so many ways. The Rally Pro comes with more useful stuff standard, for example heated seats for rider and pillion and a few other things.

    The only DCT I've driven is a Porsche 911S, they call it the PDK, or Doppelkupplung. LOL True! My first 2 wheeler at 10 years old was a 1937 Cushman semi-scooter. It was huge! I worked on it 10 hours to ride it 10 minutes, including making transmission parts at the school shop class! At 13, my Dad felt sorry for me, and got me a 1959 Ducatti 200 single, basket case!! 2 months later, many hours in the school machine shop, I had a real bike! Rode the wheels off that. At 16 I had a job, and a 1 year old 1967 Norton 750 P11 Scrambler!! I've had 40-50 bikes since, including a 1978 R100RS still out in the garage with 400,000+ miles on it I've had since new. My left hand is wired to a clutch, I don't even think about it. It took years to make my right foot stop trying to "shift" the brake lever! (English bikes were right shift). Not sure I could do a DCT bike. 8) --gary

    Totally agree re DCT comment. I have a ‘22 ATAS DCT, had a 750X DCT before then, and before then a CRF250l. I can do whatever I want w/ the DCT, just do it differently.

    G'day Dave, you and Clubby are always a good watch mate. I'm currently riding a 2016 KLR650 until I get off my P plates. The KLR's not a bad bus to get about town on but I don't think I'd take it on any long hauls as the vibration at 100KM/h drives me nuts. The later models are probably a lot better. Anyway when I retire my KLR I'm tossing up between a Norden 901, KTM 890 Adv., Ducati Desert X, Triumph Tiger 900 and the Honda Africa Twin Adv. Sports with quick shifter. I want reliability and something that'll suit someone at 6'3". I think I'm leaning toward the Honda at this stage. Of course I might change my mind after riding them all. Any thoughts on reliability and something that'll suit my height?

    Remember power settings are 1=more power and 4=economy. That caught me up first time I started adjusting mine.

      I remember it as 'more bars = more intervention' so more bars in TC means more intervention.

      Power is always the same…You can change throttle response, engine braking, traction control, wheelie control, abs setting etc…

    I would go with the dtc.Its different and its a new challenge.It also comes tubless which is generally a blessing.Its heavier but its an Adventure bike?Top production.Thanks.

    You really need to pull the e brake on the DCT, and install a left hand rear brake in its place ( tactical mindz has an inexpensive kit). The change off-road is amazing for right technical terrain. Everything you did with a clutch you can do with the lrhb and makes tight maneuvers a dream. Just my 2 cents after having retrofitted. My ebrake is a Velcro strap I put on the front or lhrb brake lever and it works great until I can figure a way to fit the e brake to the kickstand.

    Surely the ideal gear change system for a modern motorcycle is a high quality quickshifter. Gives you gear changes that are as fast as you could possibly want/need/imagine along with the option of feathering the clutch when required and all without the weight and wallet penalty of a DCT.

      Yeh I don’t know about that, I have a 2018 AT CRF1000AS with the slipper clutch, and most gear changes up and down are without using the clutch. I also have an R1200RTP with a quick shifter, it’s not as good as you would think, clunky at wrong speed going up, clunky with any throttle going down. I much prefer the slipper clutch to the quick shifter.

      For those interested, I have a 2022 standard AT with QS, and the QS is excellent. Just from 1 to 2 and 2 to 1 can be clunky, but that is the case with most QS's as far as I am aware.

      I've been around since the invention of DCT. One thing that gets lost in conversation is that the DCT transmission is a manual gearbox. 1, 3, 5 on one side and 2, 4, 6 on the other. The 'controller' selects 1 on side A and 2 on side B. At X RPM the controller engages clutch_A. When it determines a 'ratio change' is needed, it disengages clutch_A and 'engages clutch_B', placing you in gear 2. At almost the same time it changes side_A from 1 to 3, ready for the next change. That's how ratio, or 'gear' changes happen so fast. That whole process is "computer controlled", but the actual 'gear changes' still happen. In the original BMW auto (car) version, the driver had to move the 'stick', but the 2 clutches and gear box still did the change, it had a start/stop 'clutch' between engine/gearbox also. Hope that helps a little, not much room here to explain more/better. Peace... --gary

    Dave, you actually broke the handguard support, not where you're pointing to but in the base of the black plastic support, next to the mirror stem bolt. As me how I know and how I can spot it :P

      We discovered that after filming. But it still went back together as stated and we cable tied that bit when I got home.

    Thank you for an informative review guys. Over here in South Africa we do not see many ATs on the roads. This is a pity as the product is outstanding. The large adventure bike market is completely dominated by BMW GS with KTM being a distant second. Part of the reason is the outstanding service and back up offered by Motorrad dealerships. GS owners join the various BMW clubs and become part of the GS family.
    On the contrary I have seen some Honda dealerships closing down. In the city where I live Honda now shares their premises with an Indian car maker.
    Back the the AT. Does the bike suffer from the common trait of V twins and parallel twins? I am referring the engine heat cooking the riders thighs. I sold my F800GS as it as just to uncomfortable to commute in summer due to the above reason.

    I had the DCT on my 2010 vfr1200f. Sadly that model didn’t have traction control, when the back wheel spun up on a roundabout, not having a clutch to shut down the power ended up with it on its side 😔

    Advernture sports DCT for a round-the-world trip? Would the DCT make it easier for river crossing, not stalling, etc? Or too complicated to get things fixed in remote areas? it is a Honda though so as reliable as they come.

    I have the 2020 ATAS ES in a manual transmission. The suspension is just too soft to really push hard off road even when adjusted to stiffer settings. Aside from that I really have no complaints. It is amazing off road (remember it IS 530 lbs) It does just fine on everything from single track to freeways. And to anyone who has bought or is planning on buying one, tires transform this bike. Choose wisely.

      Agree tyes do tranform this bike. You may recall in the first test video I said even with road bases tyres the bike is handling really well in the dirt. The DCT had good road tyes and wow.

      @@spudboy1328 Depends what you are doing. If you are doing alot of dirt then spend the money, know they're not going to last long and have some fun. Otherwise Road trail and...... Pirellis of course!

    20:50 having tested that 'feature' it doesn't work all that great. I managed to actually snap off part of the aluminium bracket its attached to. Just get bark busters if you are going offroad.

    i see an optional DCT gear lever is available to make it more like a manual transmission, that might be better than the paddles?

      I. Have that foot shifter on my mine and it’s great. Old habits did mean that I rolled off throttle tad when shifting gears which wasn’t needed so I had to think of it as a quickshifter:-)

    I’ve got a Vstrom 1000 and AK550 scooter. Not changing gears becomes quite the luxury, and I find myself riding the AK more and more. I love the Strom, but the scooter is just so easy…and it sounds like a V-twin. I like this DCT concept, just think the bike itself is a little heavy.

      Russ, I assume you mean the Noodoe System. Its a bit of a gimmick in my opinion. I find it difficult to keep my phone synced with it. But that aside, the bike is fantastic. Its a rarely spoken of (locally) gem!!

    Mate just bought a 1100 AS manual, what a unit, just too big,top heavy for the size of the both of us(5'8")...was after a V-Strom 1050, but might consider a standard model,as there's a few bargains about, so prices are similar? Didn't realise they were so different, until you see both together!
    P.S; Annoying thing is,no oil sight glass that I could see, and the dipstick won't come out without removing the lower crashbar,imagine having to to that ever morning while on a long tour?

    The large tank would be nice but I still prefer the idea of the base model.
    My gal is always jabbing me because since they came out all she's heard is Honda Africa Twin! I'd talk about them and when I finally saw them on the road I'd get excited and start jabbering.
    Then I bought a Pan America. lol
    I still admire the ATs, they are phenomenal bikes but I'll go for something like the T-7 for my next bike. I'm not getting any younger. ;)

      The T7 has a high centre of gravity, so put's it no different to the AT.

    What in your opinion is the better bike, the Africa twin or the Norden 901?

      To close to call for different reasons. Suspension is better on the Africa Twin, particularly the rear. Techs on the Norden and access to them is far superior.

    I'm really curious to live with a DCT bike for a bit but want the lightest platform for dirt riding. I think I would choose the standard (base) bike with DCT.

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV you are mixing... there two models standard and Adventure Sport. Each of those can come with DCT. The DCT addition is only 10KG

      @@dudyoz17 I disagree. We were comparing the standard with an adventure sport dct es the weight difference is 30 kg. Don't take my word for it, read the specs. Kerb weight includes all fluids! No further correspondence will be entered into.

    most people dont know, but you can actually get an optional extra on the DCT that is a shift pedal. Honestly, it becomes the best of both worlds...

    I think if Honda had initially released the DCT with a foot shifter and left the full auto functionality out, or at least as a secondary option, it would have been received very differently. Seems most peoples initial complaints are with the shift points (because everyone has different preferences here). If it was all manual all the time straight out of the box, minds would have been blown.

      Wouldn't it have been a quick shifter in that configuation? Coz that's exactly what a quick shiter does.

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Not quite. The DCT can’t be stalled, no matter what. And given the nature of a DCT the shifts themselves are instant and incredibly smooth by comparison.

      Many are unaware that Honda offers a foot shifter for DCT bikes. So, basically - quickshifter without having to use a clutch.

    I own a 2017 manual AT and love it. What the hell was Honda thinking building an ADV bike with basically no windscreen . AKA the base AT

      Oh I didn't mind it. But when it colder I was glad I was on the bigger screened version.

      I ride the base AT, and initially I was concerned and thought I would add an aftermarket screen, but for me at least having ridden it now 6000KM + I not going to worry about it. The wind is deflected nicely as is.

    The atas es is a great bike, but the seat removal and adjustment is a PIA and changing or cleaning the air filter is ridiculous with all the hidden clips and brackets etc. ES suspension is the best electronic suspension I’ve had on a bike. G mode is not recommended on tarmac, use for offroad only. Initially the apple car play is a great feature, but you soon get tired of how many button press you need to do to adjust map and destination etc, cant beat BMWs whiz wheel controller.

      Please go back to it now. It was shot in 4K and is clear as a bell. Premiere mode on youtube temporarily reduces quality of video so instant chat can work.

    i just wish i could afford one or pay one off while on disability
    id get the base non DCT model in black and red then carry a roll up fuel bladder for longer trips
    current bike is a v star 650 classic and the rough as guts roads around my town wagga wagga bloody hurt after a while and i had 3 bolts come out of the back of my bike and nearly lost the passenger seat the rear lights and entire rear wheel cover so im probobly not going to ride the v star for a while incase more things break due to the roads here
    need a adventure bike like the KLR of africa twins for here 😆

    Biggest criticism of all variants is the hard seat. Honda didn’t make this to be sat on for hours on end.

      I'd agree with that, I find the seat to be uncomfortable after 2 hours riding. But having said that a few people have no issues with it at all, so I guess I'm unlucky.

    Hello to the motorbike community. I have a question for anyone with the knowledge and experience. I am contemplating buying a brand new ADV this spring. I basically have it narrowed it down to 2 options.
    Option A) 2023 Honda Africa Twin Super Adventure Manual. Like the style and look, I am concerned about the continual maintenance on the chain. It is not uncommon for me to jump on my current bike and put ~500 km's on it in a day on the weekend (311 miles). I am also concerned about the comfort, both in the seat and wind protection. I read lots of information and people love them and of course people will gripe as well and for good reason, experience on the bike. Everyone is different. Is this bike going to be comfortable enough for a few very long days in the saddle from time to time? Although we all get off our bikes every 2-3 hours to fuel on a long trip, still good to have really good comfort when needed. Is this bike the one to have if a person gets an upholsterer to redo the seat to your butt contours? Will that make it an awesome long haul machine?
    Option B) 2023 Yamaha Super Tenene 1200. I understand this bike is boring (perhaps compared to some of the competition) but with that come great all day comfort in the saddle and super easy maintenance and reliability. Maybe not as much fun as some of the competition, but my current bike also has shaft drive and has had zero issues in 13 years of ownership. So maybe I don't want to give up reliability and low maintenance? Also, perhaps the Tenere is reaching it's last year of production, what happens if they do this year and I want to own the bike for 10+ years?
    This bike that I buy will be a long long time purchase and possibly my last bike (maybe not), but as we get older we look for more comfort. The riding I will do is 80-90% on the pavement and 10-20% gravel and fire roads. HOWEVER, I live an hour away from the mountains and perhaps with an ADV, that ratio will switch to less highway and more gravel/fire roads..........we'll see, the ADV could open a whole new chapter in my riding. The Honda would be a no brainer, but does the Yamaha do the same job with a little less fun factor?
    Would love feedback from all people that have/had either or both bikes and let me know based on your experience and knowledge. Thank you!

A salesman quoted me a price but they were still waiting for one to come in. Always a question about parts availability and resale value in one's mind when a model is going to be retired.
