For criminology and urban planning students. Concentric Zone Theory was created by Ernest Burgess in 1925. This Chicago school urban land use model was based off the 1925’s metropolis. The model assumes that a city is laid out on an isotropic plain or (Flat). It must be clear that this is not a model of all cities but a model of the industrial city at the peak of the industrial city. From a city's central business district; five rings called concentric zones are placed. For each individual city these rings will vary dependent on the physical and urban geography of the city.
Transportation at the time consisted of walking, street car lines, the earliest automobiles, and railroads to connected suburbs. Criminologists use this theory to spatially examine crime that results from social disorganization. The book called “The City” by Park, Burgess, & McKenzie, 1925 contained this model and analyzed crime in the industrial city.
The Concentric Zones
Zone 1 - Central Business District - Varying Violent Crime / White Collar Crime
Zone 2 - Zone in Transition - Factories / Deteriorating Homes - High Crime
Zone 3 - Zone of Working Class Homes - Low Class Residential / Working Class Homes - Medium Crime
Zone 4 - Zone of Better Residences - Middle Class Residential / Newer Homes - Low Crime
Zone 5 - Commuter Zone - Suburbs - Low Crime
