As someone who has autism, but also have an autistic brother, I’ve seen parts of this film and I do agree that this depiction can be seen as harmful and I’m glad you guys talked about it (also I loved hearing Rachel’s opinion) and you guys did a great job explaining the topic!
Hey, as an autistic person you handled the explanation super well!! I hated this movie but I 100% agree it was hilarious in a weird way because its insane and stupid and wild. Thank you for spending so much time talking about it in the beginning!!

imho in the case of movies like split - id absolutely say specifying the disorder is much more dangerous than just saying "ok, this character is ambiguously crazy" (though, typically this refers to psychotic/schizophrenia spectrum disorders) but speaking as someone with DID that particular movie + other movies that namedrop DID/"MPD" have negatively impacted my life in terms of peoples perception of my disorder and likely my diagnostic process as well. so there's my two cents on that
Curious if you caught the series Many Sides of Jane. If so do you feel this brings a thoughtful & accurate example of DID? Would love to hear someone's opinion with a personal impact of the disorder. Hope you have a good day.
Yeah I hope they talk about that specifically in a podcast because its easy to think that people wouldn't assume DID = serial killer but in reality any negative depiction of mental illness in popular media is super harmful

the security officer is just “magical helpful old black man” trope we commonly see in film. only it’s usually done slightly more tastefully. here he literally shows up exactly when the plot demands and only says exactly what needs to be said before leaving the movie for good.
Most people on the spectrum only become violent towards themselves when they have meltdowns due to being unable to process and communicate their emotions, and the only time someone on spectrum would really be violent towards another person is if they were having a meltdown and someone got in their space when they didn’t want them to, and they might push them away or hit them. In general though, violence is more common in children because it’s even harder for them to communicate compared to what those on the spectrum learn as they grow up. (This comes from someone with asd who would bang her head into the wall and, sometime still, punches herself while having meltdowns but has never been violent towards another person)
I really like that you guys wanna have the conversation about mental health in horror films. I'm bipolar and horror happens to be my favorite genre, but sometimes I dislike the portrayal of mental health disorders. We're all very dynamic and I wish horror would reflect that. Thanks again, guys!
As a female with ASD it was hard to be diagnosed because of the stereotypical way Autism is portrayed since it's predominatly male orientated & females mostly present completely differently. I have Asperger's, which is similar to Autism. So thanks for the heads up. What I thought, however, about that was that Travolta had a son who was autistic, so it kinda hits home for him.
I have Asperger’s too & it can be hard for me to watch movies that are so inaccurate towards autism and choose for the stereotypes rather than an actual traits
Uh...as an autistic person, ABA therapy is...not good. For many kids, it devolves into abuse. I don't mean to be rude or hypercritical or cruel but...that's not really a good thing to be in as far as autism goes.
That mini essay about Travolta's portrayal was well said. I have a younger brother with autism, and am always semi skeptical when it comes to portrayal in films or television.

John Travolta and his late wife spoke in the past about their late son, Jett, having Autism...I assume it was a formal diagnosis but I remember hearing about that multiple times over the last decade. Not saying this was a good depiction or anything (trust me), but with this in mind I'd like to think he didn't "just Google symptoms/characteristics of Autism."
17:15 It's a very important distinction to be made. As an easy example, I watch all ya'lls videos as they come out, I rewatch episodes of the kill count and podcast all the time, and if I was able to get ya'lls signatures, it would mean as much to be as the broadway performer signatures I have on my playbills. But that's just like. Appreciation for what you guys do, and your talent. Same thing for horror in general, I'm fixated and keep coming back because I appreciate what its doing, but the idea of these sorts of things happening in real life would obviously horrify me, because those are real people getting hurt, not dummies and life casts. The sort of obsession that makes one do things that would hurt others, as long as they know that would hurt others, is different, I think.
Im on the spectrum, from what I've seen in this film, it portrays a very face value depiction of autism rather than actually exploring it in a sensible way
Everytime I try to watch a clip from this film, I just feel so uncomfortable. On one hand, I have met people with low-functioning autism where this type of behavior is not unheard of, but on the other hand, as a person who is on the spectrum, I am totally disgusted by this stereotypical performance. This is the role Tropic Thunder made fun of with Simple Jack. In summary, It ticks me off, and I don't like it.
Preface - I have not seen this movie, however, I have been diagnosed with autism, and I do not think I could watch it without being extremely offended by Travolta's portrayal of someone with ASD. The problem I find with Hollywood's depictions of ASD is that they treat it like an illness (incidentally, please don't refer to ASD traits as symptoms, again it implies illness) it's not, our brains' are just wired differently, so they just work differently! ASD is something that you can't just throw into a movie as a catch-all explanation for a character's behaviour; if they're going to have a real world diagnosis there should be an accurate portrayal to back it up. Sorry for the rant, I'm not wanting to have a go at James and Chelsea, I adore the podcast, it's really helping me through the lock down because my routine is so thrown out. Keep up the fantastic work :)

Better yet, I should be studying hahahaha
James saying "Whatever, you can like a movie" in the most begrudging possible tone was my favorite part of the video. Also, I looked and IMDB says the kid is Danny. However (bear in mind, I haven't seen this movie), in that clip you showed I heard "Tanny", which I guess could be short for Tanner? I don't know.
The only thing I remembered about Fred Durst, after Limp Biscuit, he was in "Population 436." This movie freaks me out because my first actor crush was on Devon Sawa. Of course, I was 13 or 14.
John Travolta and Devon Sawa worked together on a movie called "Life on the Line" back in 2015, so I'm guessing that's how they met each other for this film.
Not sure if yuh guys will see this but I saw Chelsea's twitter feed and figured I'd give some praise where I felt some was due. Your guys podcast is quite honestly my favorite part of the channel. I've always loved horror but all the research done for these episodes has made me feel so much more knowledgable about films in general and I notice things that I never noticed before in new movies and films that I've already seen. I mean I do love that you guys do a mix between serious and then just being goofy but what I love most is coming out of the podcast with all this new knowledge on the horror genre as a whole. Its because of this channel that I learned of Carol glovers novel which I went and bought a copy of and in my last year of school used and cited for many of my schools newspaper articles for the entertainment column. This channel has also helped me learn that film is something that I thoroughly enjoy and would love to go into myself. So those who are being over dramatic and saying this that and the other about the podcast I dont feel understand the actual work and thought that's put into it. They're not just flimsy reviews. Their thorough critiques which I love because I've never heard you guys be completely negative in a film even in the ones you hate I've heard you find some good in which I feel many do not do. Anyways though, I hope people on the internet start to change their perspective on your guys podcast and I can't wait for the next episode!
One of my favorite bands is Black Light Burns. It is Wes Borland's band. Their first album was produced by Danny Lohner (from Nine Inch Nails). Also, they did an album called Lotus Island, which is a soundtrack replacement for the first 40 minutes of Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain.
Having a son with asd I can tell you everyone on the spectrum is different my son has speech delay and he does not completely understand people's feelings. As always love the podcast. Cool idea horror games that would make cool movies or TV series.
John Travolta doing a Mr Blonde reference is actually a reference to the fact that his character in Pulp Fiction is the brother of Vic Vega from Reservoir Digs
43:17 My theory as to the kid’s name is that Hunter’s ex-wife said Tanny. Tanny MIGHT be a nickname for Tanner but that raises the question of why. EDIT: I checked names.org (one of my favourite sites) and only 187 people in the US since 1880 have had the legal name Tanny. I checked here because there’ll always be people who give their kids nicknames for actual names, just ask my aunt Tilly. So I scrolled down to Related Names to see if Tanner shows up. Nada. Tannny shows up, people have named their kids Tannny but never call Tanners Tanny. I even checked out Tanner’s Related Names and nothing. www.names.org/n/tanny/about www.names.org/n/tanner/about
"I want to play faith at our wedding" "FUCK YEAH" I love you guys. Also Limp Bizkit was so solid for 3 years, RIP lol P.s. What a great podcast! I love listening to the two of you. You're entertaining, thoughtful and insightful. As to your inquiry about whether it's better to depict someone is generally crazy or with a particular mental condition, I believe if you're going to portray the condition you have to do it accurately or else you risk creating a misconception that harmfully and unjustly labels people living with such a condition in a negative light. Their thorough critiques which I love because I've never heard you guys be completely negative in a film even in the ones you hate I've heard you find some good in which I feel many do not do. Anyways though, I hope people on the internet start to change their perspective on your guys podcast and I can't wait for the next episode!
Guess I'm gonna get my Dead Meat soaked in Liquid Death.
John Travolta was co-starring with Devon Sawa in a movie a few years ago called Life on the Line with Kate Beckinsale
She did say "Danny" in that clip, not "Tanner," although I can see how it could have been misheard.
I'm in the spectrum and I'm so so so happy how you guys talked about it at the beginning 👏🏻💛
One and a half years of watching Dead Meat.
Man this movie Fits in the callegory of Travolta Films like Battlefield Earth as So Bad there Hillariously Good
Im autistic and i cried during this movie. Its so excessively cruel, especially knowing that John travolta had an autistic son who died
I'm 34 years old and I was diagnosed with autism a few months ago. I had to check out this review again.
Who else knows the intros so well by heart?
i know this is years old but i HAVE to mention that, like this movie, the adventures of sharkboy & lavagirl begins with a quote from lavagirl herself
This film almost pushed me to tears, I felt so sad for Moose
You must be kidding 😂
One of my favorite bands is Black Light Burns. It is Wes Borland's band. Their first album was produced by Danny Lohner (from Nine Inch Nails).
Also, they did an album called Lotus Island, which is a soundtrack replacement for the first 40 minutes of Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain.
I know this is an older episode but you should really look into how harmful ABA can be for autistic kids.
your wedding is gonna be THE EVENT!
Fred Durst was in the movie “Be Cool” with John Travolta
Having a son with asd I can tell you everyone on the spectrum is different my son has speech delay and he does not completely understand people's feelings. As always love the podcast. Cool idea horror games that would make cool movies or TV series.
I bought this movie on Blu-Ray on the strength of Chris Stuckman's review. I had so much fun.
@The Fightin' Hobbit Same. A tip o’ my red cap, Mr Durst.
I even checked out Tanner’s Related Names and nothing.
www.names.org/n/tanny/about

You should be on Hot Ones James.
Oh and thanks guys. It's been 48 hours now and I haven't stopped listening to Chocolate Starfish.
YEAH.
I just wanted to say, even though youtube alerted me about the upload over an hour late- I love the Kill Count series
I’m going to a field trip early in the morning and I saw dead meat pop up and guess what I’m watching now🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🤣😄
As someone on the spectrum, I'mma just skip this one. Keep up the hard work all the same!
Raw cones Be Good People!!!
They discuss that this movie is problematic, I definitely think it's worth at least watching that part.
@Ryan Stewart I'm on the spectrum as well and that didn't really phase me at all. It's so overused that it loss all power.
@@toastman3421 ... I'm quite sure they meant they won't watch the movie itself, not the podcast
@@Luan-st2gb Pretty sure not.
"I want to play faith at our wedding" "FUCK YEAH" I love you guys. Also Limp Bizkit was so solid for 3 years, RIP lol
P.s. As a father of two autistic children I appreciate the amount of care that you two put into discussing this, as opposed to just jumping into it and laughing at the perceived "stereotypical" autistic person. It is rather unfortunate that Hollywood cares more about portraying gender/sexuality accurately, but just doesn't seem to care about accurately portraying those mental and social disorders. Love you guys keep it up.
I feel like Fred Durst when he was writing the script was writing Hunter Dunbar as a Character he was making him as an Action Star like Reb Brown
Hell yes another Dead Meat show.
Hey James, I was wondering if you could do a KILL COUNT of *I Still Know What You Did Last Summer* with Jennifer Love Hewitt?
We should get a podcast episode on ‘Misery’ since it’s a much better “obsessed fan” film. Love that we got Chelsea’s sister’s professional analysis on this one
This is the angriest I’ve ever been watching a movie. It’s so offensive and needlessly cruel and mean spirited. What a waste of time. I’m so glad y’all are covering it.
This podcast has Big "Respects the Boulevard" Energy
What a great podcast! I love listening to the two of you. You're entertaining, thoughtful and insightful. As to your inquiry about whether it's better to depict someone is generally crazy or with a particular mental condition, I believe if you're going to portray the condition you have to do it accurately or else you risk creating a misconception that harmfully and unjustly labels people living with such a condition in a negative light. Keep up the great work!
Hey i really want to say i love this channel so much and thank you so much for all of your videos ❤️❤️❤️
