  • It may be difficult to tell a non-practicing Catholic that he or she can’t receive Communion, but-as Fr. Mike Schmitz proves in this video-in the big picture, you would actually be helping the person. While telling an awe-inspiring story about a seminarian, Fr. Mike lays out what it means to be a practicing Catholic and shows how the requirements can transform a person's life.

I'm a baptist, I was born and raised this way. My parents are this way as well. I want to convert to Catholicism, but I'm nervous to tell my parents. My whole dream is to become a priest. I'm trying to understand things about catholicism, being Baptist. I just wanted o share. I love your videos and how you are so friendly.

Greg Grimer so any other day would be okay? I’m not trying to fool God... some Sundays I can’t go because of work. And I live in a small town in a Protestant country, so we have mainly Protestant Churches. We have one Orthodox Church and one Catholic Church in my town and they don’t have regular services, so some days I do have to go to a Protestant Church if I want to go every week. I hate living in this town...

Fr Mike, I am an ex-muslim. I became an atheist and have been for the past 8 months. These months have been hell for me. I’ve fallen in and out of eating disorders and had suicidal thoughts. I want to seek the truth and for no reason these past weeks I’ve been stuck on your videos and other videos about Catholicism. Something about it keeps drawing me in. This is pretty long but *long story short* do you have any suggestions for beginners. Any directions you want to give me.

thank you for the video. I had a similar story also. I used to be a protestant- the one that loves to discuss theology and different schools of Protestantism. one time, I was stuck in a place where the only church available was a Catholic chapel. because I wanted to hear the sermon about Christian living, I went there every mass. such action didn't go undetected by another devout protestant and she called me a hypocrite for going to a Catholic mass. I went to ask the Bishop- who was available at that time- and discuss this concern. it was a blessed meeting! he discuss to me about apostolic churches and apostolic succession and so on. to cut the long story short, I am now a Catholic, confirmed at the age of 27. I am doing the 5 precepts of the Catholic church but yet to perfect it.

My ex-wife was Catholic; I was raised Protestant. We went to mass regularly and instead of receiving communion, I crossed my arms over my chest and they would give me a blessing instead. I was told that if you are not Catholic OR if you are Catholic but feel that you are not comfortable with communion, you can just receive the blessing (ie a quick prayer). I didn't feel it was complicated; I even respected the efficiency of it. I am also a former Christian who does not usually stress over these things lol. But there were aspects of Catholicism that I respected.

As a Jew, I must say that I do not get how people can complain about going to pray once a week, when we are ought to pray 3 times a day and confess our sins every day; how people can complain about not eating meat every friday when we are abstinent from sex every month in the week of the woman's period; how people can complain about missing one meal twice a year, when we have 10 feast days every year, where in some of them, we neither eat nor drink from
dawn to sunset and in others, like Yom Kippur, we feast from one evening to the next.
Christians should really be thankful that's only what they are required to do, because these are relatively easy in comparison to other religions.
In Islam, for example, people need to pray 5 times a day and neither eat nor drink from dawn to sunset for an entire week. I also think a lot more was used to be demanded from Catholics.
We may disagree about how one should show devotion to God but one should show devotion to God by at least being ready to comply with such small requirements, even if one fails to do so. The complaints show how we Western people have really become self-centered and egoistic.

I grew up Catholic; went to Catholic schools. I know what the religion believes. Many of the beliefs are either not in the Bible or are opposite to what the Bible teaches. The amount of superstition and gullibility among Catholic believers is astonishing. Of course, I'm sure some truly are saved among the Catholic flock, those who believe strictly on the accomplishment of Jesus Christ on the cross for their salvation. But when the current pope says (on the record, check TH-cam) Jesus failed on the cross, you wonder how many people believe this fraud.

    • @Berlinquilla

I was never encouraged to read the Bible in school. It was when I began to read the word of God that I found true faith in Jesus Christ and not in an institution whose beliefs are, more often than not, the opposite of what the Bible teaches. Belief in Jesus is the only way to heaven and no one comes to the Father but by Him, while your current pope says Christ failed at the cross (see TH-cam).

You will be reconciled to Him in friendship and will then be ready to receive Him in the Eucharist! prince Edward you realize that Jesus was speaking hyperbolically when he said that right?.... all of the people around him when he said that, they took it just like that.... as a hyperbole, when he said call no man on Earth father what he was saying was don't be like those boastful Pharisees who only want to have the title because it makes them feel glorified that's the problem with you Protestants and Sola scriptura you take the Bible literally when the Bible is not meant to be taken 100% literally or so since you call no man on Earth father because you only have one father who is in heaven what did you call your dad?... I hope you didn't call him dad or Papa because everyone knows that's just slang for father I hope you didn't call your doctor doctor because that means teacher I also assume because you have sinned and are a sinner you only have one hand and one eye because Jesus told you to cut off your hand if it makes you sin and to pluck out your eye.......you see jesus was speaking hyperbolically there just as he was when he said call no man on Earth father I hope that you learn more about the Catholic faith and you come back to the one true church that was founded by Jesus Christ God bless you and may peace be upon you always

Yes for sure-I could not live-I'd be so spiritually dead without and dark without the relationship i have with Christ and when it reaches it's high point in the Eucharist-OH WOW-TO JUST KNOW AND FEEL SO ALIVE AND CLEAN -JUST AS JESUS TOLD US, AND TOLD US AGAIN WHEN THOSE DISCIPLES WHO KNEW HE WAS TALKING ABOUT EATING HIS FLESH, WALKED AWAY-AND HE WENT EVEN DEEPER AND SAID UNLESS YOU GNASH OR CHEW ON MY FLESH YOU HAVE NO LIFE IN YOU. HE USED A STRONGER WORD FOR EAT.And he even said the manna your fathers ate was food for your body, this is food for the soul, for the spirit. If he was just telling a parable wouldn't he have explained it- Oh i pray every day for the time when " THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS WHAT A REAL PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR LORD IS ", And not only a Bible relationship which is a static relationship which depends totally on emotions and not the truth.-I LOVE U ALL-GOD BLESS

Very well explained but it is a false doctrine. The Catholic church is simply a dean of serpents and runs contrary to the word of God. Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven. There is no other way to truth but through Christ the Lord. Please read the bible and learn of your heavenly father personally. You don't need a man to explain it to you read the bible. If sexually abusing children isn't enough see the list below that's from the word of God (Bible) that say why we should not follow the Catholic Church.
What the Bible say about practices of Catholicism. I love you all and may God bless you.
      1. Why does it condemn clerical dress? (Matt. 23:5-6).
      2. Why does it teach against the adoration of Mary? (Luke 11:27-28).
      3. Why does it show that all Christians are priests? (1 Pet. 2:5,9).
      4. Why does it condemn the observance of special days? (Gal. 4:9-11).
      5. Why does it teach that all Christians are saints? (1 Cor. 1:2).
      6. Why does it condemn the making and adoration of images? (Ex. 20:4-5).
      7. Why does it teach that baptism is immersion instead of pouring? (Col. 2:12).
      8. Why does it forbid us to address religious leaders as "father"? (Matt. 23:9).
      9. Why does it teach that Christ is the only foundation and not the apostle Peter? (1 Cor. 3:11).
      10. Why does it teach that there is one mediator instead of many? (1 Tim. 2:5).
      11. Why does it teach that a bishop must be a married man? (1 Tim. 3:2, 4-5).
      12. Why is it opposed to the primacy of Peter? (Luke 22:24-27).
      13. Why does it oppose the idea of purgatory? (Luke 16:26).
      14. Why is it completely silent about infant baptism, instrumental music in worship, indulgences, confession to priests, the rosary, the mass, and many other things in the Catholic Church?
Leave the traditional of religions out of it follow Jess Christ.
To know the truth please seek our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus himself said I am the Way the Truth and the Life no one come to the Father but through him. Go to a quiet place in your dwellings and pray to the Lord personally. He wants to have a personal relationship with you. Ask him to forgive you of sins then repent asking him to come into your heart and you will be saved. Pray and read the word of the God often (Bible). That is your church. I love you and my God bless you always.

    • @jonathanfairchild
      @jonathanfairchild 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Other people have given the correct answer but here is why: traditionally and biblically speaking (Old Testament), for the Church, when the sun sets the next day begins. So in a liturgical sense Sunday does not start at 12:00 am even though that's when the calendar date begins. So going to Saturday evening mass or, Saturday Vigil mass, is considered going to mass on Sunday.

Hello there! Saturday evening mass is an approved Sunday mass as it is simply a vigil! You certainly are not in a state of mortal sin by attending it! It's good to note that it needs to be an evening mass. If you went to a Saturday morning mass for example - that would not meet the Sunday obligation. Hope that helps!! Also practicing Catholics must adhere to this: don't have sex except in a valid marriage, don't divorce, don't watch porn, don't use contraception, don't have abortions and don't vote for politicians who support legal abortions.

    • @sesenena7013
      @sesenena7013 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

standev1 I would say yes and no: all the actions you cited are sins (except for divorce which is more complicated, there might be cases when divorcing is the right thing to do), but if you commit sins, acknowledge that they are sins and repent you can still consider yourself a practicing catholic. There is a difference between sinning and going your merry way and sinning and asking for forgiveness

Fasting, going to church, taking communion, and confessing sins are all good things and true believers will "want" to do these things from the heart. These good things come from the Bible and are affirmed by the church, but the arbitrary numbers and dates and requirements are traditions of men. Traditions are good but not obligatory for all. The Apostle Paul went great lengths no NOT bind the conscious of men (Rom 14), why should the Catholic Church makes such rules? Fortunately God's word is not as arbitrarily obscure in rule keeping as the Catholic Magisterium. The same tendency to create human traditions was as present in St.Paul's day as it is in ours.
1 Timothy 4:2-5 "Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
Colossians 2:23 "These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh."
A better question would not be, "Am I a practicing Catholic?", rather "Am I a regenerate follower of Jesus?"

Matthew Fisher 2 Thessalonians 2:15 “So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote.” By the authority of the Catholic Church established by Christ Himself to Peter through all of the apostles thru an unbroken chain to the current Pope.
