  • Watch a Sun Bear "Ting Ting" licks clean a peanut butter jar with her long tongue!
"Ting Ting" is a wild-born, 22-year-old female sun bear from Borneo, now living at the Oakland Zoo. Sun bears are the smallest and least studied of the 8 bear species in the world. Here, she just discovered an almost empty jar of "Skippy" brand peanut butter, one of her favorites.
Among the sun bears' unique physical adaptations to life in the forests of Southeast Asia is their very long tongue. (About 8-10 inch/19-25 cm long. The jar is 6.5 inches deep.) It helps them reach into small holes and narrow crevices, where food items such as honey and termites could be found.
The same long tongue works perfectly for licking clean a peanut butter jar.
Due to the continuing habitat loss, poaching and increasing human population in the region, many fear Sun Bears will become extinct in the coming decades.
