Frederic Malle The Night vs Nishane Mana - fragrance first impressions

- In this video, I’m comparing two luxurious oud masterpieces: Frederic Malle The Night and Nishane Mana. Both are high-end fragrances that celebrate the richness of oud in completely unique ways. The Night is a bold and opulent take, blending deep oud with a sensual rose-amber accord, while Mana redefines oud with a modern twist, incorporating creamy and spicy facets for a smoother, more versatile experience. I’ll explore their scent profiles, longevity, and the overall luxury vibe they bring to your collection. If you love oud and appreciate high-end artistry, this is a comparison you don’t want to miss!

To anyone it might concern: Be sure to look at prices of samples vs full bottles. I just discovered that it's significantly cheaper (in Norway, where i live) to buy 25 × 2ml samples, then a full 50ml bottle of; Xerjoff, Tony Iommi Monkey Spesial and Diefeid, Alexandria 2. It's a little cheaper to get samples of; Nishane, mana, Nefs, and Shem. If you're going to use it all the time, a full bottle is obviously better. But for a collector who wears it 4-5 times a year, maybe less, it's possibly better to just get samples of these and save your cash for something you'll wear more often. I just purchased 2 × Deifeid and Alexandria 2. I'll just put it in a 5ml decant and i now have a cheaper 4ml of each (with a better sprayer). ❤❤👏👏
very true! often decants are sold by normal people that just want some return on their investment and can be acquired for decent prices.
Good tip!
@SeldomlyOften Yes, I do that myself. I sell decants at purchasing prices. But I bought official samples from a store, and it was cheaper per ml than the full bottle.
I love both of these fragrances. Great review
Best interview ever ! Your initial reaction to The Night was brilliant. If you want a fermented cheese smell check out Dead of night by Strangelove NYC. The opening is savage! It is a beauty
Glad you guys are enjoying it. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll try that one out :)
update: I just looked at the price for that thing... wtf?
@@SeldomlyOften I know. I actually got it for a discounted price because I knew someone who worked in Selfridges. It is outrageous the price you have to pay for "natural" ingredients. Crazy shit. It is a banger tho lol
PS. You were so blown away initially by the night you were thinking of selling a limb to get a bottle. Then reality bit ! I do that all the time 🫤
I’ve got both. Mana a is nice. The Night is glorious. I wanted to stop you from spraying the. Mana before it overpowered the subtleties and nuances of the Night! Great vid. I 2nd the Ajmal recommendations above. I have Mukhallat Shams and love it.

Get it- And I'll buy a decant from you. This is my favorite out of all of the Desert Gems line. I just don't need 50ml of of it. My the Moon decant lasted a whole year, so a little goes a long way. Thanks

The price is outrageous
Great review 👍
Yeah price is a HUGE issue with this fragrance but the scent is undeniably awesome. I still want a bottle :D
I love both fragrances a lot! Mana has been on my wishlist for a long time. The Night is amazing, but the price is completely outrageous...
@@yannickgluck4224 The Night is absolutely incredible, I’ll try to sample Louis Vuitton Pur Oud as the LV store in Milan appears to have it. Then decide…
@@SeldomlyOften have you ever tried one of the ALD Oud fragrances? Ramsey always raves about them, but they are really tough to come by. They are supposedly of similar quality for a way cheaper price tag. The LV scent looks interesting, but hard to come by as well. But I am looking forward to hearing about your thoughts of the fragrance!
@ no, hard to come by and limited batch stuff is not really my thing. I hate having to buy stuff because of FOMO.
@@SeldomlyOften Very true. That is what is keeping me away from the artisanal houses...
@ same, as much as I would like to get some Areej La Doré frags I hate the limited availability and access these have.
Awesome review. You need to try Louis Vuitton Myriad, same style as Pur Oud
@@jakelift8326 seems like there is a lot of rose in Myriad, I’m intrigued though! Might check it out in Milano when I go there for Excense
I've had this on my to-sample list as well but the price for even 1ml is painful to the wallet, haha.
Your initial response to the opening was priceless!😂
@@nathanielmoody3656 it really caught me off guard, wasn’t expecting something like that 😂
@ I’m here for it! I haven’t delved into oud scents, so I didn’t know about this infamous “cheese note!”
Lately, I’ve been really craving the pleasant and comforting fragrances, and less of the challenging ones. Perhaps it’s because it’s a bit of a tough winter. So, oud isn’t where my head is at right now, but nevertheless I enjoyed your review!
@@nathanielmoody3656 I've been a little under the weather this second half of January so I know what you are talking about. I'm also going towards more clean and simple stuff.

@@mustafajakubovic2204 yeah, tell me about it… I still want a bottle of The Night…

If you're into The Night, try Beauty and the Beast by Areej le Dore. To my nose they are very similar. They have their own distinct characteristics, but are definitely similar. (Plus, Beauty and the Beast is under $400usd)
@@Rome.Will. I would love to but the stupid Areej fragrances are impossible to get. I hate limited releases like that.
Try dua leather for the ages if you like Mana it’s spot on.
@@kevinmcdowell1793 is that a clone for the LV Ombré Nomade?
I was really impressed with the night when I first smelt it in Bangkok and I could’ve picked up a full bottle there for close to $1000 which I think was a good price but it’s still a hell of a money. I had another chance to try it when I was in Dubai and to be quite honest it didn’t impress me as much as the first time I smelled it. I still think that promise is the one that over delivers and is probably too cheap. I think we’re gonna see this kind of craziness from Estee Lauder. I would definitely be looking at trades or secondhand because it is a fragrance that might be just too much for most people.
Thanks for the input! Promise is amazing and I love it so much I also have the similar Oman Luxury Oud Aquilaria (I'll be reviewing them together btw).
Yeah I'm not paying retail on The Night, no intention on spending that much.
I still think you should try Prin fragrance. Saringkarn is kind of the night (twist in coniferous and smoky base)
I love Prin Lomros, he is one of my favorites! The Prin offering is vast and hard to navigate so I haven't investigated too much.
Thanks for the recommendation!
You last comments about the quick dissipation of The Night confirm my belief that you have a watered-down---maybe even fake sample. The Night is a beast and lasts all day and longer.
@@tenore8 I wore the rest of the fragrance the following day and it lasted the whole day. I wasn’t really pouting out the longevity either but the relatively sudden transition between the loud cheesy phase and the more woody phase.
There is also literally no reason for this sample to be fake. I didn’t ask for it or buy it, it was given by a person who doesn’t even do decants. But hey, guess we will never know.
Ciao Daniel, dove hai trovato il decant di the night? Lo cerco da settimane ma senza successo. Bel video come sempre. Bravo!
In regards to good sample atomizers, I found MFK and Vilhelm Parfumerie have outstanding 2ml sample sprayers. Wish more high-end houses used them.
I feel that house that actually care, always go for better options. Amouage, Electimuss, Tauer (surprisingly) and Les Indemodables have all awesome samples.
@@SeldomlyOften Don’t forget Les Abstraits. 3 ml and excellent sampler sprayers.
@@gerardzonjee again, brands that care about the marketing of their products... :)
Before pulling the trigger on a bottle of The Night I think you should check out Strangelove Dead of Night or Dusita Oud Inifini (discontinued sadly), both oud-rose compositions using the real thing and really beautiful in their own way
Thanks for the recommendation, I'm absolutely open to alternatives and suggestions :)
I found the oud pretty tame in the Night. I mostly got some of POAL and a little bit of oud.
@@Lamulaa huh, I only got a hint of POAL in the very very deep drydown, when all the funky oud is gone.
@ dang, any possibility you got a pré estee lauder batch? (2015 or before)
Heard some changes have been made to make it more palatable present-day
I tested some real assam hindi oud a couple of months ago. I detected the same ‘barnyardy’ oud note in the night aswell. But to me it unfortunately is less pronounced than I expected it to be.
@ no idea, got the sample from a guy that was generous enough to give me a try from his private bottle when I bought a Toskovat off him.
@ this is the cheesiest Oud I ever smelled and I have some pretty funky frags.
I like Mana more than ON, I like the castoreum opening vs the obnoxious sharp incense opening. It does last a very long time, but I feel is not as beast mode as Shem of Nefs( my favorite from that line).
@@Devasterium yeah it definitely has a more animalic touch than ON. I have a sample of Nefs, I’ll be covering that one soon 😊
Try Ajmal - Amir One / Two IF you like oud which seems to be the case
@@yusufhassan6151 thanks for the suggestion! Ajmal seems to have quality Oud fragrances 👍
@ check out The Perfume Guys Ajmal haul, they end it with Amir One and Two😄👍
How do you think those Ajmals compare to things like Dahn Oud Al Shams Special Edition (Ajmal) or Lao Oud (Bortnikoff)?
Ajmal makes super high-quality things in Purely Orient Collection, the have their own oud farm, so it’s natural oud in these fragrances. no matter if it’s Santal, Incense of Patchouli, they’re all VERY oudy and they are fantastic. great brand for oudy niche things. their main collection is nothing interesting to me though.
@@maistvanjr1 have not tried either of those so cant compare
I’ve sampled both The Night & Pur Oud, and price aside - couldn’t stand the stinkiness. The Moon for night has the right amount of animalics combined with the fruity floral accords and performance is ridiculous. Literally have to scrub it off after 24 hours.
Even with that being said, I still prefer Ombré Nomade, Oud Maracuja, Amber Aoud, Rude Oud by FDB & my number 1 fragrance of all eternity, Nasomatto’s Pardon.
@@JR01015 thanks for the comment, what about the differences between The Night and Pur Oud?
@ pur oud literally smells like woody oudy nuanced scent mixed with the smell of the middle of a pig farm. The Night is slightly more tolerable.
@ you got me even more interested in the LV 😅
Very interesting. I’ve been very interested in The Night, but as you mentioned, the price tag is…aggravating, to say the least. In the same ballpark, I’ve acquired Saahra, by fragrance du bois, and I really really like it. Give it a try if you haven’t!
Oh! And I totally agree with you with those sh***y samples. I’ve bought 4 from Nishane, and I have only tried one (that I had to transfer to one of my personal sample bottle) due to my lack of will to go through the whole process again. Nefs is still waiting…
I was lucky to just a decant of Neft (same shop) as they ran out of samples. I'll be featuring that in a video soon :)
As for Saahra, it's a pricey boy, need to see if I find a sample.
@ I can send you a decant if you want
@ the issue is that I live in Switzerland and shipping is usually expensive.
@ Neuchâtel here 🇨🇭
@ ah awesome, write to me on insta or send me an email :)
It's hilarious seeing Daniel being met yet again by that horrible black tipped sample sprayer 😂😂😂Definitely becoming the Joker to your Batman or the Lex to your Superman. You need to try Clive Christian Blonde Amber before the spring arrives because it's an incredible fragrance and also because they too use the same sprayer 🤣
@@shahzebnasir4692 hahaha, those samples are a huge pet peeve for me. I hate that brands use those, it makes me feel they don’t care. I’ll try to get a sample of Blonde Amber 👌

The Night is something special. I am still to dare wearing it in public. Those 5ml I have will last me a lifetime. What do you think about Silver Oud vs The Night, I still can't decide leaning towards Silver Oud.
@@iyanev Silver Oud is much much less offensive and strange. It wears heavier and more droning; I feel like it’s much more likable and smooth. I absolutely love Silver Oud.
great video, thank you! Daniel, do you know any perfume remotely close to The Night? maybe some Amouage Opuses or attars?
Thanks! Even something like Silver Oud is much more creamy and smooth than The Night (also has none of the rose) King blue has a fermented tinge but it's masked by the fruity notes and ambery base. I think the closest thing that I've smelled is the cheap Kadlaj fragrance I have: Pure Oud Mystical Indian. It has a similar fermented vibe but not as refined or long lasting.
@ thank you, i will try to find and test it ✍🏻 and talking about cheese, did you try Xerjoff’s Ceylon or Kemi?
@@baba_s_kosoy not yet those two, not very common but I might be able to get a decant :)
@@SeldomlyOften would be interesting to know your impressions especially comparing to The Night. i own a bottle of Ceylon for couple of years, the most corky yet potent cheese oud. on fragrantica it’s concidered as stinky and too animalic, but to my nose it’s really friendly and fun. nothing creepy at all, not fecal or pissy. Kemi Ilm is in the same direction, cheesy but way more sweet gourmand and soft.
@ I’ll definitely try to get a sample Ceylon then! I’m always up to discover fun Xerjoff fragrances 👌

@@kadavakollukishore I don’t really have go-to fragrances, I have many and I try to alternate everything. If it’s a recommendation for you, what type of fragrances do you like?
Your sample of The Night looks waaaay to clear. My juice is dark amber. Not sure you have the real deal. The Night is one of my prized scents. I am transformed whenever I wear it.
@@tenore8 it was an unsolicited gift, there was no reason for the guy to give me a fake. I also saw his collection and he doesn’t have low end stuff or dupes 🤷.
No real way to be certain. If it’s I fake I want to know which fake it is because it smelled sensational 😊
I was thinking the same thing, the juice can seem lighter in samples sometimes. Also, could be a newer batch. The Night is undeniably related to portrait of a lady, so if you’re familiar with that you can find it in there under the oud.
@@NikkoNight7 I don't get much POAL in the The Night, maybe in the deepest drydown but it's not obvious at all to me.
@@SeldomlyOftenthere is one factory in Switzerland that produces niche fragrance concentrates, alas idk the name. lots of niche dupes (and also non-official candles, soap etc) are based on their particular oils. usually fake-producing brands dupe popular and good-selling things, but this one only has catalogue with rare things similar to Roja, Xerjoff etc
so, if you’re not squeamish to dupes, just for the research, maybe you could find replica of the Night, it will be obviously based on that swiss oil cuz there’ only one manufacterer. it’s transparent or slightly yellowish, it smells gorgeous - barnyardey oud with rubber, white pepper, rose. and insanely long-lasting btw. my first reaction was laughing like crazy Whaaahahahhat?! and now my nose has adapted to it, it really resembles The Night to my nose, just a little more sharp.
@@baba_s_kosoy Interesting! without a name It's going to be hard to find though...
Everytime I try a new fragrance and it comes off smelling weird, I think to myself "Daniel would probably like this one" 😂 and the cheese accord here proves me right. On the other hand, when I smell a "perfumy" fragrance, I'm like "well, Daniel wound totally find this boring"
"On a scale from 0 to Seldomly Often, how weird is this scent?"
@@rafaelcolonelo1255 That made me laugh 😂
I have to admit that I’m gravitating towards lighter stuff recently, while still trying to keep it interesting.
Boring to me is a lack of personality 🙂
I find the rose and oud theme over done and most are quite poor. The Night is an exception. Nishane Mana just smells like a sweeter Ombre Nomade, which just smells like a better Oud Maracuja, etc etc.
True, there are many fragrances on the market with rose and oud but I guess they are notes that go very well together. I tend to stray away immediately when I see those note together but these fragrances smell fairly unique (except for ON).
with what would you go with as legit alternative? may be more than words?
Alternative to The Night? More than Words smells nothing like the FM at all, it's a much more sweet fruity fragrance with a western oud in it. The only alternative that I know of is actually the Kadlaj Pure Oud Mystical Indian that I have. Doesn't smells as good but for the price it's hard to go wrong.
@@SeldomlyOften Sorry I mispelled, I was asking for oud/rose combo, english isn't my first language
@@carlparent8718 no problem! Depends on the oud you like, if you like cleaner oud you should go with something like More Than Words (very sweet) or even Mana. If you like a more dirty oud, you need to check out The Moon.
I'm looking for a "safe" perfume with musk/oud profile. Would either of these fit the bill 😂
EDIT: 5:13 nvm
Not "safe" :D
Still awesome though.
In your case I would probably go with something like MFK's Oud. It's nice and balsamic, woody and very interesting, especially the extrait version. If you want more dirt, maybe something like Silver Oud from Amouage.
@@SeldomlyOften i personally believe perfumes are meant to be more than conventional aromatics so the night and mana are definitely "for me"s, however i have learned the very real effect that they can have on others 😂 so for now i want to try perfumes that sort of parody these standards by finding the holy grail of "safe" accords within the realm of modernity's discomfort with masculinity so something oudy or musky. i want to confuse the haters with their own biases by illogical thought but subtly enough so as not to be the one to have this talk because it gets old fast
@@жизненный_опыт ok, my best recommendation is Ormond Jayne Nawas of Oud Intensivo: super wearable, clean, all season goodness with a little bit of edgy oudiness.
