I bought an 8x8 LightWish cold press journal about 3 months ago.. as a poor old lady who’s been spending more on my sick fur-child as well as my youngest is expecting my first, and likely only grandchild…I just don’t have the money right now for a new Arches or Etcher watercolor journals. I’ve been trying out the less expensive, but still 100% cotton journals: Paul Rubens, Tumuarta, Grabie and LightWish. In the little painting I’ve been able to do with them, for my style-mostly landscapes, some animals, florals and abstracts…LightWish is my favorite so far. I DO plan on picking up another 2 Baohong 5x4 (maybe a bit bigger) “sample” books this week-18 pages in each one, 6 pages of cold, hot and rough Artist grade, they are glued on one side. I’ve already made 2 swatch books and a plien air “journal” that I take with me to appointments or just out in the park. I usually put 2 together with duct tape and I make a cover for them. For $11, you can’t beat it! I want to try some smaller urban sketches this winter since it looks like it will be my last winter in the Poconos, in the town where Winter Wonderland was written. I live in the “Historic Section” and we have some fascinating varieties of homes from saltbox and colonial, a lot of huge Victorian homes, Tudors and even several resembling “Swiss Chalets “. If we get some early snow-all the better!
Love those Baohong " test" sheets. They stay together like a journal and there's a bunch of sheets.😊 I have a couple of them from the past year or two. I paint the cover page to boot. Also bought the little Lightwish watercolor journal (picked hot press by accident) and I really like it.
I will keep my fingers crossed for the early snow! Good to know about Lightwish compared to the others too
Amazon US site has multiple sizes of Lightwish watercolor paper. People seem to like it ... there are others also. I'm wondering what makes one cotton journal better than the other??? ... Is it the sizing??? Do we just rely on reviews? Is there information on this??? Thank you for sharing, Liz!!! Watching from California, a Watercolor Gramma❤
so much is down to personal preference. I’m not sure there is a perfect journal. But I look for a sturdy cover, nice paper, a good pocket and a decent price. To be honest, I end up making my own a lot of the time.
Kolbie Blume does have a youtube channel. She has published three books about painting landscapes in watercolour.
thank you for the info!
Oh wow thanks for the review. Looks like a great sketchbook to me, and definitely worth a $$14 US dollars compared to the sketchbooks I’ve been using!
Glad it was helpful!
Im so happy to see you reviewing the lightwish products! Ive been seeing them all over amazon lately and ive been tempted. So tempted, that i bought the little 3 ring binder style journal the has the leaf charm on the closure wrap around thing. The paper in it is 100% cotton, and actually is nice! Thank you, Liz! Cant wait for the next video 😊
that sounds nice!
I really don’t like when they mix the pages so you have two different textures when it is opened flat. I also don’t like perforated pages. So, I won’t be buying this journal. Thanks for a honest review!
Doesn't sound like the right one for you at all!
Why do you seem to get everything I do? Boko Undo (now called Sumikundo)... check. The red/black is gorgeous. IIRC, they're ink in a pan. No clue about lightfastness. Lightwish journal ... check. 😊😊😊 (I have the hot press version)
Thanks for the demo. 👍
we must be on the same wavelength!
Looks like a lovely little book to me, ideal for travelling indeed... My birthday is coming up, so... 😀
happy birthday!
Nice to know about their paper being good. Thank you!
My pleasure!
No mention of the sizing on amazon nor on their website? I might have missed if you said if it was gelatin sized?
I don’t think I said anything about the sizing and I don’t know what it is. I’m sure if you emailed them, they would tell you.
@@LizChadertonArt That's why I don't remember if you said it. You didn't! Thanks for your advice, but I am suspicious of any manufacturer that doesn't happily say how their paper is made.
