  • Pastel pencils and watercolour go well together. You can readily use the pencils to add a bit of opacity or line work or detail to your watercolour or in mixed media work. This new set of Nyoni pastel pencils from Lightswish were sent to me to try out. So join me as I swatch them on black and white and share some tips, examples and techniques.
You can get the Lightwish Professional Pastel Pencils here: amzn.to/3M66Gdn (this is an affiliate link, which will not cost you anything extra)

This is really fun way to supplement watercolour and has prompted me to get out my set of pastels and have a go! Thanks Liz for another inspiring tutorial - always something new and interesting to learn and think about! :))

Thank you, Liz for this review. I bought some pastel pencils recently and it is new to me to use them together with watercolours. Thanks a lot for that tip! I will experiment with that.

Incredible art!!! I love how you make realistic art, yet use colors for such an amazing effect!!! Bought your book Painting on Canvas from a recommendation from Paul Clark, another amazing artist! Now I just have to pick up a brush again to end an 18 month watercolor break ... I'm a beginner... Thank you from a California Gramma ❤🎉😊

Hi Liz...Thank you for the review. I believe the company you're referring to is Light-Wish -- Lightwish I have a set of CarbOthello pastel pencils that I love for use with my watercolors. This set does seem to be more for portraits, as you said. Thanks, again! I love your videos!

Haaa! 007 reference 😂😂😂 ….. I thought harder pastels were for details & softer pastels for blending? These look quite interesting. Thanks for the review.👍

What would be the difference between pastel pencils and watercolor pencils, the way that you demonstrated here? I have both, and am wondering about using them as you did here. Thanks for all your videos and most valuable tips and demonstrations. 😊

pastel pencils are chalkier to lay down and will give a softer line, but if you put water on top of the watercolour pencils they will be far more pigmented

Hullo Liz, I have a few open stock PITT pastel pencils from Faber Castell and then a full set of CarbOthello‘s as well as two sets of Derwent Pastel pencils the old set I got at a yard sale and the new set which is thinner and I think a little softer as well. I have just recently(in the last 3 years) started painting with soft pastels. Coming from a watercolor origin I have found them quite different as well as difficult too! I have to search your channel for some more pastel videos! Combining them with watercolors looks like a wonderful mixture of mediums! Thank you for sharing this lovely idea with us.

The muted colors are really gorgeous, but I could see this set having the same problem as the Derwent drawing set - a lot of mid-value yellowish-reddish-brownish colors that swatch out looking slightly different, but in practical use are basically the same thing. I find that I use a lot of rather bold colors to end up achieving realistic results, so all those neutral colors - gorgeous as they are! - would probably not be useful to me. I haven't ever used pastel pencils with watercolor, but that's a great idea. I'll have to try it!
