When you twitch a lure, you make short fast rod movement to make it kind of move forward in a quick darting movement forward. Most anglers like to make it twitch two or three times before stopping and repeating. The twitching motion attracts fish because it looks like it is injured and is dying and when you pause, that s when fish usually attack. Watch twitching action at 0:40. When you jerk a lure, it is similar to twitching but you snap the rod forward a greater distance than when you twitch to move the lure forward more. This guy at 1:25 is jerking but is not snapping the rod that much more than when he was twitching. I wood move the rod tip more. His technique almost looks identical to twitch. Jerking retrieve is mainly used for the aptly-named jerkbaits. You jerk it to make it dive slightly, or swim to the side. When you pause , the lure will usually suspend motionless or maybe sink depending on what kind of lure you're using.
