      You forgot to mention that H&M makes PLASTIC clothing (all your non-natural fibers are made of plastic) which contributes to microplastics in the ocean when you wash them. And their conscious collection is made of 'recycled' plastic. They're cheap on every level.

    Unilever and Nestlé are two companies which I actively avoid. My friend did some missionary work in Africa, and told me several years ago about the baby milk scandal with Nestlé (if you don't know, look it up. It's eye-opening to say the least). At that point, I looked into other retail conglomerates, and started to avoid products from these brands. It's not just cleaning and self-care products, there's food and drink to avoid too. It's a minefield. Love your videos, Shelbi. So informative in a totally accessible way. Keep up the good work. Thank you for talking about Kristen Leo too - another TH-cam favourite of mine. Xx

    You mention that a lot of these alternatives can be purchased online. I wonder though if that's truly a more sustainable option. Ordering everything independently online contributes to packaging waste + takes a lot of energy to deliver it directly to your door (especially if it's heavier or a larger item). I think the best option is really to go local. And sometimes thats not perfect either

    • @janka2213
      @janka2213 5 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I just wanted to comment the same thing ;) I think you should always look for an option in your area and only if there is nothing AND the positive, sustainable aspects of the product really seem to outweigh the environmental impact by ordering online, it can be considered...that's at least how I handle it

    • @jennifershay8980
      @jennifershay8980 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    About the H&M recycling program - it might be true that in the US you have many options, but in other countries, we don't. I don't support fast fashion, I surely don't support H&M, but I do take my clothes there to recycle because it is the only option. The same for the idea that "you can get anything online", yeah, maybe in the US, but in Europe, when I buy from outside the EU, especially from the US, the shipping taxes and import taxes are so big, it is just not worth it, not to mention the environmental impact of shipping something overseas just for me (so to speak).

      I live in Europe (lived in several different countries) and if you can´t find something in shop, you sure can find it online. And you don´t need specific american brand. Stop making Europe look like online shopping is something new and accessible only to 5% of population here :D And with recycling clothes, you can donate to shelters, to humana, to red cross. Different organisations which make workshops and teach people how to upcycle. So unless you live somewhere under a rock, you have options.

  • @AliceAnnRose

    Each time H&M is discussed I cannot agree with "bad quality". I have multiple items from H&M, now most of them are purchased second hand, and they serve me for YEARS. When it comes to price point it's the best quality you can get from fast fashion (both design and fabric) on the market in Central Europe. I would assume that they get destroyed in dryers in US, since in Europe we just hang and air dry our clothes... The issue here is not only in the company (and I cannot deny there is a HUGE issue with fast fashion) but with how people treat their clothes.

    • @ash-vj5vn
      @ash-vj5vn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      i also find my h&m items last forever! i have one tank top that has gone bally/bobbly (yeno, where it gathers clumps) but its been deemed a "indoor shirt" (ironically used mostly outdoor in the garden) cos i split bleach on it about 3 years ago! other than that all my stuff has lasted longer than i have fitted in it! i dont use a dryer often (i say this as i grew up in ireland where my clothes would sometimes be put in a dryer for 5 mins but now i live in africa so everything is air dried) so i think you might be onto something with how people care for their clothes...

    • @Layyyy_la
      @Layyyy_la 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Yes, I think the same. I still have several H&M items from my before-zero-waste-time that have already lasted for about 5 years. • @Takeasec
      @Takeasec 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I agree... I've had some items that were kinda shitty (usually from the DIVIDED collection), but really good items from their everyday and classic collection that I've had forever. You really have to look at and feel the items before buying them.
      I also do the following things which have probably helped:
      - I wash everything on a lower temperature (usually 30 degrees Celcius).
      - I don't own a dryer so I airdry my clothing.
      - I try to not wash my clothes too often
      - I don't use softener for my clothing
      - If I have to iron my clothing I put a kitchen towel between the iron and the clothing item to prevent damage

      That would be helpful! Sometimes you need more conventional products, like for me recently. I'm currently sharing a house with family (I experienced a house fire) and they prefer conventional cleaning products and I want to respect that and I purchased Seventh Generation in a pinch but would like something better once it's gone.

      I use seventh generation because they have scent free products and I have MCS(Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). Fragrance makes me sick.

    Unilever actually started near where I live in the UK and the town is called Port Sunlight, in the same way that Cadbury’s and Rowntrees founders created homes for their factory workers so did the founder of Unilever. I often think that people tend to overlook so called ‘parent companies’ when trying to purchase more ethically and sustainably. I personally bought Love Beauty and Planet conditioner before realising their parent company was Unilever. I think that when trying to live more sustainably and consciously there is an element of decision fatigue of ‘I need this toothpaste/deodorant/conditioner right now and I do not have the energy or time to research and make decisions so I’m going to grab the closest thing to my values as I can’

    I am only familiar with the dutch 'eco subscription box' zustainabox, which I really like, because for people who are just starting on their journey to become more sustainable, a subscription box is very easy. And this particulair subscription box makes sure that a more sustainable transportation is used for the shipping of their boxes, and they tell you to pass something on to a friend if you already have the item they provide you with, or don't need/want. I do argee with you that a subscription box is not the most minimalistic way, but they can really help for people who don't have the time or resources (zero waste shops nearby).

I had been writing a natural beauty products blog, and I realized it wasn't sustainable to be receiving tons of products that I couldn't possibly use up. And almost none of them were using eco packaging at the time. Now that "zero waste" has become a thing it's nice to see people considering that aspect.

    I used to work in the Health and beauty section of a supermarket (because as a woman apparently I can't also deal with everything else a supermarket sells), and that alone pretty much convinced me to change the products I used in the bathroom, not only is the product that you use covered in plastic (which ends up in landfill) but all the plastic packaging on it before it hits the shelves also goes to landfill. Now i am slowly trying to change the rest of my life so that I have zero waste, the hardest is definitely food products, especially when you are on a budget!

Partway through your video, I ended up pausing and looking further into Unilever and the Kodaikanal atrocity. Thank you SO MUCH for not just what you're doing to help individuals make better personal choices, but also the awareness you're spreading! It infuriates me that western outlets neglected the Kodaikanal story to the point where the only contexts where anyone brings it up are in videos where people are already concerned about brand practices, rather than it being more publicly discussed so that people who AREN'T socially/ecologically conscious can learn! I sent an email to the Rogue Rocket tips address to request that they consider doing an episode about greenwashing and/or perhaps an update on Kodaikanal if there's any change to report. Thanks for inspiring people to talk about things that matter!

    I totally understand why people would like eco subscriptions boxes. I think it’s a good way for someone to try/sample products especially if they’re finding it hard to find alternatives to what they are used to using because not even one has the time to research all the different companies and products, it’s easier to get a box with a few things to try that you know are eco friendly because someone else has taken the time to research and curate the box of products for you.

So many that they have to store them in football sized warehouses! They also resell them to Africa where they are again resold (NOT DONATED) and finally unsold clothing is burned!

    I never heard of Unilever before. Could you please do a video on websites that help you tell which companies are ethical in practice. Thank you for your video upload

      if you live in the US, you can use buycott (an app) to find out what alternatives there are to products you’d normally buy :)

    I just found you and am SOOOO happy! Thank you for calling out those stupid subscription boxes. I don't know why they bug me so much but I really hate them in general. Why the heck would you want someone to send you something you likely don't need and may not even like and you have to pay for it? I do have to give credit to whoever came up with the idea because they and others are making a ton of money by getting folks to waste money. Super excited to check out more of your videos.

    Unilever is a popular name here in the Philippines for they sell a lot of their products here. Since we unfortnately can't afford their big sized products, they sell a lot of their products in plastic sachets. That has contributed to a lot of blocked drainages here, which are one of the causes of major floods here. Sometimes even a slight rain can cause flood because of that.
