      @@PrettyLuckie I stopped going to both book store and library because they don't offer anything I care to read anymore. My place of choice is the (book) antiques shop, no matter on what topic, classics or special interest, everything has been written before so there is no reason to buy it new (besides some science related topics).

      Omg I adore librarians. Ever since I stopped at my local library while working on a project in high school ages ago, researching a topic of interest that was super niche. I had no idea where to even start, so I went up to the librarian, and they were (1) so happy to help (2) found everything in the library that could help and (3) were finding me books for over an hour, continuing to find things for me the whole time I was there. From that point forward, I've been a huge advocate for libraries, especially since they have SO many resources in general. I used to work with retirees for my employer, and they would always need help with one of their benefits that was exclusively online. I told them that if they couldn't make it to our office to use our public computers, if they live near a local library, just stop in and ask for help, and I guaranteed they'd get it. They always were amazed by the suggestion and so happy that I made it

    In Australia buying boomerangs from indigenous peoples is a fantastic way to get a souvenir and support local peoples. There are some boomerang makers who have been profitable enough to be able to buy their land back! Always look for markets & small craft places selling them tho, souvenir stores are made out of the country and aren't in any way helping indigenous peoples feed themselves or keep their culture alive

    The hydropacks/water vests/camelbacks are very useful while hiking! They keep you from having a large water bottle that is shifting the weight awkwardly to a side, and the packs usually also have space for you to keep keys and other objects in them. It is a specific kind of situation they are best suited for, but for long distance hiking I think they are pretty essential. I do not think that every runner needs one.

    • @elizabethnieves-robins2823
      @elizabethnieves-robins2823 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      As a long distance runner, I agree that hydration packs/vests are useful if you are going long distance. But all you need is one. I have had the same one for 10 years and will use it until it breaks.

    • @MissieK
      @MissieK 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yeah it's one of the things that you need only one and only if you do need it. My partner runs daily for hours so after one point it was useful to have it without having to carry something else that shifts the weight and technically is a problem when running. But it is one of the things that it's only useful to a group of people not everyone

    • @paularunslondon
      @paularunslondon 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, for sure. I only recently got my hydration vest as I was increasing my distance, but it’s also great for running home from work too so that I can bring home the things I need. It also saves waste from the hydration stations during races. So I agree that you don’t need one for anything up to a 10K, but they’re really good for longer distances.

    I think anti-hauls confuse some folks 😅 at no point is she saying you can’t buy any of these things-she’s just personally not partaking in further overconsumption, and encouraging you to consider your own consumption when you’re about to click “add to cart” or swipe your card at checkout. Also, low key hoarding! Lol I LOVE books, as do many. But I absolutely do not NEED another book right now, even though there are ones I want, because I can look at myself and say hey, you haven’t read some of these yet, maybe start there first? lol it’s never personal, but I think these are great mirrors for ourselves that we often don’t love looking into! 😊 always good to self reflect!

      Agreed. They really are a good feature for running longer distances, or doing outdoor sports where a backpack is dangerous ( i also use them for rock climbing) it sounds like a weirdly specific thing to put on this list, especially as their market is quite specific, and most users will only have one. Only reason I can come up with, is that tge sustainability movement has quite an overlap with the people concerned with microplastics, so maybe they are worried about that, or chemicals leaking into the water? As it can taste a bit plasticcy. Personally I cant comment on that though, dont know enough about it to be worried

      @@breadroomghost8764 Yeah, of course, for second hand yarn I don't stick to natural fibers only. Have some beautiful mixed fibers that I have gotten via thrift stores/gifts from family. But sometimes you need large quantities in uniform colours for specific projects (we all want to actually wear our knitting, right?) and that's when I only buy local natural fiber if at all possible.

I AM grateful for the gluten free trend... it is abjectly foolish to not eat gluten if you're not suffering from an actual allergy/intolerance. It's delicious. It's higher protein and less processed than gf alternatives. It's harmless unless you're a specific kind of mutant. (You will know because you can't breathe, get off the toilet, or possibly both.) I feel like running vests are fine if you use them? Like anything else! I also feel like some of the people anti-hauling running vests are in similar circles as those who think you have to be really good at a hobby to 'deserve' gear for the hobby? Or like if you have a running vest, you're "taking yourself too seriously". Like there's a whole trend of videos of people making fun of those who use running vests for running *only* 5k, like you have to run marathons to deserve to use a vest. Anyways I feel like a running vest helps with boob bounce and while I don't always bother, it's also just practical to have something to carry your phone+keys+wallet with you, and women's clothing doesn't have the best pockets, and if you're going to buy something then a vest or a belt or one of the arm carrier thingys it's all kind of the same (and the reason I feel like anti hauling running vests is due to people putting other people's hobbies down is that I haven't seen anyone anti-haul all those other accessories for carrying things on runs).

      Lorry drivers often leave their engines running because it's consuming less fuel than starting the engine or something along those lines, maybe because so many of them run on diesel
      Diesel engine's (as oposed to gasoline engine) fuel consumption strongly depends on the operational temperature, i.e. Cold diesel engine eats fuel up like theres no tomorrow, but once it reached optimal temperature, it becomes way more efficient than gasoline engine
      Fuguring out which engine is preferable, strongly depends on how often it will be turned on/off
      Never heard of diesel engine for motorcycle, prolly 'cus the amount of fuel to make it efficient would exceed carriage capacity :))

I wish people would just realise they are becoming trapped in a financial treadmill because the more they want, the harder they have to work to pay for all the "stuff," which then steals their time away from family and friends and from doing the things they love.
    The old adage "Less is More" holds true because the less you have the more you appreciate.

    a great video again! I'm not anti-hauling books since I carefully pick every book I buy (so I won't get books I won't read) and mostly only buy from my favorite authors or buy books I can't get from the library. my book collection is limited anyway since I'm a student and don't have much extra money, but I do love supporting queer authors and authors of color. I use the library a LOT and I love it so much

    About 15 years ago, my mom bought me a dress for Canada Day (a cheap cotton sleeveless one with a maple leaf print on it) and I’ve worn it every Canada Day since then. A few years ago, I bought a glittery headband for New Years, which only said “Happy New Year” on it, knowing I’d forever wear it to every New Year’s Eve party from now on (three years in a row, so far). So the holiday clothing isn’t necessarily wasteful if you actually do keep using it, and I actually love the idea of saving a few items for only a specific day of each year. Wearing them becomes a tradition that I look forward to, just like putting up the Christmas tree or other holiday decorating. One tip, for those who want to do the same is to make sure to keep the item(s) in a safe place you will remember and can easily access when the day arrives (i.e. my new years headband is stored with a few other sparkly accessories I save for New Year’s Eve in a bag I keep with my Christmas decor, so it becomes easily accessible a few weeks before New Years).

      Agree. I make my own cleaning solution from white vinegar, water and a few drops of essential oils (optional). One of my friends thinks I'm crazy (or more likely "dirty") for not using bleach and other toxic chemicals. I don't care, I will continue to make my own. Went to a dinner at my daughter's boyfriend's parents' house and his mother kept spraying the counter -- where the food was -- over and over with Lysol!! Also, my friend's mother "burned" the inside of her nose from her constant overuse of bleach.

    Ah, mass-produced 'memories'! Some of my favorite memories from travel are honestly the photos. But I do have two lovely things I picked up in Denmark that I still use today because they are not just decor. I love the idea of going to thrift stores on holiday. The water bottle thing -- and cups in general -- it's the idea that we need choices and options each day, I think, and this fear of lack. Who really needs that much water or coffee at once, all of the time? I've had to ask myself this question. Ha.

    Fun fact. Collagen creme does not work, but the marketers are very smart about it. They have to be truthful on their labels, but they can omit certain truths. Yes, collagen is the component in the skin that gives it's elasticity and yes it would make it better to somehow but it back in the skin after it slowly breaks down. But the collagen molecule is very big and cannot penetrate the skin to get to the collagen layer. It would be better to ingest it another way for actual effects. So whenever you read the label of those kind of cremes and you see collagen anhydrous then you instantly know it won't do the wonders they promise you it will.

    I gotta say though, having done some long distance running, I can definitely see the appeal of those hydration vests. You are absolutely correct that they are unnecessary if you run more casually/shorter distances. But for long distances, there comes a point where you are running far enough that you absolutely need to bring your hydration with you to replenish on the go, and once you get up to that distance, it becomes a real pain to carry a water bottle as you run. Your grip gets really tired. It's far easier if you can find a way to attach the water to your torso. Personally, I wound up getting a small backpack-style bag and a hydration bladder that I could stick inside it. A hydration vest would have done the job too. It really depends on how long your runs are.

    Personally, while I do agree with some of these things, there's also things I really do not agree with.
    For example the candles. I have a couple and the light flickering and the smell calms/comforts me so much. I do think buying one every week just for the sake of it is way too much. But i have around 4 or 5 with each a different scent that I like to light in the winter when it's dark earlier.
    Secondly, the air scent and perfume. My dorm room smelled like mold (there's none) but the smell didnt go. Now it's gone since I started using those wooden sticks in scented liquid (idk what theyre called). I also of course use de-humidifying blocks but the smell made me unable to sleep. I didnt have a choice and its much better now.
    Same for perfume. Deodorant with scent makes my sweat smell disgusting. So I have to use ones without scent. But I also know it'll still smell unless I put on some perfume. I spray it on my clothes and not directly on my skin though.
    Third and last one I remember is the 'collecting is just an excuse to overconsume'. Maybe. But my special interest as an autistic person just so happened to be dolls. So I will buy them. Its what makes me happy and theres more harmful things to do in order to be happy in my opinion. Same goes for books. Im an avid reader. So Im going to buy books. I read in english and my library has nowhere near a good enough selection to suit my reading taste. So buying them it is (thrift store, for the same reason, arent usable either)
    Edit: About the souvenirs... it makes my grandma happy to see all of the magnets we bring her from our trips. She hasnt left Belgium in her 86 years of living and I like that she can at least experience some bits of traveling through our stories and the magnets to remember where we've been. I can assure you, her face lighting up when we bring a new magnet home is priceless. I also collect postcards from my travel destinations which I hang on my closet. Its a whole different story if you bring a whole suitcase of worthless souvenirs

I've switched to diffusers with concentrated, organic essential oils, so it shuts itself off when it's out of water. I also have a bunch of wax melts (like scentsy) so I put them on a timer and go thru them. Won't be buying more tho. Instead of Fabreze I make my own 'Room and Fabric spray' using essential oils, vodka and water. (love using it on pillows) Actually, I learned from quilters that that's also the recipe for the best spray starch for ironing, just more diluted... ¼ vodka, ¾ water, a few drops of essential oil of your choice (if desired) for scent. Super cheap and won't leave any residue on the fabric or iron. I've never bought spray starch since! (I do a fair bit of ironing too)

    When my kid was a baby i had so many baby clothes gave to me that i didn't have to buy a thing for their first year. When i did have to start buying clothes for her i would actually buy a size up for most things. It wasnt until they were about 12 that i stopped that. Using that strategy along with second hand saved so much in so much money and waste.
