In the Jewish religion we don't even leave flowers by gravesides because flowers die and symbolize an finite life. Instead we go find a rock and put that on top on the gravestone to pay respect. Rocks also don't blow away easily and it's nice to see how many people visited a graveside. Perhaps instead of flowers I would suggest painting flowers on a stone and placing that belongside a loved one? Sounds like a much more permanent idea.
I never knew this was a Jewish tradition, but my family has done this for a long time. I never thought about the meaning behind it, so thank you for sharing!
I agree, it's also super tacky imo, I'm pretty sure I've never intentionally bought anything with a rainbow on it, aside from the rainbow vodka bottle back when I was 21.
This is gonna sound really petty of me, but idgaf. I have no issues with the LGBT community aside from the community claiming the rainbow. I grew up watching old school Rainbow Brite. I like rainbows. They represent God's promise. But if I were to get a rainbow belt (for my inner kid like "Yeah!!! Rainbow Brite!!!") it would be assumed that I'm into chicks. Sure, yeah, I'll check other girls out. I'm not blind; some are quite fetching. But I'm not gay; I just like rainbows, and this bs confusion pisses me off. I should be allowed to wear or display rainbows without it being assumed to be "Pride" /end rant
Eh dont let it get to you. Personally I'm Christian and dont support LGBT but even the companies that claim to have good Christian values do it for money sometimes. Dont blame capitalism though lol. Has nothing to do with it.
As someone who got engaged recently, I hate all the bedazzled "Bride" and "Bridesmaid" clothing you can buy and the party supplies they sell for bachelorette parties. Idk about anyone else, but I've never wanted to wear a cheap tank top or t-shirt that has "bridezilla" across the front. I've never seen anyone wear any of these (almost promotional?) items outside of bachelorette parties and right before the wedding, so you know most are tucked away in closets, collecting dust, or immediately gotten rid of.
I’m extra lazy when I take things out of the dishwasher wet - I just leave the dishwasher doors open, with the racks pulled out, to air dry instead of drying by hand! :)
We do the same at my house! I honestly thought everybody did that. If there are still clean dishes to use, there's no hurry in putting the freshly clean ones away
I’m a waitress and we use single use crayons and every time I clean a table I pick the crayons up and put them back in a package even though we are supposed to throw them out😛
People use drying agent (like Finish Jet Dry) mainly because it stops hard water deposits on glass. But WHITE VINEGAR does literally the exact same thing! Just put 4oz (1/2 cup) upright in a shallow dish/bowl with the cycle. (If your glasses already have hard water buildup, it will take maybe 3-4 cycles to remove all of the deposits, or you can soak them in 50/50 vinegar/water for a few hours for faster results). (Oops, reposted this comment to edit an important detail!)
I love how passionate you get about this stuff. I totally agree, pride shouldn't be a marketing tactic and WTF is drying agent? Like if my dishes come out wet I just let them air dry. It's free and zero added work. I don't understand people.
And for peoole to not question either the motives of these corporations who try to appear some way they don't practice is ridiculous Also, to put chemicals all over the plates once eats off of and intonthe environment without question....we live in a society that the majority don't question things nearly enough. Ugh
And the balloons people release on special occasions or in memory of someone who passed away. If my family does that shit when I die, I'm gonna haunt them 😂
@@SuperMaradyWorld I used to do that up until last year but after actually thinking about it, I went and got a tattoo of letting a balloon off rather than doing it from now on
I feel like she's touched on that before. Because, yes! They're awful! All single use party supplies make me cringe! I try to at least reuse bags and tissue paper and decorations.
I saw the single use crayons far more often than the bucket of crayons when I was a kid. My parents always encouraged us to bring them home since the restaurant will throw them out...but we never used them because they were crappy crayons
It is wasteful, however it comes from a hygienic viewpoint. Children are not the best hand washers and do some gross things lol. Hundreds of children use those crayons, then enjoy their meal, likely without washing their hands in between. Buckets of crayons spread viruses quickly!
I think getting a new phone every year or two years is wasteful. The energy required to produce them and ship as well as minerals required that are mined is unethical.
Unless you sell it to someone cheap or give free to someone who doesn't have a phone, then its not wasteful. But yeah, just shoving last years model in a drawer un-used and buying a new one is wasteful.
i suggest you check out a brand called nimble, they are a portable charge brand that makes fully compostable batteries and with every purchase they send you a bag to put old electronics that are harder to recycle into and they recycle it for you. if youre curious about what its made of, its a bioplastic made out of corn
Hey Shelbie, when you mentioned the plastic flowers used at burial sites it reminded me of another suuupper unsustainable practice - modern burial and cremation. I'm an environmental science student in college and wrote a final (20 pages ahh) paper about it. It's something I think would be really interesting for you to talk about, as it is something that most people don't think twice about-even think its illegal to do anything else when embalmment/modern burial only really started in the 20th century. Natural burial with a tree as a headstone in natural burial graveyards are proven to be better for grieving families since they are more involved in the process in addition to being better for the environment for obvious reasons. Truly ashes to ashes/ dust to dust since bodies will be decomposed and add nutrients and matter to the soil. I could talk about it for a long time, especially since there are examples of people being buried in areas affected by desertification or general lack of nutrients that can be revived with the addition of lots of buried corpses. I know it sounds super grim, but it is actually really interesting since it spans everything from environmental justice and corruption in funeral industries. Anyways, if it is something you're interested in looking at, I have dozens of resources that could give more info.
in my english class last year, we had a group project to make a sustainable way to be buried and one of them (i forgot what it was called) basically turned you into a tree by burying you in a very shallow grave and planting a sapling on top of you. we also saw one that put you into a casket made solely of mushrooms and fungi (and i think maybe untreated bamboo wood for stability) and then again, put you in a shallow grave.
Hehe I did my senior thesis on this in high school! Now I’m in college studying environmental sustainability. Love finding other people who care about the funeral industry and the environment
LimeChan1 I have the same question because I resuse plastic grocery bags and I feel guilty taking them but the guilt sometimes doesn't last long because I know I will reuse it.
Yeah I use compostable trash bags! I order them on amazon and they come in all different sizes. www.amazon.com/s?k=large+compostable+trash+bags&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
A lot of cemeteries in my area won't allow people to leave real flowers/plants due to the increased maintenance, so I'll either bring a pretty rock or read off a letter or something like that. I don't often visit their graves though. Instead, I grow my departed loved ones' favorite flowers or fruits in a section of my garden, and it reminds me of them :)
I really appreciate your anti-hauls as well as the alternatives you give. You tend to bring up things that most people wouldn't necessarily have considered as wasteful, thanks for all that you do.
Annabel Batty this is a good idea!!! besides finding already-existing plastic free snacks, you could contact the brands of snacks you like and complain about plastic packaging (nicely) and suggest some other ideas, or you could make your own at home for the week! if you have a food processor, process equal parts medjool dates and cashews, and they are exactly like the cashew cookie larabars!!
Annabel Batty, we have been struggling with this but have figured out a good solution for the granola bar snacks my kids love- I found a recipe for them that was easily adjustable(so my kids can customize them to their own preference), and I just pack them up individually in some Planetwise reusable snack size zipper bags. It has worked pretty well so far.
If you're not vegetarian/vegan, you could see if there are local farmers in your community who offer their milk in returnable glass bottles. If you're not opposed to cutting out conventional dairy, you could start making your own nut or oat milk using a food processor/blender. As for yogurt, I know you can make your own at home using something like an Instant Pot, but if you're using a conventional starter, eventually you'll have to buy a store-bought package again because the starter is only good for so many uses. It's still an improvement over buying yogurt in plastic tubs each week.
Drying agent is a little gnome dressed in a suit with a briefcase full of a soft towel that works real hard and fast when you put him into the dishwasher with your dishes. 🤪🧙♂️
Why does everyone only talk about pets and wild life being scared by fireworks. What about our veterans with PTSD who can be triggered by fireworks? Just food for thought.
My cousin has Cerebral Palsy and also HATES fireworks. Until she was about 14/15, the sound used to send her into full panic attacks, even when she was indoors with noise cancelling headphones.
Also fireworks can sent off those with SPD as well. I find the really huge bangs, the ones you can feel in your chest really hurt for some reason. I also get overstimulated so I end up bouncing. (stimming) I have PTSD and spd. I went to the fire works this year, but I went to a different location. It was a lot better. The sound wasn't bouncing off of buildings
I just got my first dishwasher and someone was like oh yeah... you need some drying agent to dry your dishes so you don't get spots. I was literally like o______O what? Didn't know it existed, and I just let my dishes air dry? Who really cares if there's a couple WATER spots on your dishes?? not me LOL
I love your channel!!! I’m a hoarder learning to clean out of ALL my hoarded items!! Now a lot my stuff I Hoarded was bc I wanted to keep out of landfills by holding onto it and not throwing it away bc it still had use. But my house started bc a dumpster instead. Learning how to healing from this hoarding mentality, your videos really help me!!
Try selling, trading, or using freecycle type sites to give your items to other people. Its a lot more effective than donating so you can reduce bad feelings about getting rid of items. Good luck.
Instead of drying agent you could also just turn it on in the evening and when it is done (somewhere before you go to bed) and open it so those few drops can dry while you sleep. Dishwashers nowadays are much better for the environment than washing by hand if you fill it up all the way, so that is nice. One of the few lazy things that are actually better than the active one :)
I dont think it could be better when you count the making of the dishwasher. That ´s a lot of materials, labor, traveling, water.. just for the machine that works for few years.
@@pavcik99 as weiyinchan said, it should last quite a bit more than "a few years". Ofcourse this does depend on what kind you get. If the interior is mostly plastic (which is a lot more common in newer models) then it will likely give out at a younger age. Metal ones can last you decades
@@WeiYinChan I take care of it. But the problem is that companies make it to last only few years (let's say five or so). They put parts in it so that it breaks after the warranty expires and it's too expensive to repair it, so people just by new ones.
Fireworks... I was recently talking with a Vietnam vet who was telling me how stressful 4th of July is for him and how he basically doesn’t go outside the whole holiday period. I am sure this is also true for many more recent veterans.
We need to anti-haul fully plastic notebooks/planners....I have usually cardboard/paper/metal notebooks but I was looking for a planner for college and it was ALLL PLASTIC ALL OF THEM. I guess this can be anti hauling office type materials covered in plastic just for aesthetic.
victoria Jamilet I literally spent $7 on a stainless steel pen that is refillable. I have two of them. Plastic isn’t awful it’s just the packaging, so try to buy higher quality pens and pencils and then just buy the refills for them, still wasteful but not as bad as buying the pack of 100 pens and they all go to the landfill. Just what I do, I think it’s almost impossible to be 100% 0 waste.
@@bumblebeez1995 I can't exactly spend 7 bucks on a pen but I agree with what you say! I simply meant like products that cannot be reused that don't need to have such overbearing plastic. It's not that I get them it's just that I'm anti hauling them.
The best thing I’ve ever done is to use my iPad as a notebook. I use it daily and during the school year. It makes me incredibly happy to think about how much paper I have saved, especially as a student
THANK YOU! i hate fireworks, not only people literally burn their money in seconds and are left with all the trash but I have seen how animals suffer first hand, how scared they get, being injured and death. What bothers me the most is that people around me don't even give a damn when I tell them why I dislike them, it totally ruins my mood and don't enjoy doing anything on such holidays.
It's only really useful when travelling to certain countries where it's known that airport staff steals things from inside suitcases (not a concern in most places though).
I’ve used it a few times when flying into and out of certain airports in parts of Asia, Latin America and Africa, after I found my lock was picked, items stolen or even the bags slashed by airport staff. Never in developed countries. In some countries, it’s the only way to make sure your luggage arrives in one piece.
A drying agent reduces surfaces tension and it’s basically vinegar. You can use vinegar if you have an older dishwasher- we have a brand new one and we do use a drying agent. It reduced the drying time significantly from when we weren’t using it, and thereby reduces energy consumption. I have a very large #1 plastic bottle that will likely last me years, so I don’t feel bad about it.
Growing up, Fourth of July was my favorite holiday because my family did the huge at-home firework show and we had those little popper things and it was so fun. Nowadays, I realize how wasteful they are AND where I live, people just leave the firework trash all over the ground, it makes a huge mess. We also have people popping fireworks from about 2 weeks before Fourth of July and several weeks afterwards. It is SOOOOO annoying and not to mention I have a dog and a boyfriend who was in the marines. We definitely don’t appreciate it.
I’m a Girl Scout and I really want to spread awareness about the plastic crisis and easy ways to reduce your waste. For my gold award I was thinking about starting a website or social media account to share photos (since I’m also into photography) to inspire those at my school and in my community to make smarter decisions about the packaging of their products. I’ve been trying to get better at using less plastic in my home as well. Unfortunately, my parents do not care that much and continue to use single use plastics all the time. I’m trying to remind my mom to use the reusable bags every time we go grocery shopping though!!
In regards to the flower thing: I read once that tradition is peer pressure from dead people. I think it is really important to question traditions like that one.
Kirby P lol!! My sis is a real stickler for tradition and a real pain in the butt. I’m gonna have to use this on her the next time we get into an argument on a holiday. Thanks a bunch I owe you one 😉✌️😂
What I do about the headstone thing is go pick wild flowers on my way to the graveyard and lay them as offerings to my family. To me, its including them in your day, showing them what you saw/found on that day. (Obviously get to know some common plants so you don't pick endangered or protected species). It's biodegradable, and more meaningful.
I always forgot that in the USA cities doesn't have recycle facilities and separate bins. I'm from Italy and it's so unnerving seeing American people during the tourists season. throwing plastic things in the compost's bins and vice versa.
Something about the crayons: A lot of communities place a crayon recycle bin at restaurants. When the bin is full they are donated to schools and summer programs
What a tasteful way to approach the subject of the fake flowers! I loved your wording “I would encourage you to rethink it” rather than shaming those that still choose to participate! You’re amazing 💓
Not to mention the child labour that goes into making fireworks! Also some video requests: - How to find Sustainable Electronics and Appliances and buy these 2nd hand -Sustainable Fabrics Part 2 : viscose, rayon,etc;
I live in the Netherlands and there are discussions every year about fire works😅 Our tradition is that everyone buys fireworks, my neighbors buy it for like €200 every year and it's beautiful. Maybe in the future this will change (especially for anxious pets🥺)
Most of the drying agents, here in Europe, are done with citric acid and alcohols which they are natural and don't damage environment. If you want you can do it yourself. Citric acid comes in powder and I usually buy it in bulk because it's useful as fabric softener too.
Our "low-flow" kitchen faucet uses 2 gallons a minute. When my mil came over, she spent an hour washing dishes that would have been one load in the dishwasher. That was 120 gallons to wash by hand at that rate. My dishwasher uses 33-68 gallons depending on the cycle.
We use to use drying agent for a while I think jet dry makes it. Anyway once we switch from finish to Cascade dish detergent pods it made a huge difference we haven't used it since. Every once in a while there are certain cups with rims at the bottom so I usually have to dry those myself either way.
Great video, thank you! You should start a podcast!! I’d so listen to it on Spotify 💕 or do you have any recommendations of zero waste, conscious living, minimalism etc
I think the medicine caps are a safety concern and probably a legal issue for the companies. Dosage can be different with different measurement tools, so it probably protects the company and could prevent someone from giving a wrong dosage (especially children)
This is absolutely the reason - a lot of people who don't cook often don't have enough measuring spoons to keep them clean for dosing 4-6 times a day, and using a small table spoon (aka a "tea" spoon) leads to inaccurate dosages and can lead to kids taking too much medicine.
rinse aid (aka drying agent) is typically a mix of citric acid and food grade alcohols. its typically used to prevent spotting caused by hard water (water that wasnt well filtered and has a bunch of minerals in it). If you dont have rubber in your dishwasher you can use vinegar as a zero-waste option however vinegar eats away at rubber
So technically we live in helotes and are a mile outside San Antonio city limits. People went crazy on July 4th and there are so many strays I know that we’re scared. There are also a lot of chickens and cows in my area and I felt so bad for them. On top of that, there is trash EVERYWHERE in my neighborhood now. Like picking up your trash goes out the window with fireworks? Drives me crazy. I shouldn’t have to pick up other people’s trash.
In germany graves are actual mini gardens. No need for plastic or cut flowers at all. My grandma used to go to her parents grave and re-plant/ -design, but now she can't see well. I'm gonna do that for hers whenever the time does come because she loves gardening.
Putting a ton of plastic on a grave of a person who is already dead and wont have to suffer environmental consequences of that action, to honor their memory is the most ridiculous and ironic thing ever
And if you believe in an afterlife where ancestors pay attention to their graves, imagine how annoyed you'd be with your relatives piling all this plastic trash against your headstone!
I have 2 little kids and I have an activity tin in our car it has little books; puzzles, colouring supplies and little cars. I bring it out when we are eating at a sit down restaurant.
Fireworks not only scare wild animals but pets as well... my poor cat is so sensitive about loud noises, on new years eve, she hides herself somewhere in the house and she stays there for days! It's just horrible how much we scare animals just for our own entertainment
Fenree Yes girl! My poor friend’s dog just a little over a week ago got so anxious from the fireworks going off and had a heart attack and died! Absolutely ridiculous!
And on top of all that it can also really affect veterans. I know veterans that have both been diagnosed with PTSD and those who haven’t that don’t even go out the night of the 4th (or NYE) because it freaks them out so badly. So on top of harming the air, scaring/harming the wild animals, scaring the pets, AND harming the people that fought and risked their lives for the country we are celebrating.
I'm so lucky that there are "just" fireworks on new years eve where I live... it's so sad that something stupid as this is a "tradition", where we put so many animals and people in danger just for a few minutes of "shiny lights". I remember when I was little, I couldn't stand the loud noises and was so frightened 😥
INFANT TYLENOL!!! the bottles all come with the syringe which is important to get proper measurement but not every time i need to purchase again I don't use it all the time but sometimes It's necessary. I just get the bigger bottle so i don't have to repurchase as often but what do I need with multiple syringes for baby medicine? I can't use it for adults and frankly I just use a metal spoon for medicine or I keep an old cup. So agree!
Hi Shelbi, thank you for all the amazing videos you make. I love your channel so much and I have learned a lot from you and your community. I’m constantly in awe of what an intelligent, empathetic, and determined young woman you are. Keep it up and thanks for setting a great example. Your work is not going unnoticed!!
My grandmother was raised to participate in Decoration Day and to spruce up the headstones on the deceased relative's birthdays. She carried on that practice to my mother and onto me. I was brought up to believe that this is a form of responsibility to honor the dead. Death rituals are so personal and culturally significant, that I don't feel that it's my place to pass judgement on how others tend to their deceased - that's also the Cultural Anthropology major in me 😉 I spend a lot if time in cemeteries because death rituals fascinate me; and I've spoken to people on how they view their social, spiritual relationships to permanent markers of the dead in public spaces (i.e. cemeteries and memorials). I know a woman who elaborately decorates her son's grave for every single Christian and popular US holiday. It makes her feel like she's still caring after him, both his body and his spirit. Objectively this is environmentally wasteful; but ,to me, it's so interesting to see how people connect objects to loved ones in acts of remembrance.
If you are close enough to do minimal care (water occasionally, maybe not Texas), live plants. After Memorial Day aka Decoration Day many geraniums, marigolds, etc. in cemeteries here.
That was something I LOVED about the restaurant I last worked for. They were very environmentally conscious and the crayons were always put into a bucket and reused, and then the broken crayons were collected and then sent off to be recycled. At the place I worked at before that it was the exact opposite and the crayons were always immediately thrown into the trash when the table left.
Shelby !!!! heyyy girl. loved this video and I LOVE your perspectives. I learn so much from you!! is there anyway you could make a video explaining the things you do DO that aren't the most zero waste? or things that you have a hard time finding your way around (kinda like how you can't really avoid the plastic medicine caps if you want to buy medicine)? thank you
I totally agree that the plastic caps on medicine are wasteful, and my mom also just had the one cap we reused when I was a kid! However, from a healthcare perspective, I do think they prevent from overdosing medications. People are lazy. They aren't going to measure meds as consistently if there isn't an easy way to do it. (Also the waste created in healthcare in general is MADDENING)
Mackenzie Dwyer I agree. I think it’s a safety measure for the company so they don’t get sued. People are more sue happy these days even if they are the ones at fault. It’s the same reason that hair curlers need to say for external use only and hot coffee needs a warning label!
I love the comment about the crayons!! That is so true! One of my favorite restaurants when I was little had a huge bin of crayons and coloring books at the front and kids could grab what they wanted to use during dinner and return it on the way out. It was so fun getting to sift through the books every time
Not antihaulish but I totally get the not wanting to feel separated as a bi person myself, just living my life banging who I want and not making a big deal about it 🤷♀️
So glad you mentioned fireworks. I live in a city and even though there are city ordinances, ppl still shot fireworks in the city. The air was so thick with sulfur smoke for DAYS bc ppl shot them off for days. Since July 4th was on a weekday this year, they continued through the rest of the week and weekend....
It seems like your outlook here is pretty strict anti plastic without considering why these things may have been introduced. Just guessing here, but what if medicine cups aren't just evil unnecessary plastic and they help people get the correct measurement for their medicine. And what if the plastic piece for phone screens actually helps reduce failed installations and by extension cut down on the number of wasted screen protectors (and packaging, and freight to move more product, etc.).
I had an idea for decoration of a headstone that’s less wasteful, maybe a decorated textile piece like a tapestry similar to a table runner. Could also make fabric flowers
Drying aid I think is the same as rinse aid. It is a surfactant agent to reduce the surface tension of water so it slips off the dishes better. The ingredients are not listed however you can use vinegar in its place. This stuff is necessary if you live somewhere with hard water. If you dont use something your dishes come out with a mineral film.
If your clean dishwasher smells, 1" sections of copper pipe left in the dishwasher will get rid of it. I put 2 2"x1" sections in my neighbor's on the tines in back. Every once and a while we use fine sandpaper to refresh the copper pipe bits.
What about farmed fish? Do you know if that's as bad? I'd assume not. (For the kinds that can be farmed). Might be less comfortable/cruel, but if you're eating animals you may not be that concerned about that.
Jordan Farmed fish come with their own problems unfortunately. The fish are all crowded together in large holding tanks, making disease very easy to spread. Therefore they are fed antibiotics to keep diseases at bay. Humans eat these antibiotics and that is causing antibiotic resistance. Since there are so many fish in one space, the water is very dirty which stresses out the fish, and the pollutants get passed on to you when you eat them. Most importantly, fish are sentient, so they feel pain and do not wish to die.
I’m interested in the drying agent for dishwashers as I’ve never heard of it, but I don’t find my dishes come out of the dishwasher wet. Maybe I just leave them in there for so long they dry on their own haha
Just as an FYI, I don't know a single parent that doesn't take those crayons home. I -ALWAYS- take them home and every other parent I know takes them home. Hopefully, that helps you feel better about those, anyway. lol
Carrie Bland as a former server, I’ll tell ya right now, we threw out a LOT of those crayons (per policy). I do hope more parents take them home now though! I stopped serving about a year ago.
@@mollybrown4764 That makes me really sad. I've been taking them home since my oldest was little and she's 17 now. Even outside of the environmental implications, I just... never had the money to just NOT take free crayons if I was offered them for my kids.
I get a liquid screen protector at the Verizon store where I buy my phone. They take it in the back and they put it on and the nice part is it doesn't have a seam on it so you don't get that thing where it starts to peel off so it does last longer I've had mine on for 3 years and it hasn't even been damaged at all and because they brush it on, there's no plastic packing materials or applicator..
Okay so I think it’s time that we mention pop vinyls. Those little plastic figurines of literally every pop culture character to exist that are pieces of plastic with no purpose but to serve as fan merchandise 🤦🏽♀️ They are so mass produced and even the packaging has a clear plastic film.
They don’t serve no purpose, they serve the purpose of decorating a home, making the owner happy, or being a toy to play with for a child. We can talk about how it’s better to find decorations/toys made out of more sustainable materials, but I think it’s going too far to say that decorative/collectible/play items have no purpose. It’s okay to own decorative things.
@@eikawithac While I understand that these figurines can serve as decorative pieces and spark joy when looked, i'm refering to them serving no physical purpose in the way that they're just there to be looked at and admired. They don't move, they have no function. I do understand if you find value in having those items as I have friends that do and used to myself as well, however I now personally believe that with the amount of plastic that their production would generate and the rate at which they're being mass produced that they're not worth the waste on resources. It's not an issue that I have with the consumer owning decorative pieces, it's an issue with the manufacturer's and distributors who put no thought into the end life of their decorative products.
When I my dishwasher cycle is done I just open the door, jiggle the racks to knock some of the water off the dishes and let them air dry for some hours or over night is even better before I put them away. Works like a charm.
I’m surprised you use a screen protector. I’ve never used or needed one. My husband and daughter both have one and they’re both cracked on the corners while my phone is fine. Kind of funny imo. I agree on the crayons. I’ve never understood that waste!
digitalteacup oof, I haven’t had one and cracked my whole screen twice and now that I have one, I don’t have any cracks. U are probably more gentle/delicate with it because it every time I didn’t have one my phone cracked *badly*
Love this video! We also don't use drying agent and all I do is wobble the dishes and turn the mugs upside down and then they dry themselves. Also love pela! Xx
I am not Jewish, but I am so painting a rock and leaving it on my dad and brother's stone next time I visit. What a loving tradition.
This is such a beautiful idea!!

Me too (sort of)! I put away all the dry dishes and leave the few left on a drying mat until the next day. Who has time to hand dry dishes? lol
We do the same at my house! I honestly thought everybody did that. If there are still clean dishes to use, there's no hurry in putting the freshly clean ones away
Same here! So easy and it gets the job done just fine! I had no idea that drying agent was a thing but I sure am glad I’m not using it!
Same!
drying agent?? y’all are PAYING for something air does for FREE 😂
I assume it's alcohol or acetone. Most of our dishwasher tabs advertise with having a dry formula inckuded so you don't have to polish them after.
@@leporid257 I searched on google what it wad and yes there is alcohol in drying agent
My parents live in a rented place and the dishwasher will not run at all without drying agents
I’m a waitress and we use single use crayons and every time I clean a table I pick the crayons up and put them back in a package even though we are supposed to throw them out😛
That’s so fucked up!
Bella Curtis I keep my single se crayons lol
Bella Curtis yes girl i would do the same when i was waiting tables!!
Love this 😍🌿
Bridgetta Winchester lmao how you’re dumb
I live in Colorado and one restaurant here has etch-a-sketches for kids to play with until they leave them they wipe them down for the next kids.
Haha Yep!!!! Walnut cafe! I'm from Longmont and my son loves going there for that reason!
Cassie VXM nice! I’m in the Springs and there is a chain here that does this. Hopefully more will catch on. 🙂
Raylene Papenfus yep! 🙂

@@TheDisell Yea, that's what it's called! I loved those!
@@JinMeowsoon Limestone
I love how passionate you get about this stuff. I totally agree, pride shouldn't be a marketing tactic and WTF is drying agent? Like if my dishes come out wet I just let them air dry. It's free and zero added work. I don't understand people.
And for peoole to not question either the motives of these corporations who try to appear some way they don't practice is ridiculous
Also, to put chemicals all over the plates once eats off of and intonthe environment without question....we live in a society that the majority don't question things nearly enough. Ugh
Can we also please talk about those effing lanterns people let off into the sky???
they are so so so so bad for wild life!!!!
tangled vibes!! sorry😂 but i didn’t know those were real?
And the balloons people release on special occasions or in memory of someone who passed away. If my family does that shit when I die, I'm gonna haunt them 😂
@@SuperMaradyWorld I used to do that up until last year but after actually thinking about it, I went and got a tattoo of letting a balloon off rather than doing it from now on
I feel like she's touched on that before. Because, yes! They're awful! All single use party supplies make me cringe! I try to at least reuse bags and tissue paper and decorations.
I've never heard of drying agent, I just leave my dishwasher door open overnight, so everything dries on its own.
Pia Loves Color it’s called “jet dry” usually
Pia Loves Color Exactly! And then you don’t have to pay for *another* thing!
Right?
Wouldn’t bugs be attracted to the warm and wet environment??
@@alyssa_faith bugs usually come at night to places with food. It is as dangerous as leaving your dishes in the cupboard.
I saw the single use crayons far more often than the bucket of crayons when I was a kid. My parents always encouraged us to bring them home since the restaurant will throw them out...but we never used them because they were crappy crayons
Exactly! Like 99% wax 1 percent pigment
That too!!
same. I am about the same age as Shelbi and there were ALWAYS single use crayons at restaurants as a kid.
I’m 40 and I only remember single use crayons, never a bucket.
Cynthia Esparza and that’s why I JUST upgraded from my iPhone 6 that came out idk at least 4 years ago LMFAO
i suggest you check out a brand called nimble, they are a portable charge brand that makes fully compostable batteries and with every purchase they send you a bag to put old electronics that are harder to recycle into and they recycle it for you. if youre curious about what its made of, its a bioplastic made out of corn
Cynthia Esparza yes! Omg super expensive and wasteful. I still have an iPhone 6s and don’t know anything about the new phones; couldn’t care less!
I was planning to have my huawei p9 lite for at least 4 years, but it broke after 3 years :(
Hey Shelbie, when you mentioned the plastic flowers used at burial sites it reminded me of another suuupper unsustainable practice - modern burial and cremation.
Ooooh have you checked out Ask A Mortician here on youtube? She runs a natural burial company. Her content is great
in my english class last year, we had a group project to make a sustainable way to be buried and one of them (i forgot what it was called) basically turned you into a tree by burying you in a very shallow grave and planting a sapling on top of you. we also saw one that put you into a casket made solely of mushrooms and fungi (and i think maybe untreated bamboo wood for stability) and then again, put you in a shallow grave.
Hehe I did my senior thesis on this in high school! Now I’m in college studying environmental sustainability. Love finding other people who care about the funeral industry and the environment
Thank you for sharing! I’d love to read your paper. It sounds very interesting 😊
The youtuber "Ask a Mortician" has a video about this and she has so many good videos!!!
Shelby!! Can you talk about alternatives to regular trash bags when we have to use plastic over shopping in bulk??
LimeChan1 I have the same question because I resuse plastic grocery bags and I feel guilty taking them but the guilt sometimes doesn't last long because I know I will reuse it.
She uses charcoal trash bags I think
@@AvaLance I never heard of that. Where can you find them?
You can find compostable trash bags on amazon
Yeah I use compostable trash bags! I order them on amazon and they come in all different sizes.

Haven't even watched yet but I'm already SO excited about a new ANTIHAUL!!!!
Kristen Leo can you make a fashion anti-haul? Love your vids
A lot of cemeteries in my area won't allow people to leave real flowers/plants due to the increased maintenance, so I'll either bring a pretty rock or read off a letter or something like that. I don't often visit their graves though. Instead, I grow my departed loved ones' favorite flowers or fruits in a section of my garden, and it reminds me of them :)
gealachinion awe that’s so sweet and an amazing idea! You can also draw/paint a flower onto the rock since you can’t leave real flowers there. 😊
What an awesome idea!
I really appreciate your anti-hauls as well as the alternatives you give. You tend to bring up things that most people wouldn't necessarily have considered as wasteful, thanks for all that you do.
could you please do a video on good plastic free snacks? i struggle with things such a musli bars, yoghurt, milk etc :)
How long do the granola bars last for when you make them before they go off?
Awesome idea
Interesting take. I personally only see people talking about veterans (or anyone) with PTSD, and never really see anyone talking about animals.
🤔 interesting
And autistic people :)
Pavla Štursová I don’t know how you are using your dishwasher but it’s supposed to last more than “a few years”
@@pavcik99 as weiyinchan said, it should last quite a bit more than "a few years". Ofcourse this does depend on what kind you get. If the interior is mostly plastic (which is a lot more common in newer models) then it will likely give out at a younger age. Metal ones can last you decades
Marijke Oude Meijers we have a new dishwasher that opens on its own after finishing so it can airdry 😍👌🏻
Even being in your own home can be awful when you’re sensitive to fireworks! You can hear them inside, even with headphones sometimes.
Just what I do, I think it’s almost impossible to be 100% 0 waste.
victoria Jamilet also staples does have eco friendly notebooks. The paper is made from sugarcane and the cover is cardboard.
@@bumblebeez1995 we don't have a staples where I live, but thanks!
Can we anti-haul the plastic wrap that is used to wrap suitcases at airports? Loved the video!
Clara Davis YES!! I hate that!
Why do people even do this? I’m honestly curious. I haven’t done it and I’ve only seen it a few times.
I've never heard of plastic wrapped suitcases. Is that a common thing in the United States? Why do they do this?
Gawd I love your no BS attitude. Preach it, girl! 👏
In Europe, we would go buy flowers at a farmers market and bring them to the cemetery so we could plant them around the grave
Who else liked the cursing Shelbi? 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️Lol! Love when Shelbi spills the tea
Omg fireworks are so wasteful. I never even thought about that. And it comes with so much packaging too.
I thought people just wait for the heat to evaporate for a bit after the dishwasher is done & then the dishes are already dry. Anyone???????
I just found your channel last week and I can easily say you are now one of my favorite TH-camrs! You are so smart and kind, keep it up girly❤️
She's definitely one of my faves!!
Something about the crayons:
A lot of communities place a crayon recycle bin at restaurants. When the bin is full they are donated to schools and summer programs
What a tasteful way to approach the subject of the fake flowers! I loved your wording “I would encourage you to rethink it” rather than shaming those that still choose to participate! You’re amazing 💓
Omg yes, I totally agree with you with the fireworks!
Not to mention the child labour that goes into making fireworks!

I live in the Netherlands and there are discussions every year about fire works😅 Our tradition is that everyone buys fireworks, my neighbors buy it for like €200 every year and it's beautiful. Maybe in the future this will change (especially for anxious pets🥺)
I want to thank you for making these! I have been inspired by you and have drastically cut down on my waste this past year!!! ❤️
Most of the drying agents, here in Europe, are done with citric acid and alcohols which they are natural and don't damage environment.
If you want you can do it yourself.
Citric acid comes in powder and I usually buy it in bulk because it's useful as fabric softener too.
Another use for those medicine caps - is shot glasses 😂
My family just plants real flowers next to family members graves. Prune the plants in the spring and compost clippings. They grow back every year.
Ironically, the ad that played before the video started was about Wish 🙄🤦♀️ *consumerism is everywhereeeee*
Ugh I hate Wish with a passion!
I’m the crazy mom who takes the crayons and puts them in the (cloth)diaper bag once we are done eating out!
Not crazy! I do that too if we are given them and my kid opens it before I can snag it out of his sight. I also bring my own!
We use to use drying agent for a while I think jet dry makes it. Anyway once we switch from finish to Cascade dish detergent pods it made a huge difference we haven't used it since. Every once in a while there are certain cups with rims at the bottom so I usually have to dry those myself either way.
I anti haul any product samples sephora or any company gives in plastic mini spray bottles. Give a perfumed paper moist towlette.
Great video, thank you! You should start a podcast!! I’d so listen to it on Spotify 💕 or do you have any recommendations of zero waste, conscious living, minimalism etc
Nikki Hitchcock she has a podcast 🙂 it’s called rise of the ecopreneur
What the fuck...
I love that you are so well educated and articulate and yet so REAL ❤️
Omg hair ties and bobby pins, it's so baaaad! I switched to scrunchies and I never loose them :D
Fenree yeah my dog hid in the closet and the other dog(not mine) was hiding under the table. I hate fireworks I’d like for them to be illegal.
So agree!
We just open our dishwasher after it runs and leave it for about an hr (or more if we are busy) to let them air dry.
Death rituals are so personal and culturally significant, that I don't feel that it's my place to pass judgement on how others tend to their deceased - that's also the Cultural Anthropology major in me 😉
I spend a lot if time in cemeteries because death rituals fascinate me; and I've spoken to people on how they view their social, spiritual relationships to permanent markers of the dead in public spaces (i.e. cemeteries and memorials).
When it comes to a mom and her child it is a whole different type of mourning. You never really cope,I'd let her decorate away.
Yasss! Victoria's Secret Pink was capitalizing on pride month. I was thinking, are you serious?!!
Shelby !!!! heyyy girl. loved this video and I LOVE your perspectives.
So true about the fireworks! Im a vet tech, and we always see an influx of missing or stressed pets around July 4th and New Year's.
I love your righteous anger in this video!!!!
This is my favorite anti-haul video yet!! I hate fireworks & unethical companies using pride to profit!! 💖
Now that’s a very honest podcast! Nice to see a smart woman who sees the truth behind propaganda advertising! :)
Exactly! most companies give money to anti-gay corporations but have the nerve to put out stuff for pride
* settles in with a huge bowl of popcorn for everyone & my trusty lawn chair * 💕
If your clean dishwasher smells, 1" sections of copper pipe left in the dishwasher will get rid of it. I put 2 2"x1" sections in my neighbor's on the tines in back. Every once and a while we use fine sandpaper to refresh the copper pipe bits.
anti haul for me is people eating fish 😭 so many other marine animals get killed as by-catch

We definitely always take the crayons home haha :)
Sarah Prescott Me too! And then I save all the broken pieces and make “new” crayons out of them 🖍
I absolutely loved this video, and I hope that you share with us what you use to clean your home!
The single use crayons 🖍 drive me nuts! #bringbackthebuckets
The alternatives lists are a good idea! I didn’t know Pela offered a screen. I’ll be checking that out.
I have a drying agent dispenser in my dishwasher and I fill it with white vinegar. It helps to get a cleaner rinse.
I hate fireworks lmao. Not even cause of pets or anything, I just find them annoying and boring
But you keep them forever. Or at least I plan to keep the ones I have.
I do understand if you find value in having those items as I have friends that do and used to myself as well, however I now personally believe
that with the amount of plastic that their production would generate and the rate at which they're being mass produced that they're not worth the waste on resources.
Xx
