What a lovely man. I followed him from very early in his Australian motorsport days, and even had communication with him whilst I was working at the RAAF Museum some 20 years ago. I bought the limited-edition book about the 302 Boss Mustang, and there was a gift with each book. I got the original log book, which is tiny, and it details the delivery in the USA. Love this man.
Alan, you are without doubt a legend and a gentleman. I had no idea that you had no brakes for the last 12 laps, and now that I know I have nothing but the utmost respect.
A great book, well written Allan A very humble guy, Allan, and a racing legend . your still one of the greatest to tackle the Mountain and always will be . I remember watching your first Bathurst in the Falcon XW GT 1969 I have both 1:18 Bathurst winners, the 1970 GTHO phase II and 1971 FALCON GTHO351 PHASE III , Which take pride in my collection i have many other cars that you raced in my collection The Coca-Cola Ford Mustang awesome car .
Sadly I don't have the same story. I met Allan at a signing at Bathurst 2017 where I had a glovebox lid from an XC Falcon and a Ford flag. (which I was asked to get signed by my neighbour) I politely asked if he could sign the glovebox and flag to which he said "Fuck off". He then snatched the glovebox, turned it upside down, signed it and threw it at the table. He refused to sign the flag. What happened next still disgusts me to this day. Behind me was a young family, (a guy who was the son of a mechanic who worked for Allan's team, his wife and their two daughters who at the time were around the 12-10 year old range) before they could say anything or ask for anything, Allan looked at the girls and said "Go back to school you shitheads!" Girls were crying, wife was horrified and the guy (who was celebrating his birthday too) looked like he was about to deck Allan in rage. I lost all respect for Allan that day (and another Bathurst legend a few seats from Allan heard the commotion and said to me "Don't worry about him mate, he can be like that")
I have read the book and was shocked and surprised in some places. Moffat was Australia's first professional racing driver and gave free driving lessons to those in front or behind him.
Never realised how much he hard he had to work, to achieve his success.Always thought he was another rich guy but he was far from that. Looking back he was just tough and he needed to be. Never forget the dual between Pete (Ian) Geoghan at Sandown around 1970 in Falcon GT-HO’s (same ream) going down the main straight with Pete touching his bumper down half the straight. Geoghan eventually crashed out coming onto the main straight near the Dunlop Bridge. You know he was probably one of the hardest working most intense people in Australian Motor Racing. Brock in his day was clearly the better driver but Alan just slogged away behind the scenes at his little garage in Malvern Road and really looking back now was probably one of the best all rounder of the time.
Truth is ford would not have lost a race for 10 years straight had the bs cams not been paid to make allowances for Holden and other teams to be competitive with the mighty gtho and falcon gt! Factory specs ford from factory XY gtho 360-380 hp at 6150 rpm with a top speed of 228kph! Slr torana 5000 215 hp at 4500 rpm gov to 5500 with a top speed of 202kph! And that’s in 1978! Mr Moffat you were ripped off in Australian motor sport by cams! You and dick Johnson and GOSS and Geoghegan would never have lost a race! That’s why they changed the class to improved production killing the true Aussie car racing and in effect killing the manufacturing in this country! Holden would of either had to keep losing , and lose badly or lift their game to build a great car like ford did! I bow to the men at FORD who built these legend cars from 1967-1978! Alan you probably would of won more Bathurst than everyone! Now that I’m older and somewhat wiser I can see the absolute scam that took place in Australian motor sport! Ford should of been able to make the same amount of gains that Holden were afforded and none of this handicap / parity racing should ever have been allowed! Shame on you Cams for taking the money at the expense of Australian motor sport, Australian motor industry and worst of all the excellence and brilliance of what could of been had it been up to the manufacturers to make the improvements on the cars! Damn FORD Australia made the fastest 4 door car I. The world people with a 13.9 and 14.4 sec 1/4 mile car straight from the factory! The ratios came in 2 options thus the times set over the quarter mile. So glad I got to see it but also devastated no one pulled cams up and told them to take a hike.
I could tell you some facts of what went on with CAMS & a certain driver that scrutineers lasted about 3 seconds because nothing under the hood was homologated.
This guy was an absolute legend, whenever you watched him drive you knew you were in for a demonstration on how it's done.
2019 marks 50 years since Mr.Moffat first arrived at Bathurst.Hopefully, people will mark this occasion.

Forget winning the event - twelve laps with no brakes at Mount Panorama is an achievement in itself.
I was never a Ford guy, but I totally respected the way that Alan went about his business. Now I've got to read his book!
Always admired his professional aproach to all he did . A great steerer and had alot of mechanical sympathy for the cars . A class act !

Gmh cars were always medium sized cars at best(1st to ditch the v8 for a 6) brock became a great driver, just another opinion :)

The whole country knew he had no brakes. In reality Bondy won, but the boss paid the bills.
Is he still married to Pauline?
