Love the both of you and these conversations are getting through. I just don’t know how to bring up helping my mom from her awful 65 years of holding onto everything 😢
Years ago as a new homeschooling parent, a “seasoned” homeschool mom told me, “You’re kids are mirrors of you. If you see something in your child that you don’t like . . . guess who gets to change first?” She was right!
Not always true. My child inherited my mother-in-law's psychological issues. It's not a reflection of my parenting, it's genetics. Not everything is so black and white, so be careful before judging parents.
I watched the whole thing! Thank you! I am 17 yrs clean and sober. There is something about trading addictions, and it doesn’t have to be about a substance. I declutterred because my sister was coming to stay. Declutterring my place took a few months. And I live a one bedroom apartment. Way too many drawers in place. No rules for other people who want to send me things. No rules for myself to live by. Once I declutterred and established rules my life became so much easier.
We had an unsafe vehicle that we traded in for a newer safe vehicle last week. I was driving yesterday and the relief I felt was worth every penny we paid.
OMG, Dawn, you are such a good interviewer! Your previous professional experience as a radio host is evident. I hope you will continue to do shows like this, with interesting and articulate guests!
I've never gone back in an episode days later to take notes/re-listen until those one. The "how do you want our house to feel when you walk in the door" question is so profound for me right now. Thank you both for getting together for this podcast.
I finally, after more than four years of listening, put most if our plates and other day-to-day flatware in a time-will-tell bin. It has been 24 hours and the difference is amazing! I can’t believe I saved this for last; yes I have to wash the dishes, but it is not piling up next to the sink, endlessly. Wow!
This made a huge difference in my life when I did it also. And doing the dishes every night and put them in the morning. The dirties always in the dish washer, not in the sink. And I started wanting to cook!!! It’s a small thing and a HUGE deal!!!
@@Yemma1990 Dawn The Minimal Mom has one plate per family member. I have 2, one big and one small. That way I can only have a few dirty plates at a time. Also silverware and glasses are few. That way I usually only have one load of dishes at a time and if I run the dishwasher every night and empty every morning, it is really fast. And I put dirty dishes in the washer instead of the sink and I don’t usually have dirty dishes in my sink.
@@wewemcrhyne thanks for explaining. I dont have that few plates and silverware and dont run the dishwasher every day (we have a small dishwasher but are only two people as well) but everything is loaded into the dishwasher right after eating anyways and then put back in the cabinets - i despise a dirty kitchen! But I know I would have so much decluttering to do anyway...
We are very very minimal and declutter daily with almost no effort! Dawn’s teachings and encouragement have been a cornerstone of our journey and we are forever thankful that she shares so generously.
Same here! It’s taken a long while but I’m finally there! I have a wooden box hidden under the very back of my stairs that I pop bits in daily that are going. It’s finally now empty most of the time. When I have a small bag I walk it to the charity shop. My clothes are down to a uniform of ten top and two pairs of jeans. I feel like a weight has been lifted.😊
Thank you, we have disability and chronic illnesses in our homes that create major complexity, high demands and ongoing energy limitations. But decluttering can be very simple, I will scan a room if I am sitting and resting, to look for items that need to go. And I am comfortable throwing things right in the trash, despite environmental impact, because of the challenges I face on a daily/hourly basis. Also I am allergic to shopping which helps a lot!
Really need to hear this today, heading in for my second dentist apt to get my teeth fixed, it’s hard dealing with teeth issues, knowing they will only get worse with time, but right now it feels SO MUCH HARDER swallowing my pride and getting it done. I know at the end of this journey, I will be so beyond thankful that I chose this “hard” over the hard of not taking action.

That study about cars and happiness is interesting to me. We’ve always driven older vehicles and 3 years ago my husband bought a brand new Toyota tunda and I still feel happy every time I get in. I really appreciate it still and we’ve brought it some neat place. So I think stuff that adds value to your life brings happiness for a long time especially when you’ve had to work for it. I was feeling bad because we have 9 kids and my 16 year old was struggling trying to find a reliable car. I told him I wish we could give him a nice car and he told me - “mom, then I would be like those stupid rich kids! “😂 I was glad he reminded me that working for something can be a good thing too! Just wish I could make my kids lives easier sometimes! Just kept listening… too funny John passed on the tundra. My husband is a mechanic so we bought the 2021 before they changed it to a hybrid- he knew there was going to be complications with the change so it was a good choice to pass on the tundra John! After we pay off our house we’re going to get the highlander for me. We love Toyotas!
WoW, you are truly changing my mind ❣️❣️⁉️ I a year ago I restated watching your channel. When you have interviewed him in the past, my brain turn to hearing adults in " Charlie Brown ". I get bored and stop watching. This time I watched till the END❣️⁉️ IT WAS VERY INTERESTING and Eye-opening ❣️❣️ Thank You. Here I am making a request please make a play list with just interviews. Thank you. If you have bandwidth of course. 😂I have sinfully started to decluter beyond my chronic pain. Please pray that I can manage my pain so I can accomplish organizing my home as I decluter it too. Or the other way decluter as I organize my home.
"The self cannot hold up the universe" dang, that is so good. I recommend When People Are Big, and God is Small by Edward T. Welch. He breaks apart Maslow's hierarchy of needs... it is not about us. It's not about our happiness. Self-actualization is not as fulfilling as it appears. Thank you both for sharing this conversation with all of us!
Amen Mister! I'm around a 100 lbs overweight, my "Everything" hurts. I am on my feet for at least 6/7 hours a day at work, delivering meal trays in a Hospital to patients, on tiled cement floors, pushing heavy metal food carts, bending almost to the floor to get the trays off the bottom of the cart, dealing with people (which can be stressful in itself. some patients are nicer than others, but after working in customer service for over 38 years you adjust to dealing with people. 🤷🏻♀️😏 And I try to be a Blessing and a ray of sunshine to everyone. Even if they're complaining about how long they were waiting for their food. LoL......some days we're doing the work of Two people and other days we have enough people to be able to deliver meals faster.) Even at 57, with all this extra weight, I have people who are shocked when I tell them my age and weight ( I'm open about it) 🤷🏻♀️😏 and most patients are understanding and nice about how long it took to get their food. Many have been on the "nothing to eat" NPO diet..... some for days, and are just happy to be able to eat! But your comment about being in pain because of the extra weight....so true! And the last several years has been even worse....work conditions, finances, emotional eating has been sky high..... I have ADD and slight OCD that Clash, Clutter stresses me, but I can't deal with it so I ignore the situation and I know that deep inside, I'm reacting to the stress. I do try sometimes, but get overwhelmed and shut down and ignore it. LoL .....I have incorporated the "setting alarms for every 1 1/2-2 hours, sometimes dealing with one room......then getting overwhelmed and moving to a different room to try and keep tackling the clutter. And strangely, I'm helping another person with their Messy cluttered home! (Since I was a little girl I enjoyed cleaning my friends rooms over my own. 😂 And my childhood friend Rickie, confirmed this to my friend Wendy just recently. I wanted Wendy to not feel bad for me cleaning up her house, we both need to get "routines and schedules" to motivate us and be able to live in a clutter free home. I do watch programs like this, and hopefully it will help. Emotions don't help, lack of sleep doesn't help, poor nutrition doesn't help, no real support system doesn't help, and being in pain doesn't help either. Plan......get more sleep, eat better, try to get my "bills" under control (it would help if we got a decent raise at work. 🤨 Considering how we've all had to work these last few years.) I'm just not young anymore (not Old, but "middle" aged) And I believe that if I could accomplish these things I would be in a better "physical and mental" state of mind to make these changes. Living payday to payday has been hard, only one income and Our Economy has increased a lot, hopefully Our Union at my place of Employment will Fight for US to get a Decent Cost of Living raise!? I can handle a few hours of overtime occasionally, a few days a week, willing to work on my off day Saturday, work the Holidays, ECT ...but I'm just about 9 years shy of retirement, LORD willing, and refuse to work Two jobs ( I did that in my twenties and thirties.... sadly no husband or children ever happened. Not God's plan for me I guess. 😏🤷🏻♀️ (Although I'm still able to get a Husband as long as I'm breathing! 😁 LoL .....) Anyway......God Bless you guys! Happy Holidays and stay safe.....🤗
😊Hi Angela, It sounds as though you give, give, give to others but it is vital that you start 'giving' to yourself❤ The greatest gift you can give to yourself (and your loved ones) is by becoming the happiest and healthiest version of yourself. I am similar age and personality type but fortunately in a position to retire early (which I am) and focusing on my physical and emotional wellbeing. I have switched to a healthy diet of vegetables, fruit, fish and water and am taking long walks each day and doing light weight training and stretching at home. If you are not yet in a position to retire I urge you to at the very least, seek some advice about a sustainable healthy diet which will enable you to drop those extra pounds. Websites such as Weight Loss Resources are good for info and inspiration. You can access a lot of great information without joining. If you drink lots of sugary drinks or artificially sweetened sodas STOP this immediately and replace with water. It is important to sleep well and relax also. Decluttering your home will work wonders for your health so why not ask your friend to return the favour by helping declutter yours ? If this isn't possible I recommend thinking more about the items you love and donating the rest rather than going through each individual item (which can be overwhelming) With a clean home, healthy diet and good sleep routine you will be improving your physical and mental health greatly. You will feel more energetic, less tired, achy and hot and will save money in the long run. Please don't put things off, I'd advise beginning with your (own) home declutter as once that is complete there will be no stopping you ! Please do not allow others to take advantage of your lovely, generous personality- it is time to show yourself some love ❤❤❤ Sending love and positivity your way❤❤❤❤
Oh my goodness, I just finished listening to this. This has to be one of my top favourite interviews you've done Dawn. I had goose bumps by the end on how if we want our children to change, we need to look at ourselves first.... Tough to hear but so so true. Thank you both for this interview ❤
Thank you for making the “Taking back your home” course affordable. I just started the course. I have been trying to declutter for a long time. I was ok when I was poor because I couldn’t afford a lot of stuff. When that changed is when my problem started. I’m going to be fully retired soon and do not want to burden my daughter with all this stuff. I can’t do much about my husbands stuff but I’m hoping he sees the progress and gets on board. What I see my main problem is not buying more stuff after I get rid of stuff. It’s a vicious cycle.
In time you will see a lot of stuff in the stores as “future clutter” and you won’t want it. But the pain of decluttering the expensive mistakes also helps a lot of people cut back on shopping. Remember that anything you get out of the house now makes it better. Your daughter will be so grateful for whatever you do.
As a daughter carrying the heavy burden of decluttering my deceased father’s possessions, please, do all you can. Decluttering your own stuff isn’t fun, but the grief chore of decluttering your parent’s things is so much worse.
Dawn, you inspired me a few months ago to start with a drawer, then a cabinet, then a closet. I kept going and I love the results! Now if I can get my pack rat husband to get on board
karenhowk1455 I can relate with you. I too have been decluttering my clothes and shredding my papers. I also have been putting old college books in the book bin. My husband is a severe pack rat and he REFUSES to donate any of his stuff. My husband's stuff has taken over our living room and guest bedroom!! We can't have a sofa and no Christmas tree because there's absolutely no space anywhere in the living room.
I've been in the same boat for the last 3 years. Last night, my husband brought 16 shirts and asked me to help him pick 4 which he would keep and the remaining 12 left our closet. I could not believe it. I pestered him in the past to declutter but did not ask him to declutter lately. My side of the closet has less stuff than his. Your husbands will come around too eventually. Keep going with your stuff.
@@noemisolano4748 just this weekend I took all his stuff on the dresser and end table , put it in a tote and put that in his closet. I couldn't stand it anymore, lol
@@karenhowk1455I got sick of my husband throwing his dirty laundry on the floor and expecting it to be washed , ironed and hung back up. I decided to just kick it under the bed! I hated doing it because I knew it was there. It played on my mind. It worked though. He eventually realised he had no clean clothes!😂. It then went in the laundry basket.😅. I think it’s fine for people to be the way they are, but they should also be considerate if it’s affecting you adversely too. The hard thing is waiting for them to see that.😊
I enjoyed that. Listening to you both having a conversation about life was very relaxing. I think I may have picked up an idea or two. I'm 70 so it's a little harder to get a new view point having already "been there and done that" for a lot of things.
Schools cannot be tasked with “catching” stress responses in our children. These teachers have up to 25 kids in their classroom at a time, interacting with each other, coming from different home environments, etc. And the older these kids get, the less time they spend in one teacher’s classrooms. We, as PARENTS, are the ones who are responsible for observing these changes in our kids. When schools are able to help, it’s just a bonus. The reason we are in this much trouble is because of parents who believe “the school should have caught that”, when it pertains to mental and emotional health.
This honestly applies to everything. If it's an important skill to being a functional adult in society, parents/the home need to take first responsibility. School ultimately exists to teach routines, analytical thinking, and a baseline math and writing skillset. It's intended to be the safety net that stops generational under-education for work-related skills. A kid's ability to make major decisions, budget, work on a team, regulate their emotions, make a doctor appointment, etc, aren't in that curriculum.
@@Kiterpuss I agree. Life skills and activities of daily living are for families to teach, not schools. Schools have over-stepped and frankly, it is easy to identify the bad parents (yes - "bad" parents) because they eagerly hand-off their children to the government schools.
I've been following your advice and decluttering. I started Christmas shopping and realized that I couldn't take the clutter that these gifts were making. I rushed out and got the wrapping paper and got it done and feel so much better!!
I had family come visit from afar for Thanksgiving and I had their gifts wrapped and ready to send home with them. It's out of my home and I don't have to pay to ship them now so it was a win all around!
Amazing!!! Thank you for doing this interview. I couldn’t name what I felt…but it’s complete distrust in myself. Thank you for shining the light on that! Now to address that!
"..For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind." 2 Tim 1:7 Knowing almighty God is for us and not against us breaks all the enemies lies spoken over your life! Through Jesus we can truly come to God without fear and have our minds renewed with help of the Holy Spirit 💪🏼 fear not.
GREAT interview. This guy is so real! Loved all his points, but especially the fact that our finish line keeps changing. Getting “the thing” whatever it is-won’t satisfy us for long. Or keeping it, if we are on the fence with decluttering.
This was sooo excellent!!! Thought provoking, profound, inspirational, instructional...gave me some a-ha moments and areas of my life amd beliefs to hone in on. Thanks to you both ❤
What a great conversation. I love the part about focusing on what we have in common first. Like I'm not a religious person, I never grew up with it and i live in Ireland where the Catholic church is very prevalent but we also have such a difficult history with it. But I've always respected so much how your faith (and Dana from A Slob Comes Clean) clearly influences your decisions when it comes to the journey you're on and while it doesn't come into it for me there are other things that come into it in the same way. Xx
I love when you and Dr John sit down together. 😊 Both of you mesh so well together with your values and your simplicity and the way you have experienced things. And care you both give for us all. ❤
Your interviews with Dr Delony are some of my very favorite episodes that you do. You have both inspired me and given me skills to live my life to the fullest.
Dawn, you are such an incredible interviewer. I’d love to see more in depth conversations like this. This one really went deeper than the first step of minimalism, and it was captivating. Thank you! ❤️
I've watched Dawn for many years and have slowly been decluttering the whole time, but it wasn't until I had to move things out for new carpets to be fitted, that I looked at everything I still owned and realised I didn't need any of it so much furniture too! I finally get it, get rid of it all!!!
I love this so much. Community is the answer for staying committed. I'm currently running a 100 days of movement group for free, and it is so fun to have a bunch of us working together towards a goal. Thanks to you both for the new ways of understanding what's going on in our brain!
Great conversation. I kept thinking about the firs commandment from the Ten Commandments ….You will have no other gods before me. We chase our own gods for safety, security, happiness, etc. That is my greatest motivation right now to toss stuff. My stuff is my “god.”
This was so good and so helpful! Thank you both. Ordered the book and looking forward to diving in. There were so many wonderful nuggets of goodness in this video!!
Listening to this as I work on decluttering, and while "motivational" videos do help, I think the more gritty, real talk, tough love long form conversations help me the most. Thanks Dawn and John for a great discussion!

Margin was tough to understand until I learned about pacing and how to do that for my body. From there I have been learning more about margin and stuff has been going away. It is good.
Could you and Tom go over to Dr John Deloney's house and help him declutter? I listened to the discussion he had with his wife about his "stuff" everywhere and it made me sad that he obviously needed help simplifying his belongings. Would make a good video for us as well!!
I loved this discussion! So important for us to remember we are all more similar than different and we will have way more friends and joy in our life. At this time in my life I wouldn't have survived without the homeschool community I found with our move this year.
Wow... incredibly insightful. I may need to watch it 2 or 3 more times to let it all sink in. The 'Choose your hard' concept was profound. This was the first video where I've had to stop what I was doing to take notes. Well done, both of you!
This was so good! One of my favorite interviews. Great job Dawn and Dr. John. I love the collabs you’ve done Dawn with the Ramsey crew, I listen to their stuff every day.

My husband is a mechanic so we bought the 2021 before they changed it to a hybrid- he knew there was going to be complications with the change so it was a good choice to pass on the tundra John! After we pay off our house we’re going to get the highlander for me. We love Toyotas!
I agree. We bought house here with cash after 13 years renting. The happiness stays until today ❤
WoW, you are truly changing my mind ❣️❣️⁉️
I a year ago I restated watching your channel. When you have interviewed him in the past, my brain turn to hearing adults in " Charlie Brown ". I get bored and stop watching. This time I watched till the END❣️⁉️
IT WAS VERY INTERESTING and Eye-opening ❣️❣️ Thank You.
I am on my feet for at least 6/7 hours a day at work, delivering meal trays in a Hospital to patients, on tiled cement floors, pushing heavy metal food carts, bending almost to the floor to get the trays off the bottom of the cart, dealing with people (which can be stressful in itself.
some patients are nicer than others, but
after working in customer service for over 38 years you adjust to dealing with people. 🤷🏻♀️😏
And I try to be a Blessing and a ray of sunshine to everyone. Even if they're complaining about how long they were waiting for their food. LoL......some days we're doing the work of Two people and other days we have enough people to be able to deliver meals faster.)
Even at 57, with all this extra weight, I have people who are shocked when I tell them my age and weight ( I'm open about it) 🤷🏻♀️😏 and most patients are understanding and nice about how long it took to get their food. Many have been on the "nothing to eat" NPO diet..... some for days, and are just happy to be able to eat!
But your comment about being in pain because of the extra weight....so true!
And the last several years has been even worse....work conditions, finances, emotional eating has been sky high.....
I have ADD and slight OCD that Clash,
Clutter stresses me, but I can't deal with it so I ignore the situation and I know that deep inside, I'm reacting to the stress.
Considering how we've all had to work these last few years.) I'm just not young anymore (not Old, but "middle" aged)
And I believe that if I could accomplish these things I would be in a better "physical and mental" state of mind to make these changes.
Bless you!
😊Hi Angela, It sounds as though you give, give, give to others but it is vital that you start 'giving' to yourself❤
The greatest gift you can give to yourself (and your loved ones) is by becoming the happiest and healthiest version of yourself.
If this isn't possible I recommend thinking more about the items you love and donating the rest rather than going through each individual item (which can be overwhelming)
With a clean home, healthy diet and good sleep routine you will be improving your physical and mental health greatly.
Thank you, Dawn, for introducing us to John Delony! I appreciate this conversation so much! So helpful!
@@jamieandkeith thanks. I know and I am working on it.
Love you Dawn, thank you for your input ❤
Absolutely true! Thank you for the reminders.
Dawn, you inspired me a few months ago to start with a drawer, then a cabinet, then a closet. I kept going and I love the results! Now if I can get my pack rat husband to get on board
You’re preaching to the choir, lol!
karenhowk1455 I can relate with you.
Two of my favorite podcast personalities talking to each other!! So good!!
I love how honest he is. It’s so encouraging thank you for talking with him
Choose Your hard!
I absolutely love these sessions with you and Dr. John. Forthright conversations. Compassionate observations. Thank you!
Y’all do so much good in this world, and we love ya for it.
I truly appreciate the raw honesty in this. ❤️
Amazing!!! Thank you for doing this interview. I couldn’t name what I felt…but it’s complete distrust in myself. Thank you for shining the light on that! Now to address that!
Dawn & John, Great interview! We dont have kids but we absorb things from each other as well. Awesome job! 😊
"..For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind." 2 Tim 1:7
Knowing almighty God is for us and not against us breaks all the enemies lies spoken over your life! Through Jesus we can truly come to God without fear and have our minds renewed with help of the Holy Spirit 💪🏼 fear not.
Yes!!
Amen !
Xx
I absolutely love this segment!!! Thank you so much!!!
I can't tell you how much this was needed by me right now. I appreciate every time you challenge me. Thank you.
Great conversation with lots of take-aways! Thank you for sharing this!
I greatly appreciate this! Not what I was expecting, but BETTER! Thank you both! 😀🌺🎸🎸🌺😀
Dawn, you are such an incredible interviewer. I’d love to see more in depth conversations like this. This one really went deeper than the first step of minimalism, and it was captivating. Thank you! ❤️
Thank you for sharing this!!! I love when you two get together to chat.
What an excellent conversation. I'm taking so much valuable advice to put into practice from it. Thank you Dawn and John.
I've watched Dawn for many years and have slowly been decluttering the whole time, but it wasn't until I had to move things out for new carpets to be fitted, that I looked at everything I still owned and realised I didn't need any of it so much furniture too!
I finally get it, get rid of it all!!!
Cleaning up my kitchen while watching this.
Really appreciate John's openness
You have NO idea how Much I Needed this video and ALL the WONDERFUL information!!! Thank you so much for putting it out and sharing!!!
This was amazing. I really enjoy learning more about the psychology of "less vs more" and how "stuff" is based on other issues. Great interview!
I love this so much. Community is the answer for staying committed. I'm currently running a 100 days of movement group for free, and it is so fun to have a bunch of us working together towards a goal. Thanks to you both for the new ways of understanding what's going on in our brain!
Absolutely Fabulous information
I’m sooo thankful for you Dawngirl!!!!
I LOVE you Dawn!!! Thank you for everything that you do. Blessings to you always ❤
Totally agree! Great points on anxiety and clutter. It’s all static…wow!! Yes!
All I can say is that I love this conversation - my favorite of your podcasts so far
Love this! Two of my favorite people on TH-cam! What an insightful, real, and deep conversation! ❤
I love your interviews with Dr. John! Thank you! I especially enjoyed the part about managing children’s anxiety. Very helpful 🙏🏻
This was so enlightening, thank you.
You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for the constant encouragement and push to keep going! Blessings!
Listening to this as I work on decluttering, and while "motivational" videos do help, I think the more gritty, real talk, tough love long form conversations help me the most. Thanks Dawn and John for a great discussion!
My two favorite TH-camrs in one video! I love when that happens. It feels like you and John are dear friends even though we have never met. I reference you both often when helping friends. Thank you both for your wisdom!
I clicked on this video on a whim and I am so glad I did. I needed to hear this, thank you.
This was incredibly thought-provoking and convicting. I clicked on the video on a whim, too!
Thank you so much for this !!!
Dawn, I can't even count how many times I use your ideas and your quotes, when talking to friends and family. You are such an inspiration. Thank you so much for all that you do!
Margin was tough to understand until I learned about pacing and how to do that for my body. From there I have been learning more about margin and stuff has been going away. It is good.
You look so gorgeous! Just glowing!
Really appreciated listening to your guest. Great conversation.
Never usually comment, but absolutely loved this interview.
Very interesting and gave me lots of food for thought.
❤ from Scotland❤
Love this!! I ordered John's newest book before this video was even done. Thank you for introducing him to us!
Wow... incredibly insightful.
You read the Desert Fathers! Awesome!
I don’t normally comment Dawn but this is amazing ❤
Wow, great discussion! I just ordered Dr. John's book.
Thank you both, for such an insightful session!! I’m way past my bedtime, but couldn’t stop from listening!!😂 Looking forward to reading John’s new book!! Blessings to both of you and your families ❤
Thanks for keeping me company while doing the dishes and straightenjng up the house.
Brilliant video ❤
This information came at the exact right time. You both really have the greatest jobs! God bless yall (in my best Memphis accent). Much love and Merry Christmas!!
Awesome! Love the interview and so thankful for you, Dawn!
Oh dawn how you keep to amaze me with how you just grow and grow as a human being. This conversation was awesome- well done!
