I have watched this whole video. I am trying to work up the courage to re-organize my Store room. It's 4 ft deep and 20ft long. It is my attic and basement all folled into one space. It houses my upright [apt. sized] freezer two 18" x 4ft steel racks at dry food overflow cabinet and mop and broom and vaccum 5ft stepladder etc. It's got everything in it and it has become my enemy. Iplan to empty the whole thing into my bedroom to start from scratch. Thank you for being such a good motivator.

I just want to thank you Dawn! I just emptied out my storage unit after paying a monthly payment for years. Some of it was painful like my mothers stoneware and (gulp) hundreds of $ of yarn and fabric that I wasn’t using. But I calculated that by getting rid of the unit, by retirement if I want to knit or quilt then, I will have saved enough to buy it all again and then some. And no more guilt with not using mom’s stoneware. ❤ love you Dawn for everything you do!

Yay. As the youngest daughter in my family I inherited 4 sets of China from my mom, grandmother on both sides and great grandmother. We have five daughters so I saved a teacup and saucer for each of them and myself. Then we USED all the plates, bowls, and cups daily. Is it all broken and gone now? Yep, mostly because our girls are still small. But did they love using it and don't I think that my great grandmother would LOVE that her five great great granddaughters used the same dishes she used...YES!

I worked the hour along with you and decluttered/straightened up my craft room. I had 1 black bag of trash, a bin of donate, and some time will tell items that are going to be stored in a utility closet. That's for another time! I've tried so many other methods to declutter (including KonMari). I ALWAYS had lots of limbo piles/boxes/etc., all over the place afterward that I didn't get back to to finish due to illness, ADHD, life events, etc. I always associated making an in-between "mess" with decluttering.
I've binged some of Dana's no-mess process and 1 Hour Better videos to get a good feel for the method. I did just a little bit the other night in my pantry area. I loved it!
I explained this new process to my husband and he likes the idea of no mess and permanently/completely dealing with the one item in your hand in one go with no mess afterward. Tiny one-by-one accomplishments are way better than a mountain of in-beween piles that leave a bigger mess and no sense of accomplishment.

I wish I could do that too but my problem is most of the things that should be put away don’t have a “home” yet because the “home” needs to be carved out somehow. I’ll get there someday 😩

@@cindyhenry1410Sometimes it is very quick & satisfying to pick a drawer or spot inside a cabinet to declutter if you have 10 minutes to spare. That might clean out some future homes for stuff?

      @ChrissyChrissyChrissy333 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cindyhenry1410 Only if it makes sense to do so, start putting all of the homeless items together for now, as though it were a category of its own; then proceed to carve out space when given the time. Start small, and with the easiest category / space first. Maybe 10 minutes each day for the first week, then build on that :)

I agree with this video 💯%! I just turned 60 a month ago. Over the past year I've really been downsizing/decluttering. Im in the mindset that says "would my children/grandchildren have to figure out what to do with it?" I'm a quilter
No one else in my immediate family has any desire to sew or quilt. I've decluttered so much of my unused supplies and fabrics. My kitchen gadgets....who would be using them when i pass? Probably no one. So they've slowly been going away. I literally only keep something that is a gift from my parents or my immediate family. My house isn't spotless by any means but chores that use to take hours daily to complete only take an hour now. I put my husband on a clothes diet. He's a hoarder of crap clothes. His mindset is "i need clothes for working on cars and doing messy chores". He has a uniform service at work now. He doesn't need 35 work shirts! So he's on a limit of 5 pieces of clothing for each category. I filled a construction size garbage bag with ratty clothes of his! These clothes weren't even fit for donating. But I did the same for myself. I didn't really have that many clothes because i mostly have work out clothes. But im a gadget junky. I have to keep myself dialed back on that.
But this video is so important!!! Seriously . Do we want our families to have to deal with our junk when we're gone? Isn't really very thoughtful is it?🤔

I often watch one of these videos from either Dawn, Cas, Dana K White while I make breakfast and wash Dishes . I should’ve kept track when I started making sure my kitchen countertop was always wiped and sink always cleared. I start my day by emptying the dishwasher if it is clean or returning what’s in the drain board back where it belongs. My day with a healthy habit has actually help me lose weight I guess it is kicking my cortisol back in line and eliminating the stress of this mess holding over my head. I organized my craft room the other day and started purging craft supplies I don’t plan to commit to this year. Tomorrow I may tackle my office or repair my swing machine.

I live in a smallish home. I do have a basement. So I have been doing the "carry the stuff where it belongs now" thing. It works! I have been cleaning the sewing room (long story) and now moving my "office" into the house as I am starting a "business". Lots of stuff that needs a home. "Where would I look for this?" I am putting items where I would look for it. Great video. Thank you! I did stick around. I know the overwhelmed feeling in the office. And I have started "decluttering" my desk not realizing this was a good brain reboot, but it is. Thanks again!

Great video. I have always wanted someone to be around when I clean and do chores. I like to hear that I have done a good job and that it looks great. That is what my mama always did with me after I finished something I was working on. That started when I was thirteen and I have never liked doing things alone since I got married at 21. My girls fuss because I am not as tidy as I use to be and I try to tell them that I like body dubbing but they won’t listen. Now I am 75 and have 54 years of stuff to declutter. Started last year but still have a lot to do and with several different back and leg issues, it is so hard to do. They both have really neat and clean homes next door to me.

I had her completely clean out her room as her brother will be taking over her room and she doesn't plan to move back. All the things she didnt want ended up in the living room. I was just now able to go through it and bag up donations, recycling, and trash. Our condo is really small for 3 people and we switched their rooms 2 days ago creating an explosion of items in our living room. Finally getting that under control today and feeling ahead of the game for her big move to college in 3 weeks. Thank you for your videos! What I've found for myself is that if I'm having a hard time getting started a quick win (or wins) helps me restrengthen my decluttering muscles which starts a wonderful loop of feel good, declutter more. Start small and go from there. My biggest hint? We all have lives, committments, constraints, etc. Our goal is to find a less cluttered, more peaceful home (spaces in general) HOW we get there is so dependent on our individual lives and personalities. It took me a LONG time to give myself permission to declutter in the way that works best for ME. I am so thankful that you and other decluttering content creators are willing to share your best practices so I can create the one that works best for me. Thank youl

I’ve just downsized to a 24’ travel trailer. Even with all that I have donated and shared with family (keepsake stuff) I am still sitting in the middle of a mess that feels every bit as cluttered as what I got rid of ! Hoping to work through this with you tonight. I’ll keep you posted. Lol

This is so great! I'm actually in this right now. We are having our floors redone so we ordered a POD and have all of our stuff in it. Once the floors are done and we are ready to unpack our house. Everything is being gone through and I am using these tips to help me. I'm excited now. I'm thinking we will be able to donate and/or get rid of 70% at least. Yay!!!!

I "body doubled" several of your videos over this weekend and so far I've gotten 4 kitchen sized trash bags of donations out and at least 3 full kitchen bags of trash out of my office. It all came out of bookshelves and bins that I absolutely dreaded digging into, but it feels SO MUCH BETTER! 🥰

So glad I joined you while I was decluttering/organizing my laundry room. You got those cute wood desk organizers and the decisions you verbalized to not use them spoke to me. I had gotten some containers for this project and they just weren't what I ultimately wanted but I thought I "should just use them, make it work.." When you said you only wanted to do this project once the way you like it..exactly what I was feeling. I took them back today and got what will really work. Thank you for thinking out loud and also the FranklinCovey organization tip.

You identified exactly why they are called Boxes of Doom: over time we forget what's inside and for the most part we tend to get it in our heads that something really important or difficult to process will be in there! That represented SO much of our closet storage for me when my husband and I were somewhat newly married and living in a smaller apartment.
Back then it was Marie Kondo who first spoke what was already in my heart and mind (just like you when you first heard Joshua Becker!) -- "Jessica, you don't have to keep and cram and 'organize' all this stuff into every nook and cranny!" With that I decluttered as best as I could as we packed up to move into our current place, leaving no box unidentified!
Since then what I've begun to notice about myself is that while I prefer everything hidden behind a door or cabinet, when I open said space I absolutely insist on being able to either see into a container, or to have it minimized enough and labeled in some way so that I could tell you everything that's in it, and I'm never inclined to avoid a box because of the mystery inside 😁
Still a work in progress but I am so thrilled by how far I've come in the two and a half years since I started this journey. I have now been dusting regularly, wiping down counters, doing a load of laundry almost daily...very soon I'll be graduated to cleaning and wiping down my windows and slider door just because! haha
Thank you thank you Dawn for enabling me to transform my life. You are a precious blessing ❤️🙏🏻

"Boxes of Doom". - what a great description!
Dawn, thanks for suggesting we think of these as "time will tell" boxes. I recently went through a stack of old paperwork that, before I started, seemed daunting. Yet, as I went through it, I found a lot that I could discard. It was daunting, at one point, but over time, the pile had become what you described... a "time will tell" stack of paperwork.

Im so proud of myself. I heated up dinner, ate it, and threw away all the leftovers bc it was chicken. Then i washed all of today's dishes a n d pots. Made my drinks for going to bed. Took a couple things where they should go, and decluttered 20 items out of my sunroom. Im going to get ready for bed, decluttering as I go. Ran the vacuum in the bathroom . All this while still in a cast with a broken foot. I'm happy with what I could accomplish esp. Not feeling well. I love my roller. It helps me throw away old bills. Love the sitting area and the artwork. Thanks for being my declutter shadow!😂

Yes I played along and used your video for body doubling, I was able to clear all the floors of an overwhelming space. My art studio became the catch all for everything that did not have a home from around the house when I was ill. And once I started feeling better I would just stare in the room get overwhelmed and then walk away. During the video I was able to remove trash, remove the dont want anymore items, remove all the well meaning storage containers that made their way into the room to be helpful and labeled the box for the organizing stage and put them on the garage shelf ( these will be donated if I get to that stage and they are not needed). I made category boxes to sort later even though I know this isnt really recommended but I need mental time energy to sort each craft category. But still did a preliminary sort as it went into the box. worst case I could at least store it if I am unwell and it at least makes this space usable again. I spent an hour an a half which is more than I have been able to do in a year in this room and I feel so much better and less overwhelmed so much to go but better! I think I will be able to continue and am excited about the possibilities in here again. Thank you.🥰

I've been watching your videos and loving your content for a couple years now. You and the decluttering power team on TH-cam have made such a difference in my life, and I am so thankful!! I grew up in a hoarded home. Thank you for helping me give myself permission to let go and use my home for living, not storing.
I still have some struggles, but your videos are so encouraging!
I do have one "disagreement" bit its only my personal opinion. I love the idea of putting things away right away, but if I'm cleaning an area and walk away, I end up distracted and doing something else. I did find using a basket for putting everything that goes in another area to put away when I'm done keeps me on task. Yes, sometimes that basket becomes a "time will tell bin" (not a DOOM pile, even though it is), but at least i got the initial task done. Im really learning to be ok with "good enough for now is good enough." So hard because of OCD and perfectionism. I wish i was a cricket, but im a ladybug. Hubby is a cricket that piles if he can't organize ideally. Thank you for some fresh inspiration to start the new year decluttered and tidy!! The "body doubling" thing is awesome!

I'm catching up with some of your past videos. I saw you clean your Monica closet today and got inspired!
I eventually dusted the walls in the living room while watching that one. Then i tackled a bit of my closet while listening to this one! Thanks for the body doubling! It helped that i had already decluttered my clothes and was just going through the storage items in there. I let go of a black trash bag full of stuff and i can get into my closet better now! There's still stuff i can let go of but you are making a wonderful difference in my life. Thank you! God bless you and your family.
ETA: I did stick around to the end even though I finished before the video was over.

I ended up going through eight photo albums that belonged to my mother. Only 18 more to go.
