It’s interesting how your two backgrounds behind where you’re sitting really show your two very different styles. Cass has so much neatly organized stuff and Dawn has a blanket over her chair and that’s it. Decluttering can work for anyone no matter what clutter threshold you have. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, ladies. Love your content!

Dawn is too cheap to buy anything. Gets rid of all her kids possessions so she can say she's a minimalist.

A new habit I have adapted when I'm out shopping is " where will this things home be". I am already thinking about the things in my house when I'm at Target or Walmart. I used to LOVE impulse buying, not now, since I think about the effort of finding it a home!

What helped me become more of a minimalist was dealing with my parents' possessions after they died. I had to clean and sell my childhood home in two weeks. My siblings and I kept 1-2 momentos. My sister did keep the family photo albums. I donated everything else. At that moment, I realized that I didn't want my own children to have to deal with my stuff.

Right there with you. My home and paid storage facility has mental and financial stresses. My in-laws& my single aunt passed away and we cleaned refurbished & sold their homes., My son's extra stuff From his apt. Then our daughter & family moving in with us. 7 of us and 3 kids toys....I'm now on meds!!!😎

I'm with you. I was never much of a hoarder, more of a purger. But then I had to clean out my Mom's house of 40 years to move her to assisted living. Both my sister and I living out of state. We had to do it in a few weekends. Then from assisted living to memory care cutting her living space by more than half. I've been trying to reduce everything gradually over the last 18 months. She passed away a month ago and fortunately, her apartment wasn't more than a few hours work.
I started going minimalist 5 years ago and will never look back. I refuse to put my children through the same experience.

My youngest daughter started following you gals over a year ago and her house is so easy to babysit at now! Even if cousins come over and they get into every toy, it takes not even 10 minutes to clean it up because everything has a spot, nothing is crammed in anywhere so it’s easy to find. It’s easy to help her with laundry. So minimal -icing has actually helped her out that way, because when I am over there it’s super easy for me to help with laundry, dishes, no frustration over things falling out of the cabinet at me when I’m trying to put it away lol

Something that has helped us with bathroom organization is different, but may help someone. We have a tall wooden shelf (5 shelves that look sort of like a crate, and you could nail crates together for same thing) that one could easily make. On one shelf, it has washcloths and hand towels folded and put in long slim baskets. It looks nice and hidden. On another shelf, we have towels, another has baskets of use up items such as shampoos, dental, etc. This really helps hide the clutter and it looks nice. We don't have a closet for that and vanity can't contain it. It works well and it is not what you would usually see in a bathroom, but it is so functional now. Getting rid of excess too.

Excellent!!👍🏻I have learned SO much from the 3 of you! The SYNERGY of each perspective has given me hope! Dawn introduced the idea of inventory! I wasn't a slob , I just had WAY more than I could hide in my drawers and decorative boxes (Yes, Cas helped me understand my inner ladybug 🐞 💙 ! thank you Cas my ADHD "sister"! )! And in this stage of the progression of my disability, Dana has made a world of difference! I can't handle huge piles of stuff 😫! Unless I hire help (which I do when I can), I need to use Dana's system for lessening my inventory without making a bigger mess. I have limited energy and mobility so 🤷 her methods completed the trio of what I needed to move forward and believe in myself! Also, a SPECIAL expression of gratitude for helping us work through sentimental items! 💕

Listen forget the Cupid shuffle- I have done the Clutter shuffle for too long. I was so frustrated when despite having all the bins and totes…ALL the things for things. I hadn’t considered the FACT it was the AMOUNT OF THINGS! Since January of 2023, I have learned so much and have really grown my decluttering skills muscles and habits!!! Thank you so much for all of your help and transparency and genuine kindness! The hamster wheel is no longer spinning and the transformation from 20 years of a dumpster fire of all the feelings that go with allll the stuff is absolutely incredible!!!! I’m no longer mortified about people stopping by and the peace of mind and ease of doing anything is nothing short of miraculous! I’m now equipped with black contractors bags and donate boxes to tackle the basement. I’ve been working on the upper level and to think it all started with my junk drawer. Asking myself “Is this serving us in this season?” Labeling has been absolutely key! I’m super excited about the progress we’ve made as a family and individuals since wrapping my mind and heart around minimizing the inventory in our home! I was terrified in the beginning and now I’m actually feeling excited about this journey!!!

Different personalities…styles…levels of clutter…states of mind…ages/seasons of life…even life traumas that perhaps got us into our current situations…it ALL, somehow, relates!
I’m guessing that you guys decided on naming the course “Take Your House Back” because “Take your house back, take your life back, take your time back, take your voice back, take your courage back, take your bank account back, etc…” was too long for the title!
The “No, sorry!” I can now say, guilt-free…the opening of my front door without embarrassment…the money I’ve saved…are just a few ways my life has changed!
    You three are POWERFUL!

You two ladies have absolutely changed my physical and emotional worlds for the better. I am gaining momentum and really feeling everything you speak of...as I listened I decluttered a cabinet and drawer in my kitchen. Gather two grocery bags full of glass jars, water bottles and insulated lunch sacks to be re-homed. I didn’t realize how many glass jars I’ve saved and certainly reuse, but the 10% goal I had turned into 60%- we don’t need all this for ourselves!

In January I started a plan with Rachel from Nourishing Minimalism. She encouraged her viewers to get rid of 2022 items in 2022. She made a printout available with that many boxes to check. I have decluttered 850 items at the end of April. One third of the year gone and over one third of the way there. That is doable for this Death Decluttering disabled person.
I could never do a marathon declutter in my condition. God bless those of you who can.
    Good luck! 🙂👍☘️

I just mentioned the two of you on Ceri the Crafter's channel, NOT KNOWING that you even knew each other. Then, the very next video I came across was THIS ONE!! I love hearing you both talk, and am writing down your WORKABLE and USABLE strategies. I've been watching the both of you for about two weeks, and I'm making slow but sure progress. I'm a Ladybug also and the tip that helped me the MOST is to grab a trash bag and just look for things that are trash. That has been SO helpful!! I also realized that I too was just "reorganizing," as opposed to decluttering, and that has also been a huge eye-opener. So far, my linen closet is about half done, just from throwing things away. Next will be getting rid of bleached or old towels and wash cloths, and having fewer or those and fewer sheets and pillowcases. You helped me realize that I don't NEED ten sets, especially since we are empty-nesters! Anyway, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU so much for helping so many people live a better, calmer life!

For everyone decluttering it is an on going process. You do a closet once and your brain just can't separate from things. Time to move on to an other part of the house and three weeks down the road look at what is in there again and see where your brain is that day. I have been at this for over two years. My children are in there 30's and I still have stuff that I was keeping for them or future grandchildren. Watching Cas has made me rethink things and allowed me new vision to the "stuff". She gave me permission to either give it away, sell online, or throw out. All I can say is take the weight off of your brain. Simplify your life. Less unimportant stuff will do that.

LOVED THIS! I'm not sure if someone already suggested this in the comments, but I saw a question about where to take items you no longer want. I've used my community Facebook "Buy Nothing" group a lot. If you have one, it's great! Post things as you pare down, and people just pick up from your front porch. So easy. No packing up your car. These things literally disappear off your front porch!

If we daily declutter for five minutes it makes a huge difference. Doesn't seem like it at the time, but it does. The best way not to have clutter is not to let it start in the first place. Finding an easy way to put it away is good too.

To make long story short. I took care of my Mom right until she passed. I lived with her, but had no says of how she took care of the house. Now I bought the house and its a hot mess. I de clutter about 20 inches at a time. That means de clutter then organize and wash down. Once everything is in its place. I will wash it down again, and then paint. The organizing tips have been such a help. I just wish it wasn't this bad. I mean 60, 33 gal bags of clothing that went to Good Will. That had tags on them. 6 to 8 cases of plastic containers. I mean 22 x 18 size boxes. Plus about 150 boxes of what ever. I had gotten rid of. But at least my Mom was a neat hoarder. But I am listening to all your advise. To get me threw this! Thanks

YOu are already an inspiration to me. I started with my garage ...got pushed a bit but it got done. I filled a mini Skip with trash and it was liberating. No not all completely done as I find after a couple hours I got really tired and just wanted to get the junkk out. In the process found someone who came to see me as they want all my left-over fabric (I have a LOT as I make mascots and have to keep samples of fabric and colour) The craft stuff is a problem, but for that I have 12 big platic drawers that stack on top of each other and I put wood planks on top as the sewing surface. But they also need a clean-out. My daughter also suggested get the garage sorted and then when things in the house cannot quite be thrown out, take them to garage to sort later. BUT loads of trash bags are leaving the house. I also have tons of tols and while sorting the garage, found stuff I have been missing for um, years! It is alike a snowball effect, once you start, it encourages you to continue. I am recovering from cancer, so my energy levels are still low and I have to pace myself and that is a bit frsutrating as I always had loads of energy (basically why the house got into such a mess tha last 2 cancer years) But in remission and moving forward and getting my house back

If you impulse buy something, and realize when you get home that it was unnecessary, take it back! Don’t hang on to an item just because you bought it. Returning things that you truly don’t need isn’t a problem. Storing things you don’t need isn’t a solution, its a symptom of the problem of having too much.

  • @kristinavorkapits2864
    @kristinavorkapits2864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The way I think about purchases is: Unless you are able to return something for a refund, that x amount of money is GONE. Holding on to an unwanted item because you “don’t want to waste the money” doesn’t make sense, because that money is already wasted, whether the item is in the house or in the bin. And the cost of things is not only monetary, but they can also be costing us in joy, relaxation, space and peace of mind. So, not only keeping an unwanted item will not bring back the money you spent on it, but it will also keep “asking” things of you, and costing you in ways beyond the $$ value. Not sure this makes sense the way I’ve worded it, but I hope you get my drift. 😜

I got magazine containers from Dollar Store, screwed one to each under sink cabinet door on the inside. One side holds brush, comb, product. The other is perfect size for blow dryer and straightener that I use everyday. Curling iron and blow dryer attachments are in a basket under the sink. The stuff I use every day is super easy to get out and put away.

One day, I thought I'd get rid of "a few" things in my cupboards that I didn't use. I amazed myself by filling my entire kitchen table. Since then, I've gotten SO much better in the stores by thinking, do I need this? Usually the answer is no. It took seeing that pile to realize I've been a collector of useless stuff.

It is incredible to me that you are still expected to have a clean and tidy home, just like back in the time where women were housewives, and taught how to clean from birth. And yet, SO many people today are struggling to keep things tidy. Why is that?
I think it comes down to a combination of factors: We have a higher income, and prices and quality plummeted. So we buy more things, because we can afford more things. At the same time, we have less time because in most households, both adults have to work fairly long hours, which means less time and energy to keep things clean and tidy. But I think the biggest reason is, no-one is actually taught how to clean or tidy.
Think about it. When I was a toddler/child, my room could get pretty messy. But when we had to have company over, I was told to 'clean up my room'. Which, at that age, I knew meant to make my toys 'not visible'. The problem was, no-one had taught me a system to tidy, or how to maintain it. So for me, drawings went under the rug, and everything else was shoved into a closet, or under the bed. In totally random places, no categories whatsoever. But then my room was 'tidy' because no-one could see my things, right? And as soon as the company left, things came back out, because I was looking for specific things, and had no idea where it was.
As hilarious as this child logic is, it is actually no wonder people struggle as they get older. Of course they start to understand systems to a degree as they get older. But with the ability to buy things, their development of self control in terms of what they buy, and noone teaching them about systems and decluttering - or the habits of when to do it. How on earth do we expect them to just automatically know this?

A word of warning about using praise to encourage letting go of items. If the ultimate goal is for the child to WANT to let things go, because they are motivated from inside themselves to do it and see the benefits of living simplified, focusing on external motivation can undermine that. The praise teaches your child that the reason to let things go is to make mom happy and get all the praise good feelings, which they love to do. That praise won't always be there, and mom won't always care whether they have 1,000 items or 100,000 items.
So praise works to get them to help *you*, but it won't do much to teach them to help themselves. It actually runs the risk of distracting them from all the benefits they can experience from living with less because they are so focused on doing it for you.

Also, I can attest to the praise of decluttering thing; I was not on a minimalistic journey with my first 4 kids. They’re messy, and have a hard time giving things up. My 4 to 2 year olds, I can ask them about “keep or donate?” and they usually have something to get rid of, and a reason. And they have less to begin with!

$94 is like $100 less than I paid for it. But NO REGRETS! Seriously. It’s worth the price simply for the paper decluttering, at least for me! The decluttering days are awesome too. I haven’t been that interactive with the Facebook group, but it was still worth it to me, because this goal is so important to me! I would pay double the price to be exposed to all this wisdom.

Dawn, we can see when you are distracted. Haha! I struggle with shopping particularly non groceries (don’t like that) and have for many years. Trouble now is “why did I buy this?” is a more frequent question. I buy for specific reasons. Not just because it’s pretty. Unpacking a delivery is now more of a mystery tour because my memory is deteriorating. I’m thinking I should make a list of what I’m adding to the cart and reason behind it. Like magazine holder an experiment to store bathroom items. A 22 to 23 diary to start in June to test a cheaper diary ($10 as opposed to the $100 diary I currently use.) Grey cube boxes to replace the ones disintegrated in the bedroom. Just a random list as I can’t remember what’s in the box.
Fabric is my not so secret vice. My rules were I love it, buy it. Then I narrowed it down to I must have enough to make a dress or something. Then I was buying for outfits I would make for family members because they would love it. But they wouldn’t really (when I thought about it). So I narrowed it down to me. But I haven’t yet gotten rid of the fabric for outfits no one wants. They will never be made! Of course I’ve no room to sew! But I don’t always remember who it was all for either. Shame and guilt!
    Needed to share. Thank you.

    • @wallflower5182
      @wallflower5182 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I hear you when buying multiple items, and also with the mountain of fabric. My son told me to open my fridge or cabinet before shopping groceries and take a picture. Then you have that to refer to when shopping. Smart kid.
I went through my fabric and sewing projects about a year ago. It was a hard task, but a very freeing one. I, too, had projects I wanted to do, because, heck! I was a sewist for goodness sakes! It means me taking a good look at myself and being brutally honest and real about what I actually wanted to accomplish and how long it would take me, and are these things even my style anymore?. The moment I placed the project materials in the give-away box or trash can, my heart was already lighter. I let my emotions lead the way to less guilt-ridden idea of my sewist-self to remove 7 large boxes of fabric and projects from my closet. I could even vacuum the floor of the closet when I was done! Yea, me!

Yes, I’ve bought bins bins bins to deal with stuff. But I knew no better. I was from a home where we had barely anything because we were very poor. And while that sounds great and everything I never knew how to deal with stuff because I never had to. Then I got married, and I married someone who was predominantly raised by his grandparents who were from the Great Depression. They saved absolutely everything and their basement, which was the square footage of their whole upstairs was full and their attic was full and every drawer in the house was full. Their house…. It wasn’t a disaster….they kept it clean and organized but there was just stuff!! And that’s what he was used to and so that is what he has done. Myself, it’s hard for me to function with so much, so I would just put things in bins or cubbies or baskets but I would love to get stuff out of the way cause I can’t deal. He has a much higher clutter threshold than I do. So I have just been slowly getting rid of my own things and then also controlling the kitchen since that’s my area. It has made my life much easier even though other parts of the house bother me, I know that as long as I keep my stuff to a minimum then I have better function. But I don’t know that we’ll ever get rid of bins and totes because that’s his framework. And because he can handle the clutter he doesn’t see it as an issue.
