  • Steve Micklethwaite (Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland) will present: A geoscience digital twin for exploration & ESG data discovery.
Abstract: Australia is one of the world's premiere destinations for minerals exploration and mining. A distinguishing characteristic is the provision of large amounts of precompetitive data. Such volumes of data have been instrumental in attracting industry investment and enabling companies to identify regions for exploration. However, massive data also presents a challenge in how it can be discovered and accessed, as well as the inability to visualise such data in 3D, at all scales (microscopic to 1000s kms), in a single environment. I describe the development of a digital twin of Queensland’s geoscience data, then outline how ESG data layers are opening up an entire new set of opportunities, before discussing opportunities for the Northern Territory with illustrations from the Pine Creek Orogen.
Bio: Steve has had a broad career in industry and research. Beginning as a structural and economic geoscientist, he has mapped on four continents, established large drone infrastructure for multiple users (pioneering innovation in this space), served as Discovery Manager for Anglo America in undercover environments, developed predictive exploration tools based on earthquake physics and led the construction of visual digital twins for the geosciences. He currently serves at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, UQ, where he leads the Resourcing Decarbonisation Program, which is a transdisciplinary program tackling the role and challenges faced by the resources sector in helping society achieve Net Zero. Steven is also a qualified drone pilot, and is leading a project modelling the Central Pine Creek Orogen, NT.
