  • Hey the TS-520 is a very nice CW Transceiver. Here is how to tune it up and use it for code operation on the Ham Bands.

For me, the TS-520 is still a really good analog transceiver today. I own a TS-520SE and definitely don't want to give it away. It's so reassuring to work with. It's reassuring because I have the impression that the receiver works very balanced. I would recommend everyone to land a TS-520 if they get the chance 🙂
Thanks for the nice series and 73, Bernd

I don't know how many times I hear a station answering a guy who repeatedly is calling CQ, but he is off frequency by 5 or 600 Hz and is never heard.

I started out (1977) with an Eico 753, with the infamous Plate, Tune and Load controls. Plus I was using a random wire antenna with a homebrew antenna 'tuner' and three more knobs to fiddle with. By the time I was tuned up and ready to answer a CQ, the poor guy at the other end had died of old age. I thus prefer solid state no-tune transceivers with broadband or tuned antennas. Instant QSY and instant reply to CQs or QRZs. I can turn on the radio (FT-991A) and *instantly* respond to a CQ on the dial. Old rigs are nice, but they're too slow to use for my liking.

Ha! They would not have room for those knobs anyway today! Hello Siri - swing the beam and answer his CQ on my home station, listen on the PA site, and you decide what RST to give him babe.

I remember visiting Harrison Radio down by city hall park NYC back in the 70's and they had stacks of 520's taken in on trade. Lots of Collins gear too.

👍Good to see the TS-520 in action Mike. RIT - I do wish ops would remember to use RIT during a QSO instead of tuning their main dial. It looks like the TS-520 has seen plenty tuning action going by the wear on the SEND/RECIEVE switch lettering.

I never understood the need for RIT until this, thanks. Something the HW-101 is missing, luckily the filters are separately selectable. Now if CW would actually install in my brain. I need to try again, maybe after 8 months of not trying it'll go better.

My first transceiver was the old National NCX-3. It did CW but no RIT or sidetone. That was a tough radio to use on CW! You would walk right up the band at every over!

On CW, I also often tune about with the LSB filter. I think the narrow CW filter ringing fatigues me. I also crank back on the RF gain to where the noise floor is just barely heard. It makes for a pleasant QSO for me. I have even modded some of my rigs without a narrow CW filter to just have a cap in there for "wide" mode RX. TNX OM ES 73's W3IHM

The QRP and Antique Wireless guys "listen around", but many folks will never hear you if you are more than 400 Hz off frequency because they just stay on frequency waiting for someone to come back exactly on frequency when 3 people are answering.

    I remember when a 520 was a new rig
I think they could be bought for about 600 dollars
I also remember what a large chunk of change 600 dollars was
    I know from the experience
That particular 600 dollars in the mid 70s
Would have been well spent on a 520 kenwood

    For new hams:
1.If a noise filter filters out noise than a CW filter must filter out CW.
    2. Negative voltage keying turns dits into dashes and vice versa.
    3. A dummy load is a vertical.
