I just inherited one like this. Never messed with one but looking forward to hearing ya on the clouds. Thanks for the video. I'm still grabbing a manual online before I fire it up, but now I have and idea of the process for lighting it up.

Real nice job! I love these old Kenwood hybrid rigs. Thanks for a look at this radio. And a big thanks for slowly and clearly explaining how to tune it. It is a very simple process, but so many get confused and make it harder than it is. I was first licensed as a 5 wpm Novice in 1992 and my first HF rig was a Kenwood TS-520S. It was an excellent first rig and still my favorite of all the dozens of radios I have owned since. Yes, l foolishly sold it to upgrade to a solid state radio. And yes, I desperately wish I had it back. 73!

Late to the dance here but this is a venerable radio. It's a "white face" model too! It was my first "advanced" rig,the one I got after passing my Advanced exam. I fired this up when I got my ticket in the mail and called CQ on 20m with one of those sexy 2x2 calls - KB6HK - and got so many responses back. Turns out, in the old call sign system, this was Baker or Howland Island in the Pacific. (I was in Southern California.)
When I gave my QTH everyone disappeared!

old and old but a wonderful audio, which is the end result of a well-projected rig...!

Low on receive audio? Im seeing your AF gain knob like at 7 or 8 with receive peaked, whereas mine at a 2 sounds louder than yours. And thats one of the things I love about these rigs, the sensitivity. I wonder if that's an issue on yours. You did an amazing job restoring this radio.

Needs an alignment with cores...and oscillators.

Hi.when in Cw for tune up and your needle is pegging to the right, open the side hatch, and adjust the RF VOLT peg.
This will allow your needle to fall back to 2/3 scale to give you room for adjustment.
Each bands 2/3 scale may be different.it doesnt need to be accurate. Its just a needle float.
    Afterwards..
Keep in CW , put selector to IP and send.
The needle should be at 200 210mA on IP scale.
    Adjust with carrier control.
Dont be surprised when u do this you are sitting at 230 250mA !! This will burn out your bottles.
200mA is nominal and should deliver 90 100w output.

I just got this from a local. He gave it to me for free. I tried talking but noticed the meter doesn't move when i try to transmit. Is there something I'm forgetting to do? Or is something wrong

There's a lot of possibilities. I recommend picking up the TS-520 manual and going through the entire tune process and understanding the controls (online for free!).

The Screen Grid switch might be turned off next to the fuse holder at the back of the transceiver. Or the Heater Switch is also off on the front panel.

Can you repair and restore my Ham Radio Kenwood tr 7950?

    • @ai6yr500

Those are fairly easy to fix, but the cost of sending it back and forth, my time, etc. probably prohibitive (unless you are in Ventura County, California). Great radios!

i watch these and whats the point of dipping the plate when you alter it for max power straight after!? seems pointless dipping it to start with ...huh?

    • @WoodenTailGate
      @WoodenTailGate 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that too

You NEED to dip the plate to get the bottle emissions in line.
If he had a meter connected you would see output around 4w then 10 15w when dipped.
      His order is fine.
Like a linear , dipping is up front so as not to overload or allow you to gain full drive.
Thats why we do this in tun mode.
Thr voltages at the bottles are halved to around 125v instead of a full 250v (cw ssb)
      Its a tube saver.
1 note when he 1st goes to ALC selection , it DOES NOT need to stay within the ALC range.
Normally adjustment of Alc needs to have carrier at 12 oclock level , higher for 10m band.
Once tuned , cw, ip , send and drop carrier back to 200mA.
