Lyrics
Take that look of worry
I'm an ordinary man
They don't tell me nothing
So I find out what I can
There's a fire that's been burning
Right outside my door
I can't see but I feel it
And it helps to keep me warm
So I, I don't mind
No I, I don't mind
Seems so long I've been waiting
Still don't know what for
There's no point escaping
I don't worry anymore
I can't come out to find you
I don't like to go outside
They can't turn off my feelings
Like they're turning off a light
But I, I don't mind
No I, I don't mind
Oh I, I don't mind
No I, I don't mind
So take, take me home
Cos I don't remember
Take, take me home
Cos I don't remember
Take, take me home
Cos I don't remember
Take, take me home, oh lord
Cos I've been a prisoner all my life
And I can say to you
Take that look of worry, mine's an ordinary life
Working when it's daylight
And sleeping when it's night
I've got no far horizons
I don't wish upon a star
They don't think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are
And I, I don't mind
No I, I don't mind
Oh I, I don't mind
No I, I don't mind
So take, take me home
Cos I don't remember
Take, take me home
Cos I don't remember
Take, take me home
Cos I don't remember
Take, take me home, oh lord
Well I've been a prisoner all my life
And I can say to you
But I don't remember
Take, take me home...

U said that even better👌🏽
Such an amazing song that evokes so much emotion, a hallmark of Phil’s musical writing style. Grew up with it and it never gets old. In doing a little research, in a VH1 interview back in the day, Phil said that the inspiration of the song was actually “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest”. I had always thought it was a song about the workaday man - which still kinda fits the lyrics - but hearing the mental institution angle sheds a whole other light on the song. Perhaps we all live in prisons or institutions of one sort or another and we all wish to go back “home” even if it’s little more than a conjuring of our own imagination. Yet another great song brought to you by “deep thought’s with Uncle Phil.”
You're right! Here's a funny tribute to the song that you might like?! th-cam.com/video/PT0lu1YnX1s/w-d-xo.html
Nostalgic song
reminds me of wrestling of the 80s, a great song, his best
The replay of Andre choking out Hogan and lifting the World Championship with this song closing out Saturday Nights Main Event was epic!
Sting and Peter Gabriel on back-up vocals! I was 10 yrs old when this came out in the US, and to this day it still gives me goose bumps and inspiration when listening to it! Just fired up the turntable going to give the record a go! Bravo Phil
That "Take, Take Me Hooooome" is where you feel it

The song of a Christian, not "I don't care" but "I don't mind."

It reminds me to to be me....
My grandfather passed away recently. He requested this song play during the procession of his cremation. I'm 25, I had no prior acknowledgment or appreciation for this song. But after listening to it after his funeral, I can appreciate his desire to return whence he came and be at rest, his soul to be taken home, a place I can only imagine as the spanning Welsh green pastures that encapsulate this beautiful country. In my heart, I truly believe he is at rest, and that he is having a proper laugh with Uncle James in those green Welsh expanses.
I love you Alan, I'm sorry I didn't say it more, but I hope you knew it in your heart.
Your Grandson,
Connor.
OMG, why am I crying....this is too sweet of a tribute, may your grandfather soul rest in peace😇😭🤍.
@@hiheyitsme_tayaltanese2826 He loved his whiskey, the proper Welsh stuff, Penderyn. I've been having a sip in his honor, and I'll be pouring some on his grave soon, sharing a drink with him from beyond. I'd like to think that he would appreciate that, and it shan't be his last, I'll be sure to pour some for him every year because I'll be damned if that insurmountable Welsh spirit of his is forgotten
Well done, Connor! I'm sure he's pleased! ❤

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
That's something I can relate to, not necessarily for the 80s as I wasn't born, but for significant times that' passed and the music that came with it. Quite astutely put 👌

You so know art, your description here says everything I feel👑❤
Yeah it's pretty good.
This is maybe stupid, but the spinning record - instead of a CD or nothing at all - is incredibly comforting to this child of the original vinyl era. I adore this song.
I like seeing the record spin too
Yeah. I never noticed. It has a hipnotic effect. Relaxing
yeah, except the reflection of the light shouldn't be rotating with the vinyl, unless the light is orbiting the vinyl in some weird way...
I'm fun at parties...
Nothing stupid about it - I was just remiscing about the sheer joy of going to the record store, holding the actual record in hour hands, reading the liner notes... I feel sorry for kids today, they will never know
Makes me want to play the orange vinyl I bought. My best friend keeps telling me I should have bought 2, 1 to play and1 to preserve.
Seriously why can’t we produce this kind of music anymore.. that’s shows back in the days we had intelligent music composers n singers
@James Smith yup true .. sort like that
Just like everything else today, it is mass produced with a formula. It of course doesn't have magic to it that music used to.
Volume wars ruined production quality Phil’s drums sound massssive because they had head room
Being limited by technology was a good thing back n the day
I love the comments here. I don’t feel so out of touch while I’m here reading them all.

I get you Richard i feel this song was written for my father, it always makes me cry❤
Phil Collins & Genesis have many songs like that for me ❤️
“There’s a fire that’s been burning right outside my door. I can’t see, but I feel it, and it help to keep me warm. So, I don’t mind.”
That line follows this one, “They don’t tell me nothing, so I find out all I can.”
To me, it almost seems like Phil is describing the mental anguish one might go through when they feel excluded, and isolated. It almost sounds like someone soothing themselves through an anxiety attack. “I can’t come out to find you. I don’t like to go outside.” It sounds like someone who is uncomfortable around people. “They can turn off my feelings like they’re turning off the light.”
Every line of this song rings so true to me. “Seems so long I’ve been waiting… still don’t know what for…” I’m 50 years old, and I still don’t know what I’m waiting for… so, I don’t worry anymore. ☺️
And for my father as well
