My grandfather passed away recently. He requested this song play during the procession of his cremation. I'm 25, I had no prior acknowledgment or appreciation for this song. But after listening to it after his funeral, I can appreciate his desire to return whence he came and be at rest, his soul to be taken home, a place I can only imagine as the spanning Welsh green pastures that encapsulate this beautiful country. the chorus has been one of my most primordial, earliest memories of music. I remember being in the backseat of our car and being completely enraptured with that vocal melody. that enrapturement has stayed with me all of these years. absolutely legendary tune.
It's just ridiculous how many hits Phil has. I just recently actually checked out his music. I used to think of him as the guy who sings "In the air tonight ".
A lot of hits and at one point the butt of jokes in the music industry. People hated Phil Collins for a while mainly due to being over-saturated on the radio.
Such an amazing song that evokes so much emotion, a hallmark of Phil’s musical writing style. Grew up with it and it never gets old. In doing a little research, in a VH1 interview back in the day, Phil said that the inspiration of the song was actually “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest”. I had always thought it was a song about the workaday man - which still kinda fits the lyrics - but hearing the mental institution angle sheds a whole other light on the song. Perhaps we all live in prisons or institutions of one sort or another and we all wish to go back “home” even if it’s little more than a conjuring of our own imagination. Yet another great song brought to you by “deep thought’s with Uncle Phil.”
Written about a mental health patient in hospital. I was very ill in hospital earlier this year and the lyrics are so meaningful to me. I couldn't remember alot of things and all I wanted was to be taken home. Thanks Phil x
Wow! I can't believe I never noticed Gabriel's prominence on the "Take, take me home" lines. It's like it's part of one of his songs. For that matter, I can't believe I've never noticed this fact in the liner notes of the album, or even remembered learning about it. I've been a Genesis/Collins/Gabriel freak for decades. Again, wow!
Thanks so much for the info, I never knew! I think it's so cool and humble when these big artists do backing vocals for others... also a testament of friendship How I miss those simpler, happier times... Stay safe and strong in 2021, everyone!
Hearing this on my alarm clock radio way back when. Something clicked. Still one of my favorite songs ever. First record I bought. It wasn't long before I had Invisible Touch and then his other solo albums and every Genesis album and then Brand X etc.

They don't tell me nothin'

One of the best voices in the world, thanks Phil.
One of the most beautiful voices ever. Thanks Fhil 😀❤️😀
This man wrote the greatest break up songs and rocked doing it 🤟
Without doubt..💚
This song and Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel are easily in my top 10 80’s jams.
The theme song that every grunt on the road to Fallujah sang. Thank you Phil for inspiring us. Some of us made it. Some of us didn't.

the chorus has been one of my most primordial, earliest memories of music. I remember being in the backseat of our car and being completely enraptured with that vocal melody. that enrapturement has stayed with me all of these years. absolutely legendary tune.
Huge fan! My favorite singer, love you Phil collins thank you for all the great songs

U said that even better👌🏽
Music for your soul, no cursing just great lyrics
Oh the memories this song brings...takes me back to 1986...simpler times.
No jacket required was Phil's best solo album hands down and this was the best song on it
Mr Robot used this song in a great scene, reminding me of Phil's genius. Its been stuck in my head a lot lately.
@@rommix0 That was never his fault though. He caught the brunt of all his popularity that was thrust upon him.
Phil Collins on this beat is exactly why he was a perfect fit on the Tarzan soundtrack. Iconic.
This song is incredibly sad.
It's about someone who is stuck at a Hospital because they have a Mental Illness, but they feel normal.
You're right! Here's a funny tribute to the song that you might like?! th-cam.com/video/PT0lu1YnX1s/w-d-xo.html
Written about a mental health patient in hospital. I was very ill in hospital earlier this year and the lyrics are so meaningful to me. I couldn't remember alot of things and all I wanted was to be taken home. Thanks Phil x
One of my favorite Phil Collins songs
Amo quest'uomo. La sua voce. Il ritmo,il suono, la melodía.
Love this jam - Phil you are a talented man.
You & I

This song brings back such good memories, driving with my best guy friend just having a great time-how I miss those days
Like many of Collin’s’ songs, they have beautiful melodies and are very emotional, too much so for me at times. Not sure why, but they are.
No Jacket Required. Fantastic album.👍
Backing Vocals: Sting, Gabriel and Helen Terry
Again, wow!
Just read it in Phil's biography and came here to listen, carefully... and enjoy!! 😍But Who could guess just by listening ? 😉
came here to post this. What a session that must've been.
Thanks so much for the info, I never knew! I think it's so cool and humble when these big artists do backing vocals for others... also a testament of friendship
How I miss those simpler, happier times... Stay safe and strong in 2021, everyone!
Helen Terry was the backup singer for Culture Club
Como SIEMPRE escuchando a este GENIO hace mucho tiempo. GRACIAS GRACIAS de ARGENTINA
Hearing this on my alarm clock radio way back when. Something clicked. Still one of my favorite songs ever. First record I bought. It wasn't long before I had Invisible Touch and then his other solo albums and every Genesis album and then Brand X etc.
❤
Fantastic song and Phil Collins is a GREAT drummer too. Love ALL his songs ❤️
What a fantastic track this is. 🎤
This song makes me cry.
I can't get over of how beautiful this song is
You've made my childhood, through my mom. I grew up with you. Each time I listen to you I'm at home in my heart and my soul smiles. So grateful to you..... So many thanks.....
