Lived at Bagster Road Salibury North from 1955-1962 when I joined the RAAF.Father was a long time Employee of LRWE/WRE-and I will always remember the Vickers Valiants taking off from RAAF Edinburgh for missile tests at Woomera. Many years later I flew a jet into Woomera myself.Great work Will. Thank you.
Awesome Roy. Thank you so much for sharing that. Love it. Thank you for watching. I'm posting the full 1957 Woomera/WRE video on Tuesday shown in part here 🙏
@@elizabeththatwas Look forward to seeing that. as a fan of Len Beadell, the famous army surveyor that wrote many books and was responsible for selecting and surveying the site for Woomera, and the sites of Emu field, where the first mainland atomic tests were carried out and later Maralinga, it will be interesting to learn more about Woomera and the WRE as well. 🙂
@@catey62 cool. It's a great snapshot of South Australia as a whole, as well as the WRE site in Penfield/Salisbury. Many of the workers shown in the film would have been Salisbury North and Elizabeth's first residents.
Absolutely fascinating! I had no idea about the Elizabeth/Salisbury North issues until now. We migrated from England in 1959/60 and our first 'proper' home in SA was in Harvey Road at Elizabeth South (dad was employed at LWRE). We moved to Ceduna in '62 and came back to Elizabeth Downs (Gayland Road) in '64. My parents bought their first home in 65/66 in McLelland St, Elizabeth Field. My first proper job was at WRE .The footage has taken me on a wonderful trip down memory lane. Thank you :-)
My pleasure Helen. Glad you enjoyed it. This is video 4 in a series - each looking at a different aspect of Elizabeth's history, but interconnected. The next video is a week or two away and looks at life for residents at the Smithfield Hostel. Eventually, the series will look at Elizabeth's rather rapid decline in fortunes, beginning in the 1970s. But for now, it's all about a time when the future looked promising. Thanks again, much appreciated
I grew up on Hume street Salisbury north between 1990-2003. So many memories, good & bad. How time goes fast. This was an interesting video thoroughly researched. Great content.
What a great video. I will have to watch a few more times to get my head around the scenes. Being an old Salisbury North person, the shots of the Flour Mill, the flooded Waterloo Cnr Rd ( when in flood we used to go to the underwater bridge and pull oranges out of the Little Para ) The cabin homes after closing down where we used to fill up wheat bags of fruit to take home. The Salisbury Railway station etc etc. Too many stories to tell. Regards Barry Mullett.
Wow great job mate very interesting so much history a lot of it before my family came in 64. I remember my mum and dad taking us kids to Winsor green playing around the fountain and mucking about on the big gun. It's funny but even till this day when ever I smell enamel paint it reminds me of the first day we moved into our house in Elizabeth west. They must have given it a paint up before we moved in. They didn't do anything about the long grass and tall weeds though we could hardly get the car up the drive the first day lol. Thanks for all your hard work and the memories.👍
Thank you Geoff. Our local history is so rich and nuanced. I love that it's being appreciated. And I love all the stories everyone is sharing - thank you 🙏
1960, Enterprise Road, Elizabeth East. My mothers family came to South Australia in 1849. I loved my childhood in Elizabeth. EEPS was great. Then my parents bought The Celebrity Coffee Lounge in the original centre. That was great. 1963-1972.
Wow. 1849. That's amazing. What tales your family must be able to share about SA's history. Celebrity Lounge is quite the enigma - I have tried find resources about the place and tales documenting its history, but there's very little on public record. Would love to do a mini-doc episode one day. Just need the material . Thank you again, for watching. Much appreciated
This video brought back some memories. I moved into Elizabeth as a child as part of one the first groups of residents and was at the official opening. Surprisingly, I was not aware of the Salisbury North connection and always assumed it was built at the same time as Elizabeth.
Hey Tim. What a day that first day must have been. I can only imagine the sense of hope and new beginnings that must have prevailed that day. And awe, too I imagine. At the sheer scale of starting afresh in an as yet unfinished new town
Thank you Vincent. Not sure of the street address but know it was located in Gawler somewhere. As they are very respectful of their architectural history I imagine the building is probably still there somewhere 🙏
The original District Council of Munno Para East office, not to be confused with the later built Munno Para West office at 39 Murray Street, still stands at the corner of Adelaide Rd and Twelfth Street in Gawler.
@@gardenpixie20 thank you so much. i really appreciate that. I have a follow to this video coming out. I hope to post it this weekend. Following at the latest. This one focuses on life at the Smithfield Hostel in the 60s.
Bluddy housing trust! They sure didn't manage things right and now look what we got. Elizabeth's design and outlook great but housing trust stuffed it all up with a rushed in thoughtless housing design(semi detached) and now paying for it. Bulldozer the lot! I reckon.
