Watched Emoni Bates play in the game where he scored 30 pts. Love him, but he's still rusty from his knee surgery. There will inevitably some injuries on the Cavs this season and he will get his chance to play then.

Also I'm still feeling like its fools gold with this dude, he's everyone's favorite guy to root for i guess because people are obsessed with unrealized potential. It sucks for him, but it seems that Emoni needs several Cavs players to get injured before he's going to see some playing time on his two-way deal. I agree that it would be nice to find a way to get Emoni some runtime because I am impressed with his ability to bulk up and he is already a legit NBA three-point shooter. The young man deserves a chance. There is no doubt that he can shoot the ball. We can't stash him in the G-League forever. A decision will have to be made on him sooner rather than later and it'll be hard to make the right decision if he never gets a chance this year with Cavs. Atkinson is supposed to be good at developing young guys. He may just have to find the right games to bite the bullet and dress Emoni. Maybe against Charlotte or Brooklyn or teams like that. Just dress him and put him out there for 15 minutes a game. It shouldn't hurt the Cavs ability to keep winning games when he plays. If he's not working, then just pull him out. I view Emoni as the eventual replacement for Levert. This is the last year on Levert's contract. Mitchell and Mobley's extensions kick in next season so resigning Levert will be tough unless he takes a significant pay cut to stay an extra year.

Bates has never been a consistently efficient scorer and he needs to get that sorted before he can be a NBA rotation player. He was awful last year in his limited NBA minutes, totally unable to guard his position and looked totally lost when he didn't have the ball in his hands (not surprising)and hasn't had a shot yet this year because of the injury. He's a young second round pick, so making a NBA roster will be an accomplishment in itself, if it ever happens.

What you cannot be (and what I've seen that Bates is) is totally unaware that a) defense matters and b) the basic concepts of team defense. Physical development is needed, but so is awareness of what defense means and how to do it. Can he get there? Sure, maybe. But he has a really long way to go to make up for the development mistakes when he was younger.

From what I saw, his defense was basic. He can learn to be better. A lot of teams play basic defense anyways. Only the winning teams play better defense...effective defense. Needs more playing time. Can be used as a shooter only, like Ray Allen. Some teams have good shooters and rebounders. Can be a problem to defend against that. But, lockdown defense? What else is required of him? If you don't like him, just say so. I can name players that can't stay with their man, or play helpside defense. Yet, they play all the time.

Going to Ypsi Prep from Ypsi Lincoln hurt him. His dad did that. He should have went to an IMG, Mountverde, Oakhill type school instead of his dad creating a Prep school like Ypsi Prep specifically for him.

He was so talented at a young age that he could just go iso and score a gazillion points and he dominated because it was always about him and he always had the ball. But that only works so far and it stopped working once he got out of high school. But in the meantime that's still how he thought the game was played. So on top of getting him physically ready to be a NBA player the Cavs development people how to teach him how competitive basketball actually works. Can he learn what he needs to? It remains to be seen, he probably has two more years to show something.
