Gavaskar and Greg Chappell are underrated gems from the 70's and 80's, having an average above 50 and in fact thriving against the WI pace quartet of Hoding, Garner, Croft and Roberts and later even Marshall, is no joke, especially without a helmet... That debut of Gavaskar's against the Windies in Windies where he scored 700+ runs in just 4 tests and missed a test of that five-match series is the best batting display I can think of(don't bring Bradman into this, that guy was a god, I often used to think that he was a myth cause I kept hearing from people that he had an average of 99.94 in an era of uncovered pitches, bodyline and no helmets)

The pitches weren't batsman friendly like today, cricket was still a 'Gentleman's game' and wasnt played solely for money or were there any scantilly dressed cheer leaders, nor T20s, betting mafia...CRICKET was COMPETITIVE and played with awesome spirit... there were no rules of one bouncer/over those times.. bouncers were bowled as normal deliveries. There was virtual bloodshed on the field. Hostile, vile bowling attacks. And today some people talk just because THEY HAVE TO TALK. Sunny played in a different era, and Sachin in a different era, and Virat Kohli in a different era. AND, Arjun Tendulkar WILL be playing in a DIFFERENT ERA. Yes you are right, These days bowling are street bowling. Nothing great. All become batsman game. And from Early 70s to early mid 2000 the bowlings were really lethal. 70s was terror/ horror for batsman if they are playing against Wi / Australia.
He is fourth innings avg is 59 sums up everything .in his last test he scored 90 on dust bowl when no other batsman score 30+.he could hav played more matches but he retired at his peak form . i think sachin should hav done same thing he should hav retired form 2011 SA series .he played too long .Sunny was better player of spin bowling than viv richards

having watched both tendulkar and gavaskar play, as a test batsman gavaskar was slightly better batsman specially when defense and temperament is concerned. Buts that is everything else tendulkar is better batsman (tests odi combined).
Gavaskar had a superior defensive technique. Whereas, Sachin had wider range of attacking strokes and much more balance when he played his shots. I agree its difficult to compare both batsman as they both have incredible feats like both averaging highest against the best teams of the era ( WI and Aus) !
Sachin got hit on the helmet so many times, and that too as only 2 down and in an era where bouncer restrictions are in place. Gavaskar never ever got hit in the head (he was so confident he never wore a helmet) and that too as an opener where conditions and pitch behavior are unknown, and against the fearsome fast bowlers of his time like Marshal, Garner, Robert, Holding, Thomas, Lillee, Willis etc. This settles the argument for me once and for all.
Sunil Gavaskar is the baap of Tendulkar in Test Cricket. In the 1960s and 70s,India used to have a terrible reputation as a Cricketing team -especially on overseas conditions. This man changed everything - Thinner bats,longer boundaries,perfect pitches and dangerous bowlers - he used to carry the batting on his shoulders especially on 4th innings pitches. Had Sunil started his career in the 1990s,his test batting average would have been 70+. Only visiting batsman who earned a Calypso song in his name - from the fans of the great West Indies!! And Sunil had an average of 35 in ODIs in the 1980s - though not many centuries - which is equivalent to 40-45 in the era of Sachin and Lara. So Gavaskar has to be the best ever Indian batsman. Sachin fans might not accept it.
The greatest batsman since Bradman was Viv Richards. The man never wore any protective gear except the pads. He intimidated the fast bowlers and not the other way around. Gavaskar was extremely good, had better technique and temperament than Richards. He faced all the fast bowlers and was never intimidated. You knew that he was going to score a century in one of the two innings. He was also the best player of spin, if anyone remembers his knock in Bangalore 86-87. That was extraordinary. It is a shame that Shane Warne never got to bowl to him. Tendulkar was good, but he never had to play without the helmet. It is hard to say how successful he would have been without the helmet.
Viv Richards was a miserable failure against Lillee, Thomson in Australia in 1975-76. The Aussies won 5-1 at home. Viv never had to face the world's fastest bowlers because they played for Windies.

Sunil Gavaskar was one of the most difficult batsmen to dislodge in test cricket. The others in his era were Geoffrey Boycott and Glen Turner. These 3 were a breed apart from the rest. I think Andy Roberts and Michael Holding were his contemporaries, Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson also were around at the same time. So it is wrong to say that he did not face genuine pace bowlers

Wasim was spot on...Sunil Gavaskar played in that bowlers dominating era without a helmet...faced the most lethal and the fastest bowlers like Walsh,Ambrose,Marshall,Wasim,Lilee,Imran,Hadlee,Garner,Dujon,Patterson...in those difficult batting pitches and conditions with a thin piece of willow so called a cricket bat(the early 80's cricket bats which were thin as a hockey stick) still managed to get a lot of runs in the difficult English and Australian conditions...scored a lot of runs throughout his career with a great consistency and ended up with 34 test centuries and an average over 50...a real genius and undoubtedly a gem of Indian batting

Gavaskar had no Dada, Dravid, Laxman to back him up. except Vishwanath and Azhar he hardly played with a companion equaling him. No before him could ever imagined that 10000 runs can be scored. He showed it in those days, and held his record high for 22 years. I have seen him playing in the ground. What a beautiful stance he had, and very good running between the wicket. Tendulkar is good, but Gavaskar is Gavaskar.

Grounds were really big in 70s, 80s and 90s with slow outfield. The quality of the bad was relatively poor in those days which has improved a lot in this modern age. Getting a boundary was really hard and hitting a six wad even worse back then, but when you see gavaskar's record he is just phenomenal.

@vivek narayane do you even comprehend the calibre and ferocious bowling that Sunny faced in the 70s and 80s?? The pitches weren't batsman friendly like today, cricket was still a 'Gentleman's game' and wasnt played solely for money or were there any scantilly dressed cheer leaders, nor T20s, betting mafia...CRICKET was COMPETITIVE and played with awesome spirit... there were no rules of one bouncer/over those times.. bouncers were bowled as normal deliveries. There was virtual bloodshed on the field. Hostile, vile bowling attacks.
And today some people talk just because THEY HAVE TO TALK.
Sunny played in a different era, and Sachin in a different era, and Virat Kohli in a different era. AND, Arjun Tendulkar WILL be playing in a DIFFERENT ERA. One needs to understand that and rather celebrate the skills, talent, excellence, moments and memories.
SPORTS has to be enjoyed in a pure and unbridled sense.... it's emotions, peaks, failures, victories, the euphoria.... all these have to be celebrated without a sense of .... unnecesary comparisons, prejudice and favoritism.

Yes you are right, These days bowling are street bowling. Nothing great. All become batsman game. And from Early 70s to early mid 2000 the bowlings were really lethal. 70s was terror/ horror for batsman if they are playing against Wi / Australia.

Sunny scored against West Indiand and Aussy Attack of that era where condition's were bowler friendly. Todays Batman mostly play on flat wickets with too much fielding restrictions. Sunny sir is truly great !!

having watched both tendulkar and gavaskar play, as a test batsman gavaskar was slightly better batsman specially when defense and temperament is concerned. Buts that is everything else tendulkar is better batsman (tests odi combined).

Gavaskar had a superior defensive technique. Whereas, Sachin had wider range of attacking strokes and much more balance when he played his shots. I agree its difficult to compare both batsman as they both have incredible feats like both averaging highest against the best teams of the era ( WI and Aus) !
Sachin got hit on the helmet so many times, and that too as only 2 down and in an era where bouncer restrictions are in place. Gavaskar never ever got hit in the head (he was so confident he never wore a helmet) and that too as an opener where conditions and pitch behavior are unknown, and against the fearsome fast bowlers of his time like Marshal, Garner, Robert, Holding, Thomas, Lillee, Willis etc. This settles the argument for me once and for all.
Sunil Gavaskar is the baap of Tendulkar in Test Cricket. In the 1960s and 70s,India used to have a terrible reputation as a Cricketing team -especially on overseas conditions. This man changed everything - Thinner bats,longer boundaries,perfect pitches and dangerous bowlers - he used to carry the batting on his shoulders especially on 4th innings pitches. Had Sunil started his career in the 1990s,his test batting average would have been 70+. Only visiting batsman who earned a Calypso song in his name - from the fans of the great West Indies!! And Sunil had an average of 35 in ODIs in the 1980s - though not many centuries - which is equivalent to 40-45 in the era of Sachin and Lara. So Gavaskar has to be the best ever Indian batsman. Sachin fans might not accept it.

You know you are really good when a bowler considered best by many couldn't get you out ever.
The greatest batsman since Bradman was Viv Richards. The man never wore any protective gear except the pads. He intimidated the fast bowlers and not the other way around.
Gavaskar was extremely good, had better technique and temperament than Richards. He faced all the fast bowlers and was never intimidated. You knew that he was going to score a century in one of the two innings. He was also the best player of spin, if anyone remembers his knock in Bangalore 86-87. That was extraordinary. It is a shame that Shane Warne never got to bowl to him.
Tendulkar was good, but he never had to play without the helmet. It is hard to say how successful he would have been without the helmet.

Viv Richards was a miserable failure against Lillee, Thomson in Australia in 1975-76. The Aussies won 5-1 at home. Viv never had to face the world's fastest bowlers because they played for Windies.

Sunil Gavaskar was one of the most difficult batsmen to dislodge in test cricket. The others in his era were Geoffrey Boycott and Glen Turner. These 3 were a breed apart from the rest. I think Andy Roberts and Michael Holding were his contemporaries, Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson also were around at the same time. So it is wrong to say that he did not face genuine pace bowlers

Wasim was spot on...Sunil Gavaskar played in that bowlers dominating era without a helmet...faced the most lethal and the fastest bowlers like Walsh,Ambrose,Marshall,Wasim,Lilee,Imran,Hadlee,Garner,Dujon,Patterson...in those difficult batting pitches and conditions with a thin piece of willow so called a cricket bat(the early 80's cricket bats which were thin as a hockey stick) still managed to get a lot of runs in the difficult English and Australian conditions...scored a lot of runs throughout his career with a great consistency and ended up with 34 test centuries and an average over 50...a real genius and undoubtedly a gem of Indian batting

Gavaskar had no Dada, Dravid, Laxman to back him up. except Vishwanath and Azhar he hardly played with a companion equaling him. No before him could ever imagined that 10000 runs can be scored. He showed it in those days, and held his record high for 22 years. I have seen him playing in the ground. What a beautiful stance he had, and very good running between the wicket. Tendulkar is good, but Gavaskar is Gavaskar.

Grounds were really big in 70s, 80s and 90s with slow outfield. The quality of the bad was relatively poor in those days which has improved a lot in this modern age. Getting a boundary was really hard and hitting a six wad even worse back then, but when you see gavaskar's record he is just phenomenal.
