- Held items are almost mandatory in competitive Pokemon, and they can give you a nice little edge during a playthrough. But there are some cases where going itemless (or getting rid of your item as quickly as possible) is ideal. Which Pokemon are best off with empty pockets? Why is Matt pushing Elias to go see a dentist? Do hawks eat salamanders? Answers to two of those questions on today's MEPlaysGames.

Chingling is a yellow, spherical Pokémon similar to a jingle bell. It has stubby arms and legs, as well as beady, black eyes. There are circular openings on both sides of its mouth. Inside its mouth is a red orb, which creates a ringing sound as the Pokémon moves. Additionally, the orb can be vibrated to create high-frequency, long-lasting cries to deafen its opponents. The sounds produced can be too high for people to hear, yet powerful enough to give them headaches. Atop its body is ring-like growth with a striped rope through the middle. The rope is red-and-white with short tassels on the ends.

I have a weird false memory of encountering a Chimecho on Mt. Pyre and being unable to catch it. Every ball I threw would burst open in front of the battle sprite’s layer and the message would show saying “the ball missed the Pokémon!”
In I believe gen 6 VGC or maybe OU, there was a time where key targets were afraid of being tricked detrimental items such as a choice item, so they would actually run mail to ensure that their item could not be tricked into something worse. I think this also served as keeping knock off damage at 65 as well. Incredibly specific metagame conditions made mail an actual niche option on some mons and I think that’s great
It was used in ou on dedicated stall teams usually held by blissey
Knock off damage wasn’t boosted by an item in Gen 6

IIRC a Sableye in the romhack called Vintage White is running Mail for the exact same reason.

This reminds me, one of my favorite Pokémon to use in a Singles team back when I was semi-competitive in Pokémon X was Hawlucha. The set I used though was Unburden, Power Herb, Sky Attack, Acrobatics, High Jump Kick, and a coverage move (I forget what it was).
Get it in play at a good time, let loose an instant 140 base power Sky Attack, then after it gets its speed boost, keep spamming 110 Acrobatics and 140 High Jump Kick and go for the sweep.
Its crazy to me that they gave magician to delphox instead of Magic guard, especially because they gave one The most broken abilitties to greninja
If they did then Delphox could use a Life Orb, powering up its moves without drawback. I support this though. The starters, save for a few, need an ability change, nothing too drastic, but most are inferior to Greninja.
Fling lagging tail, the best combo

I just checked Serebii and Lagging Tail, through Fling, has a base power of 10 and Iron Ball has 130, same as a Big Nugget, so Trick Lagging Tail/Iron Ball is better for slowing the opponent with Iron Ball also making flying and levitate Pokemon vulnerable to Ground moves, but it and Big Nugget can be used as a high power one use Dark move
Fling does not give the opponent your item, so fling big nugget is better, since it does not slow you down like the iron ball.
Chimecho is actually one of my favorite Pokemon. It's really adorable to me, and windchimes are really soothing. I won't mention Chimecho's pre-evolution by name, but that Pokemon is equally adorable!
I can't help but love chingling. The fact that is inspired by a jingle bell being a pre-evolution of a wind chime amazes me.
Chingling is a baby pokemon introduced in Generation Four, alongside other baby pokemon such as Bonsly, Munchlax, Mantyke, and Budew.
Hawlucha gets Fling. Just give it an item with the effect of your choice for the start of the fight, then get the speed AND Acrobatics boost for the rest of the fight
For a little while in Gen 9 UU, (I think) Hoopa Unbound would run eject pack and magician. Hyperspace fury would deal massive damage, active eject pack to switch out, and steal the enemies item all in one turn. I don’t know if this is a documented strategy in sample teams for UU at the time, but I definitely ran into it a lot on ladder when climbing
It took me like an hour to encounter 1 Chimecho in Emerald and after doing it once i never tried catching it again
weird but efective doubles strat: attack your unburden pokemon with your magician pokemon, so that the unburden user gets the boost and you still have ur item :)
Pickpocket is also a similar ability to Magician but it activates when it makes contact

Technically speaking, with Unburden sets they have to hold an item in the first place for the ability to take effect, which contradicts the title. lol

If you use a Pokémon with the ability pick up without an item in hand then use knock off you would then pick up the item yourself.

As a guess, it's something to do with generation 1 Pokémon.
They wrote the code wrong which gave 100 accuracy moves a 1/256 chance to miss.
I missed the part of the video they say that tbh, wasn't really watching that closely

Pickpocket is mentioned in text form at the beginning of the Magician section. There are a lot of niche reasons to not hold an item, so for the sake of having a video of a reasonable length, we skipped over some other stuff as well
