Hi Janette, You'll be able to open up your own Heuchera business with all those pots! Thank you for showing us what to do as I need to sort mine but didn't really know what to do. Love all the different colours. Your garden looks so pretty at the moment.
Hello Wendy and thank you so much. I’m going to give lots away I think. I just adore them though. Obviously they’re at their utmost best the first year you have them, mind you I’m so pleased that the ones by my fountain have really perked up, I think I planted those last year. 🌺🌺
Good morning and I’m so pleased 😀 this video was a while ago now but I’m pleased to say I had so many heucheras I had to give them away and the ones I kept have grown up now, it’s definitely worth doing. Happy weekend ❤️💛
I have some heucheras, which definitely need this done to them, but I’ve always been afraid to do it. You’ve given me the courage I need to get on it. Thanks Janette. As always you teach us something new. 💚
Oh thank you again JC, it really works, you can stick them straight into the soil to save you doing all the pots bit. Just keep them nicely watered at the start. I’ve done that to some of mine too. I just think, what’s the worst that can happen - we can always buy a new Heuchera 😆😆🥰
Hi Jeanette, great video ! Again I've learnt new skills added to my gardening toolbox! I have a few heucheras plants in my garden, think they are called plum pudding. I have noticed after a while they do become ugly wish I had watched your video earlier and know how to divide and produce lots of new plants. I enjoyed the way you demonstrate the process, the music, the time lapse camera, your easy and relaxed personality. Question What will you do with all those new plants? You mentioned replacing your tulips, do you mean dig them up and replacing them? Thanks once again for your time and effort showing your garden and sharing your knowledge. S
Hi there Stephen and thanks for watching. I’ve actually planted a few of these back into my borders, and I’ve given most of the others away and I have about 6 or 7 still in pots so I think I’ll just dot those in somewhere. Yes I pull my tulips right out because they never come back very strong here, just short and often just leaves with no flowers, plus I like planting new ones wiry different colours (but I hate doing it in the cold of October so have to force myself). I still have some left, but they won’t be around for much longer. Happy Sunday Stephen 🥰
Thank you Janette. This is very informative. I do have some very old heucheras that would probably benefit from being divided. I have broken some and stuck the pieces right in the ground and they did regrow, so you are absolutely right that they are tough plants.
Oh I’m really pleased to hear you’ve done that and it worked. Far easier than getting lots of pots out. I’ve stuck some of mine straight back in too and I’m going to give most of mine away 🥰
Your Heucheras have always been lovely and now you have enough for a car boot sale! How I envied the rain at the beginning of your video. It makes everything so lush and fresh. Please send some my way!
Fantastic educational video on heuchera division/propagation! Don't you just love when choice plants multiply themselves?? I have my first set of hellebore seedlings that I need to pot up before the weather gets too hot. Happy gardening!
Thank you AJ, I’ve given most of my little plants away so was pleased about being able to do that. I don’t have any hellebores, that’s something I’d like to add for sure. Thanks so much for watching - happy Sunday 🥰
Hello there and thanks for watching. This video was over a year ago now, and I can honestly say it does work. I had so many plants (as you saw) and gave lots away, but the ones I kept are all now lovely new plants. I few of them didn’t make it but the majority did. It does seem awful taking a large plant apart but they do get big and unattractive after a while. I have a few more I will be doing this to soon. Wishing you success!! 🩷😊
WOW! What an informative, easy to follow video on one of my favorite plants! 🤩I have been dividing them for a long time, but see now, I was too gentle! Hello Stacy and thank you for subscribing 🙏 it’s so lovely to have a new gardening friend. I’m pleased to say that this video was over a year ago now, and I have so many new heucheras now. A few didn’t make it, and I gave lots away, but I have many new ones now. It seems so harsh when you’re cutting up a huge plant, but it’s worth it. I have another large Heuchera which has grown old and leggy so I will do that one next. Blessings back to you over there n Lakewood WA. 😊🩷

Hello there Carolyn and I’m so glad to have helped you! And I am delighted to reassure you that one year on from this video and most of my new Heucheras took hold and are still going strong. I had so many and gave lots away but I will definitely always do this every time. Good luck and they just need a bit of time to take hold and become established but it really does work. Have a great week 🌺🩵
I have liked the Heucharas in your garden as they look so healthy. I haven’t had much success with mine. This video was very useful though as I didn’t know you could propagate them like that 😊 loads of free plants - love it Janette!
Hi there Pamela and thank you. They don’t do well for everyone though do they? All depends on our climates so I’m very lucky. Hope you’re well and having a great week 🥰
Hi there Laurie and thank you so much! This video was a year ago and I am so pleased to tell you that my divided Heucheras all grew really well and today they are lovely new plants. A few of them didn’t take, probably didn’t have enough root stem, but I had so many I gave lots away. I will definitely always do this. It seems quite scary cutting up a lovely big plant, but it works 🩷 however … tomorrow’s video is something else I tried which didn’t work 😂 so you win some, you lose some! 😊 hopefully see you tomorrow! 🩷
Wow I learned something today my friend , I don’t have big Heucheras like that , but I will do that for sure in the future . That was a lot of plants !! . 😊
Hi Max and I’m so pleased!! That was a lot of plants 😆 and I stuck some more straight in the ground and I’ll probably give the rest away. Have a wonderful week 🥰
Hi Janette, it appears that Monty Don has taught you well. We had 3 days of non stop rain here too. The entire weekend was a washout. The sun came back out just in time to go back to work.
Hello! Oh yes good old Monty, he’s fabulous. But oh what a shame about your weather … so annoying when you wait all week to get outside and then it pours down!! Hopefully it’s going to get better soon 🤞 wishing you a wonderful week 🥰
Hi Janette, thank you for the master class. My heucheras are not as big as yours so I think I’ll try the splitting in half and planting deeper as you suggested. All your different coloured ones look so attractive together.
Hello there Sue. The splitting in half is so much easier!! I must promise myself to do that with my other newer ones. Trouble is I never want to disturb them 😆🥰
It encouraging to see how u can expand just from one plant like this! I tried planting one of those many years back n it didn’t do well😞. Being a beginner gardener I got discourage I never tried since. Maybe it’s time to give it a go again. I love all the colors they come in now n really add to ur garden!😊
Hi Mary, I think it depends where you live because I know heucheras don’t do well for everyone so I’m very lucky they like it here in my climate. I have planted some straight in the ground too, so I’ll keep you updated, and I’ll probably give the others away. Thanks for watching, and hope you have a really great week 🥰
Well I was here and left a comment and it just evaporated .... and you know me it was a long one ... anyway thanks for showing us how to start new Heucheras ... I have a bunch that need work so it really helps a lot .... Hugs
Hello dear Shirlene, sometimes I find comments from a month ago which just pop up out of nowhere so maybe yours is somewhere in the big TH-cam comment section in the sky 😆 and I’ll find it one day out of the blue 👍 hope you’re well 🥰
You could have a plant swap or sale or give away. I’m looking forward to mind growing large enough to divide . Funny I just transplanted several and did a video 😉🤔we are on similar path this week . It looks simple procedure thanks good learning video.
Hey Teresa, I’ll look out for your video!! I guess we’re all doing the same thing at the same time, that’s the thing with our gardening channels isn’t it, we can only do what needs to be done 😆😆💕 I’m going to give most away, to Mum and Tina (who looks after my dogs) and anyone else I can find 😆
Hiya Janette! I’m new to this channel- I typed in ‘how to divide heuchera’ and there you were ! And what a brilliant video-exemplary really. I couldn’t wait to tackle mine, and I got 9 new plants, all replanted and have started to grow Thank you! Loving your previous videos from your lovely garden All the best! Mahmuda
Hi there Mahmuda and thank you so much for watching! Most of the heucheras I divided in this video have survived and are growing well now, so good luck with yours. I did give lots of mine away, as I just had so many, but it does work!! Thanks for visiting my garden and it’s so lovely to have a new gardening friend 🩷😍
Good morning Cheryl. So pleased to have helped you. This was I think 2 weeks ago and I’m happy to say all but one or two are thriving and looking good now. They might look a bit droopy for a couple of days but just keep them watered. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Hoping for no rain this weekend 😊🥰
Good morning. Great video, do you know how long the heucheras become full plants, I want to split one of the purple ones up, but haven't got the heart to do so yet.
I know what you mean s jay, and that’s the reason I delay doing mine. Because it’s going to take them maybe a year to get a decent size. I think cutting one in half and burying both halves a bit deeper is a good idea, just that mine had got so big as you could see that I had no option. But, lots of free plants now so I’ll be giving lots away. 🥰
Good morning Diane and thank you! I gave most of my cuttings away but the ones I’ve kept are doing great, and i only lost a couple. Thanks for watching and I wish you a great week 💚
Hi Janette. I planted my first ever heucheras last autumn, so I'm very happy you shared this information. How often do you think they should be split? Every year? It's May 😃❤. Normally things should start warming up after "les saints Glaces ". The ice saints, this is on the 11th 12th and 13th. Gardeners here say that after this, we can plant out whatever we want. That would be great because I just don't know what to do with all of these seedlings! 😅. Have a lovely week 🙋♀️
Hi there Kim, I’ve not heard of Les saints glaces!! But I think those dates are what I’m thinking too. I bet you can’t wait to get all your seedlings out, it’s hard work caring for them at this stage in the game. With regard to how often to divide your heucheras, I think perhaps every other year should keep them under control. And then what I failed to mention is that if you just do it the “cut them in half down the middle” (easier) way, it’s probably a good idea to bury the second one nice and deep and maybe even dig up original clump and put that down lower too. I must make sure to do this more often. 🥰
3 of each variety please!!! Crumbs you could start a Heuchera nursery with all of those. I did the same with one of mine last week, but mine was much smaller than yours and straggly. None of mine have mounded, I'm wondering if they're struggling with my clay soil x
Really helpful! Instead of getting 20+ small plants out of one original huge plant, could you just keep the larger plants (eg with 3 or 4 branches as at 7.05) and plant them up.. just not sure how long till the small plantlets become reasonable sized plants?
Hi there 😊 yes I guess you could do that so they are a bit larger to start with. I actually filmed this video around April 2023 and a year later most of them have survived. I gave lots away to friends and now the ones I kept are really good size heucheras again. I fact I ended up with far too many I couldn’t have kept them all, I wouldn’t have anywhere to plant them all 😂 I do have a few more large heucheras I could divide so I’ll probably do that but it does make so many 😊 saves a lot of money though. Thanks so much for watching ❤️😊
Hi Marianne, I would probably wait until Spring now to try this, then your little plants will have a longer time to get established before it gets cold. Good luck!! 🩷
Hi Janette. Having watched many of your videos you have given me all sorts of gardening ideas and like you I have a love of the many different varieties of Heuchera. I have planted 5 different colour variations In my front garden and the leaves on 3 of them are quickly turning yellow and crispy. Any idea what might be causing this and what can I do to resolve the problem. Have you yourself had this problem. Cheers Nigel.
Hello there Nigel and thank you so much for watching my videos and for your lovely comments. Yes, a few of my Heuchera varieties suffer with scorched leaves, it’s the ones with lighter coloured leaves. They really prefer partial or dappled shade, but the darker leaved ones can often tolerate more sun, and it may even enhance their colour. The paler ones can more easily get bleached or scorched in a bright spot. I suppose it’s a bit like us with our skin tones, a very fair person is going to suffer more in the sun than if you have darker skin. But I do think that once they’re established (and not brand new in the garden) they start to handle it better. I did actually go outside yesterday and cut off a few burnt leaves from a couple of mine. I don’t know that I’ve helped you much though because that’s not much of a solution, but on the whole they are very tough and so beautiful so I guess just keep them watered in the hot weather so they can settle in. Or you can get some umbrellas and dig them into the ground in a row over the top of them (I’m joking of course 😆 but I bet there’s someone out there who would do that 😆). Wishing you good luck and a great week ♥️
Hi Janette. Thank you for your advice about the Heuchera. They really are beautiful so I will work with them to keep them going. I might try moving them to see if it makes any difference. Have a lovely evening. ❤️
Hello 👋 Janette, wow you’ll be able to gift/ trade your beautiful heuchera 🤗. I never even considered this, I will definitely be able to do it next year as I just planted my first batch of heuchera last spring/ summer and fall. They are still just getting established, but I can’t wait to share the love and beauty of them. They have become my favorite ground over for shade where previously it was hosta. They are ok, especially the new colorful ones, but heuchera 🥇. Thanks for sharing❤. Did you dip them in rooting hormone?
Hello Elizabeth, no I didn’t dip in hormone rooting, although I guess you could. Heuchera are just so gorgeous, and the slugs and snails don’t like them either 🎉🎉🎉 so glad you’ve discovered them. I planted some straight back into the ground and I’m going to give most of the others away. Hope you’re having a lovely week 🥰
Hello👋my friend, good to know thank you. This is a checklist project for next year when they get nice and bushy like yours🤗. Aww that’s so sweet of you, I would do the same, spreading planty love. Now a few people will have enthusiastic gardening merch lol. Enjoy the rest of your week, it’s halfway to the weekend yeah. And no rain in the forecast like the last weekends here in NY. I hope you are sunny too!
😊😊😊 you’re a lovely friend. We have the Coronation here this weekend so I’m very excited about that but we’re forecast rain all weekend so that’s not good for all the people sleeping over night to line the procession. But it will still be wonderful 🇬🇧😊
🫶. The world is watching, the coronation is going to be a beautiful event🥰. King Charles will make a wonderful 👑. Rain won’t dampen the excitement, and prayers for the people sleeping outside. If anyone knows England, rain is always in the forecast 😂and hopefully they brought tents and umbrellas 🌂.
Yes you’re right, if there’s anything we are used to, it’s the possibility of rain 😆 and I’m sure all the people will be well prepared. It’s very exciting and it’s so lovely to know the whole world is watching. Brings us all together 🎉🎉🎉
Wow, my heuchera in South Africa don’t get that big! I water ever week for 30 minutes using a fine mist. Afternoon and morning shade but the summers get VERY hot and dry.
Hi there Annie, I just think I’m lucky here that heucheras love my climate (south east coast of England) and they seem to do really well. Have a great week 🌳🩷
Good morning Cindy and thanks for watching. They definitely do root and grow on to be new plants. Of course a few did die but one year on from this video and I’m pleased to say most are happy new plants. Hope you’re having a great weekend 🩵💜
Hi there Barbara, thanks for watching! There’s nothing you can do once tulips lose their petals. Unfortunately the flower has finished then. It’s such a shame they don’t last longer. 🌷
so.. did you replant anything like the main stem/roots back in the original hole? Or did you divide it all? and where do you stop? I have some SUPER leggy ones.. but they have barely got uncovered by snow.. and have super tiny new leaves.
Hello there Hillary. I have put some of them back straight into the ground and I will give some of the pots away to friends and family. You still have snow? Where do you live? Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a lovely week 🥰
Do you have any idea how old those are, that stem was like a small tree trunk. I never thought about dividing them while still planted, I seen Paul, at Paul T's World divide a hosta that way. Hope yours all root, I'm sure your mom and garden friends would love 1 or 2.
Hi Wende, that centre stem was huge. I remember planting them in 2020. I’ve stuck some straight into the soil and I think I’ll give the others away. If you just cut one in half then I think it would be a good idea to reset the first bit lower while you’re at it. They have shallow roots and tend to kind of heave themselves upwards. 🥰
Oh yes I am subscribed to Jes, but problem is I’m subscribed to about 100 Garden channels 😆😆 I have an addiction to heucheras, and garden TH-cam channels 😆😆🥰
Well I feel totally honoured that you always watch me then Wende, because as much as we’d like to watch every video from everyone we follow, we’d need to put the rest of our lives on hold 😆🥰🤪
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener I just go down the list, I open blue dots, some I don't watch if it's something I don't need to know, or 15 mins of weeding and planting..aka..garden answer.
Hi there. We need to wait now until late spring before dividing and this is to give the divisions time to develop a root system before their first winter. I’ll be doing lots more next spring too. I actually had so many Heuchera plants from this method, so many I was giving them away. I did lose a couple but it really does work. Hope you’re having a great weekend ❤️🩷
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener Hi Janette, my Heuchera is an old plant that has never been out of it's pot, I was just wondering if I could get some other plants from it now?
I’m not sure! But if you really want to give it a go now, just before winter, why don’t you try maybe taking a handful of cuttings and still leave some stems with leaves on the mother plant, and then if those cuttings don’t take you still have more left to try the rest in spring? That’s what I’d be tempted to do. And if you have a greenhouse or a coldframe, even if it’s just a makeshift clear plastic box, then maybe that’s enough protection for the cuttings. Worth a try ❤️
Buongiorno Jannette, io sono Mimmina dall'Italia abito a 30 km da Milano, il suo giardino è molto bello complimenti. Quante volte occorre annaffiare le talee?
Hello there Maria and thank you for joining me all the way from Milan 🇮🇹 I would just water mine a little now and then, not too much but just enough so that the soil doesn’t dry out. This is an old video now so I’m pleased to tell you that most of them did take and I gave lots away as it made so many new plants I didn’t know what to do with them all 😂

@@TheEnthusiasticGardener lucky family and friends ! Great gifts!
Hiya Janette! I’m new to this channel- I typed in ‘how to divide heuchera’ and there you were ! And what a brilliant video-exemplary really.
I couldn’t wait to tackle mine, and I got 9 new plants, all replanted and have started to grow
Thank you! Loving your previous videos from your lovely garden
All the best!
How big did they get in their first season after the division?
Hi Mahmuda, I will show them to you in my next video. They’ve done so well! 🩷
Thank you for showing how to do this, mine need divided this year :)
Great video - very good advice - thank you
Good morning Diane and thank you!
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener 🥰
I have to do the same with mine, thanks for the video
Hello there Semsima Ma and thank you so much for watching. Have a lovely week 🥰
3 of each variety please!!! Crumbs you could start a Heuchera nursery with all of those. I did the same with one of mine last week, but mine was much smaller than yours and straggly. None of mine have mounded, I'm wondering if they're struggling with my clay soil x
Hi Debbie, I am going to give most away and I’ve put some straight into the border 😊🥰
Very helpful and concise. Thank you. If I divide and replant in the fall, will the plant be robust and full in the spring?
Would that piece of old stem root?
Good morning Cindy and thanks for watching. They definitely do root and grow on to be new plants. Of course a few did die but one year on from this video and I’m pleased to say most are happy new plants. Hope you’re having a great weekend 🩵💜
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener thanks!
What to do when tulips lose their petaks
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener
Right there with ya. I subscibe to 110 channels, I'm easily at 100 for gardeners.
Well I feel totally honoured that you always watch me then Wende, because as much as we’d like to watch every video from everyone we follow, we’d need to put the rest of our lives on hold 😆🥰🤪
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener
I just go down the list, I open blue dots, some I don't watch if it's something I don't need to know, or 15 mins of weeding and planting..aka..garden answer.
Hi Janette , is it to late to divide now, late October?
This is an old video now so I’m pleased to tell you that most of them did take and I gave lots away as it made so many new plants I didn’t know what to do with them all 😂
Does this mean you're a heucholic 😊
😆😆 yes I think I need to find a meeting for my problem 😆🥰
I'll join too😂
