  • We're trying to buildout a 1971 Airstream with higher quality products and better technology than current ones on the market today. With a budget of just $35,000, this should be interesting :)

OK, hear me out on this. The finishing touch for the exterior of the Airstream......an old-style NASA decal. During the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo days, astronauts were transported to the Launch Pad in an Airstream RV.

This is really a fun project ! I literally grew up in an airstream trailer. Back in the ‘60’s and 70’s my parents were teachers in Washington State and we spent many weekends, summers and holidays traveling the US and Canada. I was often the only kid on those long big airstream caravans and traversed the Rocky Mountains with a hundred “grandpas and grandmas” 😂. Someone had a big commercial grill in the their truck and set it up every morning to cook flap jacks, eggs and sausage for everyone. Fun times ! I miss that old land yacht. I hope it brings much joy to your lives and you create as many good memories as I had ! OMG I sound like I’m in a rocking chair 🤣. I want to rebuild one too !!

I love car, boat, engine refurb/rebuild TH-cam content, and I will generally watch two or three ‘episodes’ before subscribing. I like what you do (the airstream is something different) and the style of video presentation, the hours spent setting up shots, cutting and editing are appreciated. I am so pleased the ‘algorithm’ found your channel for me, I have liked and subscribed, looking forward to the next episode.

I owned a 1967 Cessna 150 for about 10 years. The build of your trailer is very similar to general aviation aircraft. They too are constructed with aluminum and lots and lots of rivets. These aircraft air-frames last forever. Corrosion can be an issue but overall the structures hold up. MDF bolted to a steel frame ( typical of other trailer builds) is going to have a limit to its life. Aluminum will last much longer. Great build and fun to watch. Thank you.

I don‘t know the street laws in USA, but in europe is it not allowed to have a mirror finish at any car. Tank Trucks made from stainless steel have round circles at the surface of the tank to brake the mirror finish.
It not allowed because you can distract other drivers with your vehicle. When the sun is pointing at your vehicle it reflects the light everywhere.

I Move the Axle back, re-deck it. Framed it & with side panels going up about the 2/3 the way up. Then put a Canvas roof came down the sides about 1/3 down, it was like a Conestoga. Became my Travel trailer when I did Retail shows. Now, I'm repurposing it once again, making a mini camper out of it. I'm about 1/2 way there. The roof is aluminum, a window on either side. looking good.

What a great video and you two are such great people! Such enthusiasm and drive through the lows to create something quite special. But you also hit the nail on the head - in the face of cheap, throwaway things these days and low prices we expect - the Airstreams are still of the ‘you get what you pay for’ and once people get their heads around that concept it makes perfect sense.

Our first RV is a 17' Casita (fiberglass) 2019, it costs more but like Airstream it should last way more than 15 yrs. It is good for weekend trips and even a week trip. Our last trip to Big Bend for the New Year we camped with an Airstream group (about 6 of them). I thought they were great, even a couple "restores" and watching these videos is like visual relive from their stores. Anyway wife retires in a couple years and might try this project myself😀.

You are still making a MAJOR error. The Airstream of the future will be modular. As Airstreams age there is a percentage of them that become wiped out by things like trees falling on them. IF you could simply unbolt or use a rivit grinder to separate the bad from the good then you could park an Airstream, and add additional sections so that you eventually have something that does not go on the roads but is a whole complex of additions making for a large house.

Very cool build . Had some friends in Wyoming that thought it would be cool to polish there airplane , after two weeks they brought a crew in from Colorado to finish what they had started. I had a shop and we did polishing , we wore full ( disposable) suits to close off any openings we had respirator’s with outside air pumped in and a booth with a filtration system . And yes you do end up looking like a chimney sweep . That’s why polishing is expensive . Cant wait to see how this turns out . Thanks

Airstream is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Overrated. Its NOT worth it. The only reason is SEAMS good is because it is better than most RV's BUT not because its soooo good...its because MOST Trailers SUCK really bad! so it makes Airstreams look good....but they suck too. There was a Better Competitor called AVION. However THOR the owners of Airstream bought Fleetwood which owns AVION probably to eliminate the competition.

  • @timoblubb
    @timoblubb 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Can the Sprayfoam endure the shaking and rattling without coming off in the long term? If you ever need to change anything on the hull, sprayfoam will be in your way. Also spraying the wiring seem like a VERY bad idea in at least 3 ways. (Adjusting/Changing Wiring, Wiring against uninsulated outer shell that might get quite hot in the sun, Wiring rubbing on the metal, I'm not sure about the flamability of the foam. I guess it is not flamable, so I guess that at least won't be on the list

Hate to be a wet rag here, but...
While polished metal looks cool, it's not so cool when it reflects sun back into your eyes and messes with your vision while you're driving.
That's likely why Airstream put that coat on since the 1990s.
    🤷🏽‍♀️
    Just my opinion.

  • @kevincaruthers5412

    Not bees. Wasps.
And even if it lasts 40 years, it is still too damn much with a $200K price tag, in my opinion. (Your $35K budget is very reasonable.)
For that price I could rent a destination cabin for vacation for pretty much the rest of my life and someone else does the maintenance.
But, for the people who have that kind of cash to throw around...
    They are really pretty.

You should look at Lance RVs, better quality then Airstream at more less the same price but usually slightly cheaper. Airstream is fine, but there's better. They aren't the top dog, just the prettiest and most popular. That counts for something but there are plenty of RVs doing 20-25-30yrs on the road that aren't Airstream. Here's to you Winnebago!

Is the Airstream worth the price? Yep, and then some. Not only are they an icon, they are a shining example of what America is all about. And, don't forget, your budget only factors in the stuff you've bought.... not all the other things that Airstream would have had to pay when they built that trailer originally. Electricity, consumables like drill bits and Clecos, and the wages for their employees all has to be factored in to the cost. If you paid yourselves even $5/hour as a wage, how many hours do you have in so far? 😁

I highly recommend putting one every device just before you and possibly a breaker if you can find it.

For me personally, this will be my retirement home soon versus the occasional camping vehicle so why shouldn't I have all of the comforts of a home. Besides, I don't do well with tiny spaces. Van life would drive me nuts. 😅

We did a lot of the same things what we did do that you did do is we got bamboo flooring totally worth it batteries we went with a LTO battery chemistry 20,000 cycles. Totally worth it really safe and they don’t catch fire like prismatic war lithium ion or a lithium cobalt, the most they’ll ever do is get a little warm in eject seem

In my research, I have figured that Flexible Solar Panels are not sturdy enough to be relied on. Be careful.

If your r value on your insulation is better than an airstream and you use the same or better ac, you could get a situation where the ac doesnt dehumidify your air properly. It will bring down the temp too quickly…

you'll find out why flexable solar panels suck soon enough, plan to replace those in about 5-7yrs.

When I was a kid they were so ugly now I am 61 that would be it. Gone through a motor home and a few fiberglass boats. Live in western Washington and if it can’t get wet stay wet or go under water then nope.

i dont get this fascination with mirror finishes. the reflections look ugly. it's bright and reflective. satin finishes are the way to go. they look clean and smooth.

I owned a 'stream. never again. a 'glass trailer is far far superior. think a 'stream has airstream when towing? nope. a 'stream lasts 40 years? nope, not without serious corrosion and rot. ya gotta think your time is worth zero to resurrect a 'stream. ya gotta be insane to pay the asking prices for new or used.

I noticed that at time 8:53 with the wood in the pocket hole fixture that the plywood looks like it is bamboo core plywood. Is that what it is or what is it? Thanks. BTW nice build.

please do a better job of titleing the videos for which episode they are. I am joining late to the series and ended up watching so many out of order. Great stuff really like it!

I don't know about American trailer but the European trailers made out of sheet metal aluminium or some polyester more modern ones, easily last over 25 years. I love the looks of an air-stream but it is too much money or too much work for what you get in the end compared to modern trailers

Avion built a better trailer although Airstream had nicer double pane windows

I am pretty sure that plastic would have pulled of easily with the use of a heat gun to soften the adhesive.

@Kels and Jay I realize you both spent a ton of money not only to buy the airstream but to fix it up as well, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel/a finish line you’ll cross and hopefully it will all pay off in the end.

Hollow pop rivets are bad. they will work loose in time. You need to use the solid-type rivets from Cherry.
