This is a great breakdown as usual and I have to say that I've gained some level of respect for Harden, but I think most fans of any sport will agree that exploiting a game's rulebook does not make the game better for the spectator. Maybe that's too general but what I mean is that I don't know how anybody can watch that arm hook move and not get pissed off. If you're strategy for offense is to try to create fouls out of thin air then the only thing that you are showing people is that there are loopholes that need to be closed. There is such a thing as the spirit of the game, after all. Harden is like that guy in pickup games that challenges absolutely everything the other team does, because they care more about winning than actually playing the game.
Yeah it's not his fault though, the rules should be designed for the sport to be more fun and interesting to watch and not allow for a guy getting his most of his points off of fouls and travels.
Couldn't have said it any better, brother. Foul-baitting is the most boring, eye-rolling, sleeper shit I've ever seen. Imagine paying hundreds of dollars to watch a bunch of actors shoot free throws.
i dont disagree. it's like the hack a shaq; what a dirty way to win a series. so maybe the arm hook needs to be looked at just like they changed the rip through for KD. but the zero/gather step rule seems legit to me
Omfg it's not about money. The NBA is a non profit. Only the franchises themselves can make money. Ur aloud to take three steps in the NBA and the first step off ur dribble isn't counted.
@Jordan Williams Bruh the NBA is making money one way or another. Houston is getting ticket sales one way or another. Harden is so expert with his gather it pisses me off. But it's helped me play in iso situations when others trust me to make a play. With the three step layup the 1st step (zero step) is named as such because at that point you can still dribble and make a play with the ball. Only once you pick it up with both hands is it a dead ball, meaning you have two steps afterwards.
@Jordan Williams Also did you forget Houston basically cost them the Chinese market so currently the NBA isn't giving them favours. Yet Harden averages 34 a game.
I’m ok with the gather steps, but the arm hook is nonsense, he’s initiating the entanglement, it’s similar to pushing off. You shuldn’t be able to use your off arm to bring a defender into a compromising position.
I know many people hate some of Harden's "techniques," I am not a big fan of them too but one day, I will miss them when he retired. There won't be a second James Harden.

My beef has never been with Harden. I think he’s smart and incredibly crafty for manipulating the rules to his benefit. My beef is with the NBA for allowing and changing the rules to encourage it.
@Jordan Williams Exactly, this is what pisses me off. Yes, all the stuff Jimmy said in the video was true, but he didn't mention the excessive flopping and bitching that Harden does to get to the line. I definitely agree that he bends the rules to get to where he is now, and Jimmy did a good job spinning that in a positive light, but it's pretty easy to spin it in a negative way too.
@@absvd6114 Flopping ain't greatness my guy. If Harden didn't flop (even outside of the arm hook which shouldn't be legal, why would they reward players who were trying to get fouled), he wouldn't be looked at as "great" because he wouldn't score nearly as much as he does from getting to the line.
Exactly. Hardeen is indeed a genious scorer. With that said Jimmy & the other TH-camrs defending it should wait some more years to fairly pass judgement on he's play style. To see if it's effective.
Not sure anything in there wasnt already known. Much of his moves are based on phenomenal ballhandling strength footwork etc. But pretending like he doesnt routinely break the rules when he takes a 6th or 7th step is silly and at least for myself that has always been the annoyance. Not the stuff that's legal now that wasnt 30 years ago but the stuff that is clearly illegal even by today's rulebook but just gets let go anyway cause it results in buckets.
@@craigjohnston5781 It looks like he takes 7 steps, but if you break it down you'll realize it's three steps one being the gather step and is completely in the rules.
I see you glorifying a style of play thats ruining the game. Lets set our gaze on the defensive end,.. or remember that he's got 4 other PRO players with him on the court at all times that could be utilized... The man can shoot and create a shot.. but its more suited for 3v3 half court lol
Notice during the iso chart Westbrook was second. It’s literally unstoppable, one of them breaks down the defender, someone comes over to help, they hit the open man, and they have corner specialists like P.J. Tucker to knock down the threes
A double step back IS travelling, it takes 4 steps, so even with a zero step it is travelling. The arm hook he uses is sometimes illegal as well as he initiates the tie-up by wrapping his arm around theirs, so he's grabbing them...so yeah, he does break the rules.
Harden's lethal scoring ability is what makes him elite, but don't forget, he's leading all SGs in assists per game, rebounds per game, blocks per game, and steals per game this year (as well as leading the NBA in PPG)
Another thing to consider -- Harden's ability to get 16 points per game from isolation speaks to his INTENT to do so. In other words, few other players have the balls to be that selfish, and flaunt it. Once he enters into an iso situation, he sticks with it, wearing his defender down, while the rest of his team kicks back and watches him work. I think that Harden's brilliance at iso scoring has the unintended effect of diminishing his teammates' interest and involvement in the game. And what evidence can I offer? The number of NBA titles he has. What you're missing here is the fact that most everyone besides Harden is playing Basketball, the TEAM game. He is playing Isoball, AKA Heroball. Others, including Ja Morant, Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving are Isoball wizards with no titles. It's not a team-friendly style of play, which is why he has never, and will never win the league. Which is fine by me.
I’ve been a Harden hater for a while, but you’ve convinced me he’s actually incredibly talented. I didn’t know about the zero step and arm hook rules. Great video
Harden's euro is the one thing I give him big props for. The rest of his stuff is just him exaggerating contact to get whistles, and him constantly shooting till the shots start to go in. He has so many iso points because of how many iso shots he attempt. No one else attempts iso as much as him.
JROCK50054 yeah man, the stuff works obviously. They’re fourth in a crazy good Western Conference. You saying no one attempts as many iso then would imply that dame could do the same thing and be a top 5 team in the west?

Exactly. I don't get why some people haven't figured this out. Mike D'antoni system looks great, and always produces wins in the regular season. But how many times has his teams been exposed once the playoffs start? Defense is more of a factor in the playoffs, and D'antoni doesn't give a damn about that side of the ball. Just go out and try to score 130 a night, and hope you don't give up 131.😏
nacho cheese dude have you watched a basketball game this entire year? His defense his been great, especially vital for the rockets when they have no true centers.
He knows what he’s doing and he’s been doing it for years so he knows how to hide illegal move when he shoots he jumps on people which causes a foul especially when he steps back like five steps
That chart all though factual is so skewed . It’s not a coincidence Russ was second on that list . It’s just the offense they run . Obviously he’s a great iso player but there’s other guys in the league who would be near him if there offense was literally just iso and go
I actually had never heard of the 0 step before this. It explains so much. I would always just shake my head and wonder how NBA refs never caught those blatant travels.
Some of these “zero steps” are travels. Others are close. But the whole idea you don’t count obvious first steps is stupid too begin with. Good on Harden for figuring it out, but it should be changed.
That's a really hard rule to change. If they change that then most of the leagues drives to the basket will count as travels. There's really no good way to re word that rule.
It has ruined basketball for me. I don't care if it is part of the rules, it is not aesthetically pleasing. It has also made defense almost impossible because there is no way to time basically an extra step. Most people didn't grow up playing basketball that way, especially on the defensive end.
8:45 This "double step back" is clearly a travel. Harden has clearly gathered the ball before his left foot first strikes the ground, so the second time it does so is step#3.

Jordan would also jump to shoot, but the defense was in the way, so like 5 seconds later (before he had landed) he would bring the ball to his hip and shoot from there. It would be hard to be a defender and keep your hands off that nonsense.

The Chamberlain dunk-from-the-foul line may be a myth but, again, they widened the lane because of him. And they made a rule penalizing off-ball fouls. And a revision, or maybe an invention. of the rule against offensive goaltending. And... I think there were others. And for Alcindor (Abdul Jabbar) the college game outlawed dunking...
Johnathan Lo If that’s the case, then “gathering the ball” should be listed as a step. There is no I gathered the ball and then took two steps, what kinda bush league ish is that?
When the refs swallow the whistle in the playoffs (and don’t let him get away with flopping in the paint or on threes), it becomes very difficult for him to get that 35
I personally believe that in these situations, the NBA starts to shift to far off from FIBA basketball, which simply makes it less fun to watch. Most of us out there playing basketball on amateur or semi-pro level look at the NBA to be inspired. James Harden is not inspiring to watch, we can't pull of any of his moves. NBA wants this big show, but a lot of us just wanna watch good basketball :)
Lmao , its literally a skill to be able to get to the line ?? If you play basketball you would know this why not go to the like and score a easy 12-18 points ?
Im Elevating Because if you’ve ever watched him in playoffs you realise this is not a winning strategy. He plays some possessions for fouls and when he doesn’t get them come playoffs he ends up wasting 5-6 possessions a game. We all know he can tear it up in reg season when refs protect players, but when defence gets tougher and whistles become more rare he’s only had one good series in his life.
Arm hooking should be a foul, if im called in highachool for hooking my arm around someone to get past them, then why isnt he getting called for purposely making contact to draw a foul when the defender is playing by the rules
Because he sucks the refs off before every game. JK of course, but I don't understand how with how many blatant flops/offensive fouls actually don't get called. They let Harden slide way to much with this... In the regular season, that is. Playoff time they be like "Nah, not here fam. Not here". That's why he can't win. -_-
@@JROCK50054 he couldn't win because he would always end up playing the 3 headed monster Golden State for the last 4 years. And like most that played them during that time...they loss as well. That has been almost the only team that has been able to beat him...AND Lebron. So why doesn't Harden get a pass like Lebron? 🤔
6:45 This stat is not accurate. You posted the highest season FTA averages for MJ and AI, but not for Harden. If you posted Harden's FTA for this season, it'd be tied for the highest ever (11.9). And he's getting to the line that often while taking 5.5 fewer shots per game than MJ did in 86-87. Really, your X-axis makes no sense. Why are you plotting FTA by PPG? You should be plotting FTA by FGA, which would show that Harden is an outlier: he's averaging a record number of free throws per shot attempt. In other words, he is flopping at a historic rate, and getting to the line more often than anyone ever has.
Actually you could be right. When I saw the X axis I was thinking “what does PPG have to do with anything?” He doesn’t have to actually score a ton of points to get to the line a million times. If we saw the FTA percentage then we could see for sure
Dan Fox I could be wrong but I think he’s showing this stat because ai and Jordan shot more free throws than harden and harden still managed to put up more ppg. Many people claim that he scores so much because he shoots way more free throws than other nba players. And in the video he clearly explained he’s not flopping he’s just playing smart. He gets hate just cause others are not smart or skilled enough to do the things he does.
Another outlier aspect that would be interesting is how many FTAs per jumpshots outside of 20 feet. Harden shoots basically the same number of free throws while taking far more deep jumpers than AI and MJ making that stat even less relevant.
He showed harden this year compared to other years of 34-36 pts per game. Last year harden averaged 36 shooting more free throws but it’s him this year compared to their best
You can’t get mad at him at the end of the day. Basketball is a mind game, and from the way things seem, Harden is much craftier and knows how to use the rules to his advantage; that’s actually what most should be doing.
Malone was a pretty dirty player too...his clearing out after grabbing a board had to injure more players than I could count...and I was a little kid watching him!

@Jordan Williams guess I'm 13 years old and educated.
Jordan Williams you’re the 13 year old
@Jordan Williams Bruh the NBA is making money one way or another.

That has been almost the only team that has been able to beat him...AND Lebron. So why doesn't Harden get a pass like Lebron? 🤔
wait I'm not tryna be a dck or anything but is it getting "passed" someone or getting "past" someone?
@@knicks8099 past sorry
Dan Fox my thoughts exactly. The PPG had absolutely nothing to do with FTA
He can't keep getting away with itttt, he cant keep getting away with it
Jesse, what are you talking about Jesse...
Mr white, he can't do that Mr White. Also we need to cook
You can’t get mad at him at the end of the day. Basketball is a mind game, and from the way things seem, Harden is much craftier and knows how to use the rules to his advantage; that’s actually what most should be doing.
Yes sir H-town every duy
SunOnShine they’re talking bout basketball bro
@SunOnShine its not related to the topic at all
And can't get his team pass the 2nd round
@Marten Dekker its not just him. The league favors offense so they let these slide
This is why James Harden is going down as one of the best scorers in NBA history
He already is
With an asterisk.
*during this period, playing defense was automatically a foul.
The Chosen One he said one of the best scorers not the best Kd is there too obviously
The Chosen One he said “ONE of the best scorers” dumbass.
@@wesleypriddy8698 does that mean defensive players should have an asterisk during the 80s and 90s because it's harder to play defense now?

Lmao dude just running his mouth..he didn't know
That thick girl, is me.
@@amanda.._.. HMU
It’s me Amanda bruh
“Take seven steps skip and a jump”😂😂😂 that’s the best move in the nba
Karl Malone’s whining and Sheed’s cussing changed the tech rules
Malone was a pretty dirty player too...his clearing out after grabbing a board had to injure more players than I could count...and I was a little kid watching him!
Dont forget the teams coach, that coach is an pro-ISO play coach.
What's the coach's name?
Mike dantoni
You mean the 7 second offense guy?
Jacob he is pro-iso, but yeah he started the 7 second offense
Bryan_350_ again, that was when he was a coach on the suns with Nash, right?
And when we needed him the most he returned...
Everybody here gonna add all the james harden things jxmy mentioned to their game😭😭
Hell yeah!
