Colonialism

  • The world we live in today is quite special. In the sense that we are all connected in one way or another. For example, you could easily buy a plane ticket and get to the other-side of the world in less than a day or use technology to send a video of a cat to your relatives in Minnesota.
But the world wasn’t always like this (obviously). Many important events and movements led to the development of the world we know and sometimes love. Today we will look at one of them.

The US is an empire in all but name. It has taken land and swept across the world, owning islands and territory.
It would still own the Philippines if it hadn't come to its senses and it did try to take Canada, but was beaten back the British.

I would also love to see a summary with the emphasis being MORE on the role Catholicism played on stealing and dominating distinct cultures with their mission to colonize in the name of god. And even how they STILL actively do this with church missions or door to door.

India was the richest country in the world where civilization flourished. Europeans colonized my country taking advantage of our calm nature and the then weak kingdoms and their internal feuds. This is NO good and can not be held as a virtuous deed for any colonies that suffered huge losses. This colonialism looted my country's wealth, a country that was often referred to as 'Sone ki Chidiya' (The Golden Bird). I shall always be ashamed of the fact that the then people of my country did not see through those colonizers and hit them back so hard that they were reminded of their foolishness to colonize a country which taught so much to the world since the beginning of the civilization. I am not here to speak for the other countries as they have the right to do so for themselves. I am here to say for sure that my country Bharat (India) did not need any civilization lessons from the colonizers (as that is what they put forth in their defense of colonizing a country). I am grateful to the leaders from 1857 to 1947 i.e. from virtuous queen like Rani Lakshmi Bai and her allies who fought in the first war of Independence in 1857 to Subash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and all those brave men who understood the nerve of the enemy to take up self defense as their way of struggle over non-violence at those times till India gained its independence in 1947.
I lastly point out that even with the end of colonialism, the ways they have destroyed and manipulated my country's sacred history has turned the generations since then to adopt the ways of colonizers; believing them to be of superior cadre than our own ancient idols. This is a bigger loss than it sounds.
    I stand against colonization.
Jai Hind. Jai Maa Bharati. Namaste.

USA can’t really be seen as anti-colonialism anymore. That’s exactly why they were humbled in Vietnam.

@@iloveyouiyes5439 Pardon me, but I find your comment both unsupportable and incomprehensible. No right or left in what I assume is the US - which is certainly far from being *America" with or without the Capital? I'm always had the impression that the US needs a substantial trainer wheel on its right side to prevent it falling over, but of course there are left wing leanings in part of the populace.. I would agree there is a ruling clique in the US - that's true in every country- and that the rest of us get to pay for the privilege of being ruled. As to the issue of whether we are "colonist", that is a truth universally acknowledged. We are all descendents of migrants, presumably from central Africa, although there is speculation for parts of the Middle East. Whatever is the truth, the inhabitants of Asia, the Americas, Australasia, Africa and Europe all trace their lineage to successive waves of migration, If you raise your eyebrows re "Africa" recall the Muslim invasions in the North and the Bantu migrations in the South. As a generality, we have all gained from beating up other people. Is that fair. No. Do we have a right to complain because we have less of the booty than others,? Probably not.. However the least we owe history is to acknowledge that we share an underlying guilt.

“Colonialism is about setting up colonies” sigh, bruh let’s not use the definition in the explanation. I still have no idea what it is. Is it just non-military expansion of influence? I have no idea what you mean when you repeat ‘set up colonies’. Does it mean ‘people who moved there with their own laws?’ Or did they just move into a place like gentrifiers do

THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY BY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH - The doctrine of discovery refers to a principle in public international law under which, when a nation “discovers” land, it directly acquires rights on that land. The 1493 Papal decree aimed to justify Christian European explorers' claims on land and waterways they allegedly discovered, and promote Christian domination and superiority, and has been applied in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Americas.
The Doctrine of Discovery had been used for centuries , speakers in the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues stressed today, urging the expert body to study the creation of a special mechanism, under United Nations auspices.

Knowledge and advancement in technology should be shared among all human being to enrich us all. And it should not be an excuse to enslave steal and destroy other cultures. Maybe this is the lesson that we should learn.

'White privilege', what do I have access to in a western country that someone with a 'protected' characteristic doesn't. What privilege does a poor white man have over a rich black man? It's sad that schools aren't teaching this because ideas over white privilege, the slave trade and colonisation are all discussed and incorrectly addressed on online forums. The lack of realisation that every race has been enslaved. Whites by the ottomans, Blacks by the Americans, The Chinese by the Mongols. The mere fact that even races that share the same colour skin enslaved each other based on class shows an ignorance to what a so called 'White privilege' is. People do awful things to one another, and now you get to sit online, every right under your belt that you share with your peers and you truly believe that someone else in society is secretly given a leg up because they happened to be born with the correct colour of pigment.
How arrogant of a thought to believe that only 60 years ago we thought segregation was over only to find ourselves now pointing fingers at different races, classes and ideologies because we haven't got the things we want, instead of getting those things on our own merit. Tax the rich, affirmative action and get more women in STEM instead of getting rich, studying hard and getting the shit we want just because you can.

Colonialism was a net positive for the world. Being an American, we benefited from being a colony of England since we were able to learn valuable practices from the British such as common law, Judeo Christian values and a cultural framework. We’re getting our independence but our country has been forever shaped and blessed because of it’s colonial roots. England and Great Britain as a whole benefited from being Colonized by Rome in the first century BC. Even the most brutal examples of colonialism that we see in South America still have a better result today then before the colonizers arrived. Pre-Columbus America was not an ideal like place.
During the colonial period in Africa, the majority of the continent was a functioning place. You could travel and do business in relative safety. In parts of southern Africa like Rhodesia both north and south and South Africa, the standard of living for everybody was higher than any other part of Africa. This continued even after colonialism officially ended as long as the original colonial power structure was still in place. Once majority rule took over every country that went that direction turned into a train wreck of tribal wars, coup d’états, ethnic cleansing and failed states.
