  • Best Family Get Away!!! Greenwood Lake New York!!
Greenwood Lake is a historic lake near New York in the Skylands region that provides all kinds of entertainment, including water sports. Greenwood Lake, also known as Long Pond, is a natural reservoir overlooked by Bearfoot Mountain Ridge, having the best scenic views and recreational spots. But did you know that it has been a vacation destination for more than 120 years?
Today, we will discuss Greenwood Lake and its different must-visit recreational sites. We will discuss some facts that you might not know about this lake. So, be sure to stick around until the end to know what exciting things you can do in Greenwood Lake.
Greenwood Lake is one of the largest freshwater bodies in Orange County, New York. This lake is located on the border of New York and New Jersey, surrounded by forests, parks, and mountains. It's not only famous for recreational activities in summer. Yes, you can enjoy downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing in other seasons, making it a year-round resort area. Ice fishing might be a new experience for you, so you must try it once on a frozen Greenwood lake.
Before getting deeper into it, let's give you an overview of the lake. This interstate lake is approximately 7 miles long and lies just 50 miles northwest of New York, covering the surface area of 1920 acres. It's in the town of Warwick and the village of Greenwood Lake. It is the source of the Wanaque River that is the drinking water supply for approximately 3.5 million people of Northern New Jersey.
It is a two-in-one lake, which means it is natural as well as man-made. The river on the New York side exists naturally, while one on the New Jersey's side is man-made, where a dam was constructed in 1836. At first, far back before the 1700s, Munsee Indians inhabited here and named the river "Quampium." After the 1700s, new European settlers renamed it "Long Pond," which later changed to "Greenwood Lake."
Greenwood Lake is surrounded by natural beauty having a pure, fresh environment with lots of recreational spots. The opportunities for activity and leisure in the Greenwood Lake area seem endless. Take a romantic drive with your partner around the lake along a hillside between woodland and the lake below.
Whenever people visit a place like this, their priority is to visit the beach. Here you will find two public beaches offering swimming, fishing, boating, and many more other water activities. It is considered among one of the top bass fishing lakes in New Jersey as it is loaded with largemouth, smallmouth bass, catfish, and chain pickerel.
Water enthusiasts will find this lake the most relaxing and exciting to enjoy different water activities. There is a range of activities to suit every age group. Go and rent a paddleboard from Jersey Paddle Boards to experience standup paddleboards and Kayaks. If you want to fly like Ironman, then Jet High Watersports will teach you with their special instructor. Just strap on water jet boots, and after a few lessons, you will be flying over Greenwood Lake.
Apart from this, you can rent a boat to explore it more. There's heavy boat traffic on this lake, so book one for yourself before arriving here. While boating, you will see a grand home on Chapel Island, which was a church years ago, only accessible through boats, but now it's a residence of a judge and local orchard owners. Paddle boating or sailing on this lengthy lake towards the river gives a unique experience.
Greenwood lake is almost surrounded by parks having natural beauty, attracting tourists toward itself. Hiking in these parks is a great option; they have trails of all levels for people of all ages including kids. Consider going to Sterling Forest State Park near the lake for hiking. Here in Sterling Park, you can hike to Fire Tower to get a spectacular view of Greenwood town and its surroundings. Other than this, you can enjoy mountain biking and horse riding too. So don't miss out on experiencing these.

I saw GW lake in the late 50', early 60's. When the Morris canal was working, GW lake had a feeder canal to add water on the eastern side of the canal.
