    This makes sense; hitters are already tuned to hit high pitches that are in the 90's, so pitching in the 80's is just making it easy. By contrast, throwing that super-slow stuff unbalances hitters who just can't adjust over just a few pitches.
    In short: you're probably better off throwing 55 then 85.

We were always last on all tournaments, but then we got some wins after all the pitchers reached their pitch limit and position players came in. Two pitchers were special, one had his third baseball match and had to be taught pitching rules before the match and second one was recovering from a surgery and couldn't even do full arm motion. But the hitters kept missing.

We're not talking about a roll of the die here; is it just lucky when they hit a homerun too? or is that skill? or is it just whatever's convenient for the point that you're trying to make at the time? You ever see a post-game interview where the players just chalk it up to being lucky or unlucky that day? No, because at high level play most of what the players are doing is intentional. The hitters missed because the pitcher was throwing them off their game by mixing it up. He *made* them miss. Yeah, a decent hitter could probably adjust given more time, but that's the whole point. They weren't given enough time to adjust, and it shows in how easily he cleaned up that inning.

    This guy reminds me of the only time I pitched in HS and ever. I was a utility player in my sophomore year but ended up starting catching because I was better defensive player due to our wild pitchers 😂. We were getting hammered and ran out of pitcher. I've been catching for the entire game. Last inning, coach puts me in with the second string catcher. I don't even pitch I just mess around during practice especially warming up. I didn't have a fast fast ball but I had a lot of junk pitches. The catcher kept calling fastballs and I was getting rocked. Gave up 2 runs. Coach came out and said just throw what you want and let's see. I threw a bunch of those looping 12-6 curves, couple knucklers and sinkers. Not a single fast ball. I got two strikeouts and a grounder. I remember one of the kid walking back to the dugout complaining to his coach my pitches were too slow. 😅😂

    • @thisishandlenumber2048
      @thisishandlenumber2048 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I think it's even harder for MLB players because of their muscle memory. You've spent your entire career training to hit fastballs so that timing is hard coded into you, when you get a pitch slower than that you're fighting your own instincts in order to hit it. Think about if you drove the same car for 5 years and then randomly the pedals switch positions or gear shift is just a little farther away. You'd be an absolute mess even after knowing they changed because you're so used to driving it a specific way.

      @@thisishandlenumber2048 An underrated factor is that the batter has to supply a lot more of their own power with a slow pitch. You can see that even when they got the bat on them, the balls weren't going all that fast.

    • @mrmacross
      @mrmacross 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I figure some of it is that if you throw a slow, high-arcing breaking ball, then by the time it reaches the catcher's mitt the downward motion is faster than compared to a garden variety breaking ball in MLB.
      But if you ever watch HR derby, you know that a lot of times it's just a matter of batters getting themselves out, so to speak. They can stand in the box and not worry about the count and just wait for a perfect pitch to hit out of the park, and a lot of times they hit the ball poorly. They're swinging at balls up in the zone, going about 60-70 MPH with little to no late movement, and yet even pros occasionally get poor contact in those scenarios. In this sequence, the first and third outs were relatively hard-hit liners, and the second out was a swing on a two-strike count against one of those slow, high-arcing breaking balls.

      @@cuthbertallgood7781 When I started to play softball I tried hitting the ball like I would in baseball but I would only get singles. Then I realized that I needed to put a lot more energy into the ball than traditional hitting so I started to step into the swing more and also changing my hitting angle. I went from only hitting singles to hitting doubles and triples. The MLB hitters definitely rely on Newtons laws more than they think.

      As a pitcher who throws like this on purpose, it's because it's so different from what they're used to that it actually messes with their timing and swing. If you throw 30+ mph slower than what they're used to, they have to adjust quite a bit to even lay the bat on it, and because the angle is so extreme, it'll either go straight into the dirt or high into the air if they DO make contact with it. It only works once through, though. They figure it out after one bat-through.

    They should use non-pitchers more often. It’s easy to blast a ball coming in over the plate at 85mph because the ball is doing half the work. When you’re lobbing it at half that speed It’s basically just the batter’s power that is making the ball go anywhere. The baseball bean counters should consider that shit

    I played baseball through high school and was always in the top of the lineup since I was great at getting on base and even the sending an occasional homer. Then, in my 20's I joined a softball league and my hitting was not ideal. The ball going so slow and dropping into the strike zone I'd often swing too early, foul it or fly ball. It was frustrating and I just couldn't make the adjustment. Pretty embarrassing tbh lol.
