      I'm here because of Don Draper. Admittedly, many years ago I learned how to make one in bartending school, but my whole time behind the bar I never had the chance to make a real one. So I forgot the recipe, it just so happened that I was at a watering hole a couple days ago and I got a hankering for one, but the bartender said that she had only made one in her entire life tending. So the next time I stopped in the place I'm going to have this memorized so that I can refresh her memory.

    This was amazing. Apart from the use of simple syrup instead of sugar cubes, this is textbook. To prevent sugar granules, put your sugar in the glass, put 2-3 dashes of bitters, and mix til you have a syrup. Regardless, the taste is almost identical. You saved youtube

    Use a teaspoon of brown sugar instead of simple sugar. My favorite rye to use is Crown Royal Northern Harvest, but I'm on a budget so use Old Overholdt most weeks. If you don't have Luxardo cherries don't bother with the nasty Maraschino ones at the store.

    Rye whiskey was cheaper and more prevalent in the 1800s. Honestly I don't think many had a choice in the 1800s between rye and bourbon. He is correct in that the muddling was probably introduced to the old fashioned during the Prohibition, not because people liked sweeter drinks, but bartenders wanted to disguise the taste of the substandard alcohol or even the fact that it might not even be alcohol that was being served.

    I love Old Fashioneds and this video is my gold standard for making them. Thank you for making this video and teaching me how to make a great Old Fashioned....and I agree...the Orange Bitters are KEY!
    That said, one thing about this video had made me scratch my head for years....I have never figured out why, when you are putting ice into the mixing glas, you grab the ice with your hand...put it in the metal cup, then tip the ice into the mixing glass...using your hand to control the ice as it falls into the mixing glass. What is the point of putting it in the metal cup then pouring it into the mixing glass???
    Why not just put the ice straight into the mixing glass??? (which is what I do)
    But I love this video (and all your other drink mix videos) anyway :)

    • @petercortez1142
      @petercortez1142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dilution. When you shake it with the ice, your mixing it together and making it cold. Then you pour it into a glass with a big piece of ice to keep it cool whilst you are drinking it.

      Skuller74 the original recipe for the Whiskey Cocktail in 1862 calls for gum syrup. Most recipes used gum syrup or simple syrup. They didn't have sugar cubes.

    • @TomBA-iu5lq
      @TomBA-iu5lq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Manhattan 71 is correct. The first published recipe (1862) uses sugar syrup and not a sugar cube. There is no need to add that extra step of muddling a sugar cube with water into the glass (essentially making sugar syrup in the glass) when you can use pre-dissolved sugar. Quick, easy, consistent AND the original way. Great video.

    You need to up your ice game to clear ice. Holds the temps even longer and doesn’t melt nearly as fast as that cloudy ice you got. Also a lemon doesn’t belong. Orange peel only. Classic sugar cube is that way to go and putting a nice luxardo cherry on top adds a nice flavor touch

    Is there even any right way to make an old fashioned? I feel like any tutorial or any video showing you how to make one will get a good amount of people hating on it saying "no that's not an old fashioned... THIS is how you make it" whether it's muddle the fruit, don't muddle the fruit, use a cube, use a brown cube, use bourbon, no use rye, use a lemon peel, don't use a lemon feel. I mean I think it's safe to say everyone has there own version of this cocktail.

    • @zman7117
      @zman7117 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea it has clearly evolved over time. The original recipe is probably considered to be the "right way." Dissolve (or muddle to save time) a sugar cube (Demerara sugar cube, but minor detail) in a little bit of water. That should be the only muddling you do. Add Angostura Bitters (2 dashes). I think Rye whiskey was the original, but either rye or bourbon are fine. Orange, lemon, and ice are all optional. Very simple drink - easy to adjust and make to your liking.

    • @Beta4Life
      @Beta4Life 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This guy mixed traditional and modern, he didn't muddle the fruit but also didn't muddle the sugar. A traditional old fashioned you definitely soak a demerara sugar cube in angostura bitters, add a teaspoon of water and muddle until the sugar is completely dissolved, then twist a bit of lemon peel and orange peel in and add 2 oz of rye whiskey.
      There is no proper version of an old fashioned that uses simple syrup, any other twist on the old fashioned is fine, but simple syrup is a sin, fresh muddled sugar is the only way to go.

    • @TheMrVengeance
      @TheMrVengeance 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TheMrVengeance Exactly. Jerry Thomas was the first to publish the recipe for the Whiskey Cocktail which called for gum syrup...obviously they didn't use perfectly cut sugar cubes in 1862 Beta4Life.

    Tip: Stop stirring the drink once the glass get cold to prevent over-diluting.

      When using citrus bitters it's great just for the look of the cocktail, but if you follow the traditional methods it's great to use the citrus oils for that extra layer of flavour and aroma!

      At the times where there was no bourbon whiskey... that would be rye but hardly anyone was intentionally maturing at the time so if it at best would spent few weeks or months in wood, closes thing is rye vodka, not extensively matured woody rye whisky made in US.

    flame the orange peel releases the oils

    • @Uckertay
      @Uckertay 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ZombieLincoln666 it gives the oils a slight smoky accent to the oils. The best way to do this is to use matches and not a lighter.

    I'm against the overuse of muddled fruit, but muddling a bit of orange peel is perfectly valid, especially when you don't have orange bitters on hand. Funny how this guy cites history to justify his method, and then whips out a frozen glass. Because all bars had frozen glasses in the pre-Prohibition era...

      Jesse Sun The orange bitters thing was the worst considering that was not invented until 2006 I think. Not muddling the orange peel is saying "hey I'm too lazy to peel and muddle". Also considering the Old Fashioned has water already in it (couple of dashes at least) before you even drink it makes the frozen glass even more pointless.
