    I started out with the sugar cube but then switched to making simple syrup. I feel like it mixes better into the cocktail. Later on I discover making flavored simple syrup with orange zest. It saved me from buying the orange bitters. I encourage everyone to try it once.

      Sounds good, but it begs the question of what makes a drink.
      Id say the muddling sugar is main thing that distinguishes an old fashioned, so what you described isnt one, but instead a lowball of your own creation which should get its own name.
      Definitely going to give it a try though sounds like the perfect end of the day tasty low effort no mess drink.

      @@cernanwinterfox85 okay dude spoken like a prima donna who thinks they know better. Cocktails are about how you want it. The fact you won’t even try and see if my way mixes better proves my point… I have other theories about why This is so personal to you but I’ll keep them to myself 👍🖕

      I already used simple syrup, but man, great idea about the orange zest. I'll have to try that.

    • @arielborja1486
      @arielborja1486 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I do feel like muddling the sugar is better than using simple syrup because not all of the sugar dissolves which makes the cocktail build its sweetness upon drinking. Making it a better experience ti enjoy the cocktail different from adding simple syrup which will make the cocktail sweeter almost instantly ( givin a feeling of just drinking whiskey with sugar 🤮) ofc adding the oils from the orange ti hive the cocktail an aroma and add cítrics is a great idea tho.

    • @nicholasmurgolo6905
      @nicholasmurgolo6905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arielborja1486 agreed. It’s not a classic old fashioned otherwise. Doesn’t mean it’s not a good drink; I’m sure it is. But if I’m not tasting the sugar in the drink then it’s not an old fashioned

    I like to use maple syrup as my sweetener. It brings more flavours into play and complements the orange better than a sugar cube.

    I'm 37 and I didn't really start having drinks until earlier this year. I've been kind of looking for a go-to cocktail when I'm out socially and want to have one. I had this one yesterday with the cherry and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm still not a big drinker but it's nice to have something to go to now

    My all-time fave! I toss in a Luxardo cherry with a splash of the juice. I also add a splash of Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur. There are so many variations out there. I hate the ones with soda. I think the large ice is important. Crushed ice waters it down.

      I love Luxardo liquer in an old fashioned, but im also partial to a bit of fizz so i like using soda. The trick is not to drown it if your using it directly in the drink, but ideally id say its best served on the side with drink.

    The flamed orange is a must. I've made a few old fashions lately and Monday was the first time I tried the orange trick but I flamed it with my brulee torch and did the rim of the glass and it added so much richness and depth to the cocktail. I've added cherries but the normal maraschinos and I use vanilla simple syrup instead of the sugar cube but it's so good I need to get the bitters and want to try either the Luxardo cherries or the Filthy brand liquor soaked cherries. Payday can't come soon enough.

    I learned how to mix a old fashioned on this channel. I perfected it to my taste. And what a pleasure to whip up my own delicious cocktail. All the advice was wonderful as I was a complete novice. It’s such a treat I keep the ingredients at hand and can whip one up in a heartbeat. It’s fun making one at home to enjoy with music or food. To enjoy slowly. I never thought I would develop a taste I can understand now the sublime tastes of different whiskies and bourbon. I can mix the exact amount I want and know my limit. Thank for the advice. Very cool.

I'd make mine with only *half* a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon of water, 2 dashes of angostura bitters, ice and then 2 1/4 oz of wild turkey (or old grand dad or old crow) and stir. No orange peels or any other type of fruit.

    Thanks for that, I forgot all about this cocktail in lieu of drinking Manhattans. I'm like you, when I mix a drink, I use lots of 'change'....

    I use a mandarine orange slice and maraschino cherry muddled together with 4 splashes of bitters and a teaspoon of sugar. Oh, and brandy is my choice of liquor.

    Flaming the orange is something I didn't think would make much of a difference. I was completely wrong ! In my opinion this just made my old fashioned taste better than I've ever had. I highly recommend that everyone try this at least once ! Try making it without rubbing it on the rim, and then try it on the rim. Huge difference and I will absolutely be doing it this way from now on !

    Hi !
    I have just tried this today and it is one of the most beautiful ❤️ drinks I have ever drank 🍷! Can I make it with Southern Comfort?

    "Add the bourbon" proceeds to pour in rye.

    I always thought a luxardo cherry was a must.. I muddle the orange peel into the bitters/sugar. Also sometimes ill sub out the sugar cube for some bourbon infused maple syrup and use a bourbon instead of rye YUM. I also tend to fill my rocks glass with regular ice and simply fill it to the brim with whiskey 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I reattempted this today but when the sugar inevitably did not dissolve, I removed the ice cubes and microwaved the drink until hot. The sugar is now dissolved and the drink is in the freezer. I don't know whether I've accidentally removed any of the alcohol in the process, but hopefully I'll end up with a feasible old-fashioned soon.

      Try making simple syrup. I use it for just that reason.

    I was introduced to the Old Fashioned just a year ago and it quickly became my favorite drink. What I love about it is it lets you enjoy the flavor of the whiskey, but softened, sweetened and enhanced with compatible and complementary flavors. Just my opinion, but whiskey and Coke are not compatible; while trying to tone down the bite of straight-up whiskey, you just ruin the flavor of the whiskey and ruin the flavor of the Coke. An Old Fashioned tones it down and makes it better.
