      I know this video is old now, but just for the record, David Wondrich has proven that the Old Fashioned was not created or named at the Pendennis Club. The Old Fashioned is attested to in print several years before the Pendennis Club opened. Although the Club still likes that story.

    i make demerera simple syrup, sometimes with just a hint of vanilla extract, otherwise pretty much the same. touch heavy on the ango, and absolutely rittenhouse. that all said, recently got a tip from a bar around here that makes a killer oldie, the bartender was clearly a biiiit sauced end of night... now using maple syrup + demerara blend. he does only maple but i like the mix. really a suuuuper nice touch. especially if you miss a bit of the bourbon sweet profile but still want the spice and bite of rye.

      @@TheEducatedBarfly There's an old joke about a bartender unable to satisfy a regular who constantly complained that his old fashioned was too sweet. Night after night the barkeep reduced the sugar, the garnish... then the bitters and eventually even the water. After weeks of frustration the regular sat at his bar and ordered an old fashioned with the quip, "And not too sweet this time."
      The tender, at his wits end, slammed a tumbler on the counter, threw in an ice cube and dumped three fingers of his well rye over the top.
      The regular took a stiff pull from the glass and declared aloud:
      "Now THAT'S an old fashioned."

    I pretty much only drink Old Fashioned and this point. After experimenting this is how I almost always drink them.
    2 oz Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon (not Rye just the regular)
    A teaspoon of Sugar or Cube (I have even used a single packet of Splenda and can't tell the difference)
    A few dashes of Angostura Orange Bitters
    Half to Full teaspoon of the syrup from the Luxardo Cherries
    Mix well in a mixing glass with ice.
    Pour over clear ice ball/cube
    Add a Luxardo Cherry (Really if you are using cherry this is the only one you should be using period)
    Add an Orange peel. (If I am lazy I'll just put in half an orange slice)
    Enjoy!

  • @RLSumnerWeb

    Just to correct the misinformation here. The OF was already in Jerry Thomas’ how to mix drinks, almost 25 years before the Pendennis club story. The OF first appeared in the May 6, 1806, issue of The Balance and Columbian Repository in Hudson, New York. By the time the 1880’s rolled around there were a slew of other cocktails using all sorts of liquors and vermouths and fresh ingredients, which is WHY the Cocktail came to be known as the old fashioned cocktail.
    Easy stuff to look up online. Hard to get this one wrong. And it’s the foundation for all mixed drinks so it’s definitely not the one to get wrong.

    • @TheEducatedBarfly
      @TheEducatedBarfly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I’ve gone over all this adinfinitum on the channel already but I appreciate the effort. Although it is wrong, I think the Pendennis club history is worth a telling.
      I corrected this history on another video :) oh and the old fashioned was not the foundation for all mixed drinks, people were making punch well before the creation of this drink. The Old Fashioned was an extension of the bittered sling, in actuality it is a bittered sling with the addition of ice and made with Whiskey (whereas slings were made with any spirit, often Gin). Thanks for the effort! :)

    • @oldrustycars
      @oldrustycars 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bartenders there are fanatics about their Old Fashioneds. Always made with brandy, usually with orange slice, maraschino cherry and Angustora bitters muddled. Sprite for sweet or Squirt for tart. One bartender brought the mix for his Old Fashioneds from home in gallon jugs so no one could find out what was in them. Yours is certainly a classic Old Fashioned, I've enjoyed more than my share like this. Digging your videos.

    • @TheNem3sys
      @TheNem3sys 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oldrustycars I think you're referring to the author of the video, I'm just your average closeted alcoholic, anyway I get what you're saying but I don't believe that that kind of attitude is positive for a comunity, not referring to your behaviour specifically, I'm talking about fanatic bartenders who have eccessivly strict preconceptions on what a drink is supposed to be. If it boils down to personal preference it should be treated as a suggestion more than a thightening of the circle of accepted recipies: if a client asks you for an old fashoned 95% of the time they are referring to a whiskey/sugar/bitters/water cocktail and you shouldn't assume they'll like it better the Wisconsin way, maybe just suggest them they try it with brandy? explain that It's your local tradition and it would make for a better thematic experience, I would feel more welcome that way and way more incline to try it rather than being told that the way i like things is wrong.

    • @oldrustycars
      @oldrustycars 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheNem3sys I find in my travels different places take pride in how they do things. My friend in Boston says a Chicago style hot dog looks like someone spilled salad on a perfectly fine hot dog. We all insist our style of pizza is correct. Old Fashioneds in Wisconsin are just one of these things. One smart ass bartender near Chicago gave me grief for asking for a vodka martini, insisting it must be made with gin to be a martini. In any case, no offense intended and I hope none was taken. My first replay was sarcasm, but I will say if you just ask for an Old Fashioned in Wisconsin and you have a 30 year veteran New York bartender serving one like the video shows you will get questioned. Cheers.

    Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a fan of the practice of soaking a sugar cube with bitters and muddling it into a paste. Way back in the 19th century bartenders started opting for sugar syrup when sweetening drinks, so the whole sugar cube approach is a bit of hipster affectation in my opinion. *That said*, there's really no wrong way to make an Old Fashioned, and you raise some interesting points in favour of using a sugar cube (i.e. the grainy texture, etc.). I still prefer mine with 2:1 demerara syrup (or maple syrup if I'm feeling fancy), but yours looks tasty too :)

    I need help guys... why do some places place a napkin on the glass, but the sugar cube on it, than the bitters, wait for a sugar to absorb what it can, than the napkin is removed?

      Do you mean placing the napkin first then the glass on top? That's just standard presentation/serving practice. Other reasons could be it will make cleanup easier if there's spillage when making a drink!

    Whenever I see this drink I kept thinking of Emma Stones seeing Ryan Goslings' abs and went like "FUCK! Serious!? It's like you're photoshopped!"
