    the character designs are honestly pretty good, it's a shame that they're eternally stuck in a bad game
    the same goes to balan wonderland as well

    Seriously, imagine being stuck on this level and asking your friend for advice.
    "Oh yeah, just light up the torch so it'll wake up a frog who will then go over to where Barbaros is so he can get turned into a bomb, which will make Barbaros run away allowing you to trip him, but make sure you put another bell next to where he falls over so he'll pick it up and give you a window to get Wiki back."
    How on earth are you supposed to intuit the solutions to these puzzles? Even Portal at its worst isn't this obtuse.

      I'd argue that's very much an issue with point & click games in general, often the game expects you to try using a bunch of items until it works, and it's especially bad in zack & wiki because you can only hold one item at once

    20:37 I'm starting to think that Capcom made the sword physics *INTENTIONALLY BAD* so that the players wouldn't rely on the sword to fight the skeletons roaming around and favor traps and avoidance.
    Evidence: The only skeleton you HAVE to fight is the one that DOESN'T kill you when you lose.
    Seriously, *FUCK THIS GAME'S SWORD PHYSICS!!!*

    3:02 That's just most point and click games though, complete nonsense logic that you'll be stuck for ages trying to figure out, before you look it up and discover you were actually supposed to mix the apple juice with the rubbing alcohol so you could give it to the homeless man and make him pass out so you could steal his change and use the pay phone (yes, that is an actual example)

      The fact that the Scotland Yard doesn't immediately fire and charge Halligan for *poisoning a random hobo* is just icing on the cake. At times, it honestly feels like that game is trying to be a satire of point and click adventure games.

    I played this game like 2 years ago for the first time in ten or so years, and yeah, this game kinda sucks now. Mostly because of the motion controls being a bitch, though. I think it's a very charming puzzle game on the outside, but a painful experience to actually play. At first I though of getting 100% on it, then immediately gave up after realizing one of the things you needed to do was to win the swordfighting with the crappy golden sword, and the fighting itself is beyond awful. Not worth it at all to play through this ever again, at least the puzzles themselves aren't the worst thing about it for me.

      That's a shame. I never got to play this game myself, but I always thought it had a very charming art style and premise. Sucks it's one of those games that had most of its potential wasted by being one of the victims of the early Wii's uncanny controls on top of its sheer difficulty.

    A boss shortcut suggestion:
    Turbo Man
    If you perfectly time it, you can fire a shot from shade man’s weapon as you enter the room. The shot won’t leave, and as turbo man finishes his animation, the shot hits him before his health bar even fills up, therefore killing him instantly

  • @mattb6522
    @mattb6522 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Man, you just unlocked a memory I had tried to bury for many years! Zack & Wiki was a game I wanted to enjoy but having to repeat stages due to a counterintuitive puzzle solution became so tiring and this game turned into a chore. This level was the epitome of everything wrong with the design for this game.
    Yes, it had that Capcom charm but between a lot of stupid logic, severe lack of checkpoints and cumbersome motion controls, this game wore on my last nerve. I had to use a guide for this level and honestly just wanted the game to be over at this point. This game had potential but it just had way too many design flaws to be any fun!

  • @jackmoon824
    @jackmoon824 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

    There's 2 factors that I never see when talk about game design, and that makes something frustrating. The TIME that takes you to reach a part, and how much TRIES you have to fail before repeat all again. Also, how much EFFORT you have to put in your way.
    For example, that damn junk yard level on Megaman x6, is so slow cause you have to wait the crusher, and at some point, there's a part where you have to go trhough some spikes that kills you with 1 hit. If you fail, you have to go trhough ALL THE WAY AGAIN, WAITING THE DAMN CRUSHER

      This is why I'm thankful From Software introduced stakes of Marika in Elden Ring. If you lose to a boss, you can just restart right outside the boss door with full HP and healing flasks for another shot.

    Yikes. Point and Click Adventure games are a very acquired taste, and that's before you throw in instant death mechanics, poor checkpointing and early Wii-era motion controls. The only other time I've heard of Zack and Wiki[pedia] is when Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame reviewed it. He wasn't any kinder to it than you.
    King Arthur's World was one of my favorite SNES games growing up, but nowadays the checkpointing is a serious obstacle to enjoyment. If Arthur dies, you must begin the level over again. Which is fine early game, but later stages can take up to 30 minutes, and will require you to place Arthur in harm's way more and more often. In the professional Longplay of this game, Cloud World 6 takes an hour to beat. I also remember a Cloud World level where the final obstacle is a sequence of locked doors combined with a disappearing floor over a pit where you must hurry and grab each key, unlocking each door to reach the end... and only Arthur can use keys. And there's instant death lasers.
    All this would be so much more tolerable if they just let you checkpoint at each tent flag instead of the start of the level.

    It’s funny, because I immediately thought of Wii Sports Resort’s Swordplay and Penny’s boss microgame Produce Stand Off in Wario Ware: Smooth Moves when seeing the sword combat in this game, but just one look at how the sword was moving demonstrated that that controls were not as refined as those games. There clearly was a way to do it right, the game just failed at it.

    Sierra point-and-clicks like King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry were also fond of killing you in ridiculous and unfair ways, but those games had the luxury of being able to save and reload anytime you want. I feel like Zak & Wiki could have benefited from that, or at least having set checkpoints. Or taking the LucasArts route and not killing you at all

    • @qu1253
      @qu1253 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I recently watched a longplay of King's Quest 4 and there was one part that stood out to me: the swamp. My first thought was "Oh, you have a crown that lets you transform into a frog. So just wear the crown and swim across the swamp!". Nope. You get eaten if you do that. What you're actually supposed to do is hop across the lily pads... in human form.
      Okay, fine, there's things in the water that will easily eat a small frog, but the lily pads don't immediately sink under the weight of a person?
      (Although, I have to admit, I can't get enough of the music that plays when a zombie appears. It's so goofy.)

    • @BBHood217
      @BBHood217 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Even saving and reloading anytime isn't safe because they also have dead man walking situations where you do a wrong thing and its consequence only manifests many screens later, and you've probably already saved over the file that was before where you did the wrong thing.

    @jackmoon824 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    You know... I honestly like the ideas of the final part, like you having to prepare everything that could happen so you can win against the big bad guy. Is a really interesting concept. The problem is... this game ISN'T ABOUT THAT, if the game were about like, the character being abe to go back in the time whenever he wants, and the whole game were about do stuff like that (like in that episode of gravity falls of the fair) would be good. But the game is about to see problems and think for solutions. But this is just trial an error. Fortunately it has a check point after the damn long hard part, but still.

    @obviouslyme8344 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Oh boy, this is a game from my childhood.
    It has such a charming presentation and it's full of personality.
    However I agree with what you said in the video. It has some bizarre and often perplexing puzzles and the motion controls get in the way of the gameplay most of the times.
    Dying and having to replay the whole level is really not fun. It's even worse if you are trying to go for the best score.
    Just mess up in one puzzle and you have to restart because you lost points!
    What really stressed out young me was that the game keeps track of how many times you die, easily accessible through the main hub!
    I've never been a fan of games that keep track of your death counter and sometimes it ruined the whole experience for me (looking at you, Celeste).
    I am sure that if there was no death counter, kid me would have had a much easier time.
    I tried to complete the levels in my own but I ultimately gave up and started looking up guides around the Mad Science level you showed in the video.
    These puzzles get so confusing and convoluted...
    Funnily enough, I never finished the game, I stopped at the level you talked for most of the video.
    It's such a long and tedious level with so many opportunities to mess up and having to replay everything all over.
    I looked up videos for this and the last level and yeap, the last level looks just as tedious as this one. I don't regret not playing the last one!
    Some time ago I looked up a 100% speedrun about this game and, surprise surprise, this is one of the hardest levels to do perfectly for obvious reasons.
    What's even funnier (or rather, painful) is the grind for the side content in order to get 100%.
    In the main hub, you can pay an NPC to go on expeditions in order to find collectibles, like music, artwork, trivia, etc.
    The map you found unlocks a location for more of these goodies.
    A good chunk of the speedrun time was spent just sending this NPC away to get all of the collectibles.
    We are talking of hours spent doing this, who thought this would have been fun for anyone???
    Overall, Zack and Wiki is a game I hold dearly in my memories.
    However It has some terrible, horrendous flaws with a lot of missed potential.
    Despite this, kid me found this game so charming to come back for it again, having a lot of fun too.
    But it's not a game I would be happy to replay nowadays, its problems are just too heavy.
    (P.S. I remain a big fan of Captain Rose and her goons, I cannot not love them)

      I only just noticed the death counter tally during the making of this video. Yeah, I really don't like it when games keep track of that, it makes me become very conscious of my performance, to the point of spoiling my fun.
      I also wish online games didn't keep track of your win/loss ratio for the same reason; I remember being afraid to even try other characters in Smash 4 other than Yoshi for a long while until I had a win ratio of something like 88% from thousands of matches, because the thought of having a higher ratio of losses than wins on the some little menu only I can see is something that scares me a lot more than it should.

    I just can't bring myself to hate this game ever. I thought this was nostalgia at first, but then I replayed it a year ago and I still had fun, despite how much I should've hated it, and even then I don't remember 12yo me being that frustrated with the game (though it's likely I just didn't mind looking stuff up back then). Hell, I even did it 100% both times! That said, fuck the swordfighting part.I didn't had much trouble with the motion control except with the swordfights (and maybe the anchor throws during the final boss)

    I actually liked this game and found the levels short enough to repeat over and over by learning from my mistakes. Despite failing at least once per level, I could easily solve a few in the short span of an hour. Then came this infernal level. I tried, failed, failed, failed some more, but made progress within the level, as usual. Then the sword fighting came along. I had no idea it was unnecessary (except for the one part you mercifully can't die in), nor did any guide mention killing the guards with pots. So I fought. And I lost. Lost again, and again... took me three hours to ragequit.

    I don't know why this game resonate with me that much. The game was really stupid at time, but working on the solution, sometime multiple by level, was kind of cool.

  • @shirrenthewanderer414

    Most point and click games have the common cour.... it's a CORE FEATURE that they have. You save, you try a puzzle, fail/die, and reload and do it again. NOW... there are SOME *cough* King's Quest V *cough* where that can lock you into an unwinnable state, but point and clicks take at most 30-45 minutes once you solved all the puzzles. But you can *get this* have as many as 50 different save states to mess around with so you can go back and try other things and try to avoid what made your game unwinnable in the first place.
    Zack and Wiki doesn't even have that. It has the hint dolls and revives that other P and C's don't need those. Imagine have to go through a Kings Quest section (say The whole icy winter queen section and the yeti in KQ5 with one save).

    Closest thing I've encountered to this situation were Dragon Marked For Death's tower missions.
    The game was announced as a spiritual successor to Megaman Zero, of course I was eager to play it! Unfortunately, I don't think the game earns its hidden gem reputation even ignoring me playing it back when it was a live service.
    A major problem I have with the game is that like the first Zero game it reuses stages. Naturally, that makes the already bad tower area significantly worse.
    Every single mission needs you to fetch batteries in chests that look the same as the rest for every floor you have to ascend. They also come with unskippable elevator cutscenes and your target will always be located on at least the third floor. Deva Rats are also extremely common enemies that are likely to cause status effects if they hit you. And if it happens to be paralysis, you can't remove it even if you're a magic user because it locks all your moves aside from walking and jumping. And one mission needs you to deal with a rat infestation, too! Last but not least, one of the event flags needed to finish the plot is in one of these missions without anyone telling you.

    This game looks like a kind of game that gets ruined solely on the ground of poor programming (in this case programming of response margin from wii-mote. I mean, you have played other games, and really you can compare yourself, how other games react to motions and how this game does. I don't remember you complaining much about this with other games (well, much at least), so it really have to come down to poor programming).
    And on a subject of puzzles, point-and-click games do often have a roundabout way of solution finding. Usualy it's not "what I do to solve this", but rather, "what items and where I can apply to make something happen, that hopefully resolve situation." So you usually inclined to, well, point and click all over the place, but it's hard to do, if you are fighting controls all the time.

That was probably the intent, but it's still a shit hint. While you might figure out that you can still do something while falling early on, as you said, there's absolutely no indication of what you actually can do in the short time that you have, which will likely lead to dying the exact same way, over and over again.

    What can you interact with? There are points where that isn't clear. It's hard to puzzle solve when you don't know what tools you have to work with.
    The progression of events is too obtuse. It's not clear what elements are going to accomplish what purpose. Is there any indication at all that the frog is meaningful? Not that I can tell. It seems the designers were going with a "it's there so it must be important" justification, but without an intuitive logical sequence that gives the player very little to work with. A good puzzle level has the player know exactly what will accomplish the task they need, and the meat of the mental effort is trying to figure out how to get that task accomplished. If there are too many gaps in the event sequence, the player has to resort to random flailing and hoping that they stumble upon the solution.
    This is the big one, though: overload. The human brain only has so much working memory to work with. A stage like this has far too many moving pieces for a person to reasonably keep track of, and made all the worse by the fact that you can only manipulate one item at a time, so you not only need to track each type of item but also its spatial location. The fact that it's a large map where you only see a small window at any given time exacerbates this.
    It would be a frustrating trial without the mechanical issues - now throw those in and you have a recipe for disaster.

    Weren't these kind of swordfight mechanics already figured out after they were used in Wii Sports Resort? For being early era Wii games, the motion controls in the Wii Sports games feel very intuitive

    The puzzles are a mixed bag, some of them are good, others a bit of a strech and others... I don't know how you are suposed to figure them out, but restarting the whole level is awful in a puzzle focused game, I never seen a puzzle game punish the player for It.

    This game probably could be better if they axed the motion controls and made things less cryptic to players. Should be re-released for the Switch with these quality of life changes.

    The sword combat in Skyward Sword is already a common complaint, hearing a game exists with even worse sword combat makes me instantly hate it.

    Oh, this game... I've seen its character art and some screenshots, but I don't believe I've actually seen gameplay until tonight. I agree with some of the comments here; These character designs look good, but developers' obsession with Wii motion controls wasted them on a poorly-designed game.

    25:31 Nah, it really *DOES* suck balls and is awful.
    Which is why I am starting to suspect that Capcom made it crappy on purpose to discourage players from playing the game as if they were Dante or Vergil.

    I don't know why but if you hold the Wiimote in the opposite way the sword works better or at least that's what happened to me, i engaged a Regular Skeleton (So with the risk of dying) and i defeated him without getting damaged
    P.s. Like i said this worked for me but i'm not saying that this works 100%

    Oh man, if you thought that this is one of the worst levels ever, you didn't meet Sierra's games.
    At least this game shows where did you make a mistake, Sierra's point and clicks used to be much worse. If you missed an item or event ONCE, you will get a bad ending and the game will treat it like if it was YOUR FAULT.
    The worst of all is that it was bad design on purpose, if you wanted to beat a game in the past you needed to pay a guide book or call Sierra itself for clues at the cost of your parents' wallet.
    Yeah, Sierra's early catalog is far worse than Zack & Wiki and it's not even a contest, it's a hidrogen bomb vs coughing baby situation.

    I got this game on wiiu in preparation for the e-shop closure (along with like, ALL the Metroid games (except the smelly one)). I found it somewhat entertaining, but I gave up around the final level because I was damn determined to have my first run have a perfect score via save scumming. While my crippling perfectionism did not spark joy, neither did the sword fight mini game. Also, with speaker rot hitting my antique wiimotes, that level where you used a phone to hear the sounds of the stuff in the room to click on turned into matching the music symbols they emitted, which is a problem because the quarter note, eighth note, and half note look like pallet swaps of each other. Thank you, classical music notation!
