Be wary of the pundit that dismisses stats when assessing football. Craig Burley would be one of those scouts that judge a player on whether his girlfriend is ugly as he is a proper football guy who just knows. You don't use stats to prove a point as they are useless on their own, you use stats to enhance what you saw happening in the match. If you saw one team dominating the other and you check the stats after the match it should confirm this and you can use the stat as further proof of what you saw. Edit to add: On the running stat, seeing a player run 13 km a match means nothing, I agree. Seeing a player look tired and struggling to keep up and you check that he has run further than all others for the past 10 matches shows that is why he is tired, enhancing what you saw. Seeing a player struggling after 60 minutes you are just guessing if they are tired or unfit without stats. But then again, that is what punditry is most of the time, educated guesses.
It should be mentioned that in the match where di Canio sat down, he got back up and led them to a comeback victory with him scoring the winning penalty.
